If I was in charge of such a rich company I would keep a small team of 5-10 people around to keep supporting Aperture until Photos improves enough to capture even more of the advanced users' needs.

But I don't think that's what they are trying to do.... Photos is targeted as a product to be more powerful than iPhoto but less than Aperture. If you need the "power" of Aperture, then Apple expects you to go to Lightroom. Plain and simple.

Apple is shooting for Mid-range users anymore. Final Cut X is another example...

 UGGHH.. well at least I'll still be able to re-download my copy. I'd still recommend any pro not happy with lightroom to buy it even thou its EDL'd.

Aperture is F'ng awesome pro tool. WTF:apple:

Totally agree. At the moment there is nothing out there that could replace Aperture for me. It's sad but I see me using it still for quite a while.

Do you guys notice just how much Apple is making OS X resemble iOS (especially with Yosemite)? I think Apple is slowly trying to make OS X & iOS one-in-the-same.

its a shame that apple are chasing the money and scrapping off pro applications

Obviously sales have declined enough that to continue to keep it going was a waste of time, effort and money. Lightroom obviously has won the battle. A lot of professionals I know moved to Lightroom a few years back.

At the end of the day, Apple is a business and they have to justify everything in that sense. It makes more sense putting the talent and money at work into something viable, than waste it where there's not enough demand.

Photos is better than iPhoto. If anyone is being honest, it's not a replacement for Aperture. It's almost a halfway between the 2.

Seriously ??
Why would apple do this ?

Aperture is a good product and they make money off of it.... So why get if of it?

Obviously not making enough money to keep it viable.

I don't think Apple's aim is to keep pro's. That's why they are helping people transfer from Aperture to Lightroom, if that's what they wish to do. It's a business decision to put your resources into the 99% not the 1%.

Not saying I am happy about it, but I think you can see where the company is going with this (iWorks, FCP, Aperture, etc). Software has always been a way for them to sell hardware (where the real margin is) and not the company's true focus.

Thing is Apples programs have never been "industry leading" and the only thing that's been amazing about them is their hardware. If they were to "betray" us (the professional market) they'd take down the Mac Pro, not have made a 5k iMac, and wouldn't have updated Final Cut all that time ago but instead just combining it with iMovie in a similar move to this. The fact is the only program of Apples that works better than the "industry leading" one is Final Cut, and that's just due to the hardware acceleration. Premier+After Effects is better for actual productivity, versatility, and useability.

Apple is merely cutting losses, like they did with the 17" MBP. I'd cream my pants over a retina 17" MBP like I did with the 5k iMac announcement, but they wouldn't bring in enough profit to warrant it. I don't even know if they're pulling in enough profit from the 5k iMac.

The point I'm making is: They aren't betraying you. Stop overreacting. Aperture is a very, very small program that barely anyone uses in the industry. There's a reason Adobe gets tons of cash.

Photos looks to be a good replacement for the mess known as iPhoto.

personally I'm sticking with LightRoom

Adobe Lightroom (as of version 5.7) has an Aperture catalog conversion tool built in.

If you're still on Aperture, you really should consider switching. Lightroom's been the better program since LR3. Even with LR2 it was debatable.

It appears to me that Photos is becoming a platform, not just an app. So the professional niche and other niches will be served by 3rd party apps and they will all integrate seamlessly with your one iCloud photo library. Sounds great to me.

Really sad, I loved using Aperture. Bought Capture One now which I like. Probably subscribe to the LR/Photoshop apps as well. Apart from Photoshop I am not an Adobe fan. It's not like Apple didn't have the money to invest and compete. At least with Photos things will be a lot simpler.

Wonder which pro app Apple will drop next?

Look is one thing. Feel is another. Please note how well Windows 8 works with a mouse. Try restarting. Or quitting a Metro app. Then note the hacks to make 8/.1 feel like Windows 7.

I would have to think Apple have learned from MS.

Of course they did. All you had to do was see how Apple treated all of their other professional customers, and the writing was on the wall. Combined with a lack of updates, it's no wonder they jumped ship.

Had Apple actually committed to supporting their line of "pro apps", the professionals would have stayed.

Exactly. It's going to be interesting to see some of the third party apps that are going to take advantage of this.

Did Apple ever say Photos was meant to be an Aperture replacement?

Right here:
When Photos for OS X is available this spring, Aperture will no longer be available for purchase from the Mac App Store.

and originally here:
Apple will cease the development of its ‘pro’ photo editing app Aperture. Users of that program will be transitioned to Photos, a new app that was introduced during the WWDC keynote and that will be released next year.

The people I know jumped before the Final Cut Pro palava. They went to Lightroom not too long after version 2 came out.

Photos for OS X is such a huge improvement over iPhoto and Aperture this makes sense. It's just incredible that Apple is going to be giving away the world's most advanced photo application. I hope nobody complains.

I haven't played with it but I hope you're right about how good Photos is. I'm looking forward to it.

It lacks so much of Aperture's editing tools, and organizational abilities, its not a viable Aperture alternative. Basic iPhoto stuff, yes, Aperture no.

Perfect Photo Suite 9 is an excellent alternative to Lightroom.

It's a stand alone program, but hopefully Photos for OSX will allow it to be a plug-in like with Aperture.

They probably didn't make the exact statement "Photos is replacing iPhoto and Aperture", but they announced the death of iPhotos and Aperture at the same time they introduced Photos, so that was implied. Without a doubt Photos is replacing iPhoto, even if they didn't say that explicitly, and by implication at least it's replacing Aperture too.

Photos is free.

How is that "chasing the money"?

I know: Even though it's free, they'll still make money on it.
How?
VOLUME!
Free? You have a lot to learn, a LOT to learn. If a business gives you something it means that they have recouped their money already, or they will recoup their money soon.
Especially in the case of Apple.
