Apple Confirms Aperture to Be Removed From Mac App Store After Launch of Photos for OS X

Lol. I see. Apple is "chasing the money" by releasing brand new apps that are more intuitive and capable than ever before...completely free of charge. Makes sense.

The app is free but it is geared towards cloud photos archiving so you'll need to purchase more iCloud space, every year. That's the goal.

They will have more people buying space on iCloud than they had buying Aperture probably so even at a much lower price point, a yearly fee for more people = a lot more $ for Apple.

Let's not act like this was some altruistic move by Apple.

Except most of the former user base that actually did leave Final Cut Pro X never came back.

Yes, because it's great maintaining outdated software yourself. /s

Back in the day, I tried that for a while back with Quicken... Gave up. Not worth it at all, you move on and find something to replace it.

I don't see what I am going to have to maintain exactly. I'll just keep using it as long as I can. If it stops working in the next 4 years, then I'll come back to this thread and admit I was wrong. Then again, I don't take my photos very seriously, so I would not give this advice to someone that does.

May be a dumb question, but what does this mean for those of us who will keep using it, and possibly upgrading to a new machine in say 6 months. If they remove it form the app store, how do we get the latest version. I have a boxed copy of 2.0 I think, but I've since moved on to updating through the app store.

They are not removing it from the App Store; just disabling the "buy" option. You can still download.

Why doesn't Apple just call it iPhoto?

Apple calls the new watch "Apple Watch", and now they replace iPhoto with "Photo". Why doesn't it stick to the iNames? This is confusing...

Who buys magazines these days, photos come in through the internet and generally look ok with out much photo shopping. You may crop a little and brighten but thats about it. It has to be fast and simple.

Yeah, don't much care here. Been using adobe Creative Suite since forever, (Currently CS6) and iPhoto I use for the iCloud based Photo stream feature. Nothing else. If the new Photos app has that, and you know it will. Bring it on!

In fact, Photos has the better version of Photostream. iCloud Photo Library.

Maybe Apple will create different plugins/upgrades and charge for them. 9.99 a piece.

Actually they're leaving that up to developers, they can tap into the Photos library, like on iOS8, so you can use apps you like and tweak the photo centrally, rather than having copies of the same photo all over the place.

In all honesty, I see a photos pro app launching in the near future. I feel like Apple just feels the need to sort of relaunch everything.

Who knows, maybe I'm hoping for too much.

Where are the PRO's!

From David Pogue's review here:
And these Aperture features (among others) are missing:
Flags, star ratings, color labels
Projects
Merge/split libraries
Split view
Loupe
Camera tethering
Stacks
Brushable adjustments
Adjustment resets
Curves
Metadata batch adjustments

IMO this is a very short list.. there are more complex things such as metadata smart albums (and the endless possibilities of organization).

Book creation, which is amazing with some of the book venders publishing their templates

Custom Slideshows, which allows full customization of media editing, zooming customization to music and exporting (saves me using FCPX or other video editing tool).

Third party plugg-in roundtripping (i.e.. NIK software, Noise Ninja, Photoshop etc)

Multi-screen (second screen) image mirroring or comparing (this is huge pro benefit)

Key-command mapping customization (again a pro level tool)

Custom Exporting & Watermarking (pro pro pro)

:mad::apple:
(Lightroom sucks) :(

A lot of people here seem to be missing the fact that Aperture really wasn't making the money it needed to stay viable anymore.

Otherwise Apple would have kept it and only killed off iPhoto. Additionally, to substantiate my point, if Apple were solely thinking about the profit, if Aperture was making any money for them, they would have kept it and integrated iCloud Photo Library into it, then they would have made a bucket load with the cost of Aperture as well as the money from iCloud Drive storage. The fact that they're killing Aperture off just shows it wasn't worth keeping.

I doubt it will be a separate app. Either they're leaving it for other apps as extensions, like with iOS. Or they'll add features to the new Photos app. They're all about simplifying. They won't do 2 separate photos apps.

That they still sell Aperture today seems highly unethical to me.

They should have discontinued selling Aperture the moment they announced that it is basically dead in the water going forward. If there won't be anymore support, why keep selling it to the public?

If Apple took it off the MAS now people would be screaming bloody murder that Apple didn't let them get it while they still could. If you don't have it yet and want it, you still have a month or so to grab it, and it will still be downloadable on the MAS for users who previously purchased it, in it latest version before it was removed. Don't understand really how this is unethical.

As an iPhoto user, it apears that Photos promises to be a breath of fresh air. A disappointment for those who were Aperture users.

Uh.. yeah this is true, BUT Aperture wasn't making profit because APPLE took the foot off the gas as soon as they had a little competition. Why I don't know. But they had the pro photo market IN THE BAG and they dropped the ball. Their choice was not to fight, not to be profitable.

Photo is far from being an Aperture replacement. As a long time Aperture user, I'll have no choice to migrate to Lightroom as many others did already.

I've moved on from Aperture (a bit late but none the less), tired of Apple making everything so dumb for the masses or treating everyone as simpletons and then wondering why applications made for pros (which they treat like crap) get lash back from pros and the like. Comments such as Aperture not making a profit should add an application can't make money when said company doesn't update/upgrade said product AND leaves people hanging for YEARS, yes years, figure it out

I have gone the way of lightroom which supports all my plugins and keeps a continuing forward roadmap, good or bad the key word is continuing…

Too bad, I'll miss Aperture.

I don't. It's slow as hell since a few years on all my fast macs. I would have been ok if Apple invested time into upgrading the app. However the days are over since apple takes pro app development serious.

Yeah. I totally get only supporting 1 photo app but why kill off the best features? Would it really been so difficult to migrate those to the new photos app in a way that advanced users could take advantage/continue using but gen pub isn't forced to?

As an aperture user, I'd be more willing to spend $ on iCloud to back up my much much much larger pro library than just my camera pics. Now I'll be forced to split things up and make my workflow a little less seamless. I think they are missing out on a market segment here.

I hope there is integration with Google Drive /Google Photos for storage.

That would defeat the purpose of the app, which is to get people to buy iCloud storage.

Exactly!

I am excited to see how third party apps will use the Photo's "platform" to provide us with some great capability.

Think about it...Apple provides the base: 1) Apple sells iCloud storage (revenue), 2) Apple farms out app development (cost reduction), 3) 3rd parties fill the void with some pretty cool stuff that meets both general and niche market needs with Apple getting a share for their sales (more revenue). Sounds like a pretty good business model to me.

This is exactly the point I've made in other threads. Look at where most of Apple's revenue is coming from and it isn't in applications. If Apple had closed the iPhone to only their apps, would it be the product it is today? Hardly, they need the developer community to develop for their platforms and Photos is just another platform.

The plan to have 3rd party add-ins was pretty evident from the WWDC presentation on the Photos API. I expect to see apps like Pixelmator to be an add-in for Photos.

Adobe Lightroom (as of version 5.7) has an Aperture catalog conversion tool built in.

If you're still on Aperture, you really should consider switching. Lightroom's been the better program since LR3. Even with LR2 it was debatable.

It really isn't better, just seems to work better for some people.

To me, it's allot like being forced to use left handed scissors.. Can make it work, but it's painful. Hard to justify paying for that.

I'll just stick w/ Aperture and 10.9 until my last machine that runs them dies, then hope LR really is improved (for how I use it) by then, or that Photos is improved/extended to be a better replacement for Aperture.
