Actually, I would say that given the price of the device, Apple should most definitely have tested this and provided a coaster if necessary.

So — let me understand this.. you have for example a nice wooden table — and your gonna place “anything” on it — without the thought in mind — that it “might” scratch or damage the wood ?

Do you just “toss” your keys on your nice wood services?

No you don’t. If you “value” your furniture or your HomePod you don’t place glasses, cups, literally anything without first thinking what I’m doing may — may damage my furniture or device! Just like I worry about my iPhone getting scratched or scratching my furniture !

Why o why does it always come down to “well if they are gonna charge so much for it it shouldn’t do this”?

A n y t h i n g “we” put on fragile surfaces should be done with care.

Period.

Let me ask most of you this... would you place your Pioneer home theater receiver on your surfaces and think it may not damage or even cause a potential fire? You wouldn’t right. Would you be on their forums saying for the $1500 you paid for it Pioneer should have known this could happen? You wouldn’t. Well come to think of it many of you would.

I bought a white HomePod yesterday, and when I got home I lifted up the white Sonos Play:1 it was going to replace, and found that the Sonos had left a black circle on my black wood nightstand. Please post an article about the Sonos circles.

This is an apple forum, how about you going to a sony forum for sonos problems instead of expecting someone to spoon feed you something that is not about an apple product.

Warning? It's a FEATURE! "Not sure where you used to keep your homepod? Not anymore! Get it in the right spot every time!"
Once you have identified the right spot for HomePod that gives you room filling sound, leave the HomePod there for couple of hours and play songs from beats one station at 75% for couple of hours. HomePod will automatically mark that spot on the furniture for future reference. That's what the user guide said :p

I think it's the perfect opportunity for Apple to move into the furniture business. You won't be able to see white marks of the HP - guaranteed.

Here is a leaked shot of some of Ive's design ideas:

Every photo they show is of oiled wood.

Guess what, everything leaves a mark on oiled wood. Guess what, the nice thing about oiled wood is you can re-oil it and marks go away.
but everything you set on oiled wood that moves, whether it has a woofer in it or not, leaves a mark. Even Cutting boards, ironically, used to protect a butcher block top, leave marks. But you just oil them back out. it's what you do with oiled wood. it's why people like it.

If you don't like marks on your wood then use Urethane. Or use a coaster.

By the way people report marks left by Alexa too. Google's device, which buzzes and vibrates more than others, actually comes with a rubber pad to compensate for crappy acoustic design rattling it off the shelf.

Busted. https://hardware.slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=11746569&cid=56124379 you posted it word for word both places.

You were called out on BS there too. Don't you have better things to do with your time than troll around the web with your fervent devotion?

Yawn - seriously this is news? FFS - Mine sits well on a wooden table and haven't had any issues, rings, dents, dips or tattoos..

Seriously, who really gives a flying ****?
Because the device has reportedly damaged some tables. And thus, Apple thought it important enough to warn people.

Why are you struggling over the fact that not everyone lives in your same table world experience? If you aren’t having problems, good for you.

you have no idea how quality bookshelf speakers look like

this is called attention to details what Apple was famous for couple of years ago

Attention to detail?
Do these same people put glasses on the same table without a coaster?

Please, we have a really nice oiled table in the dining room. Nothing goes on it without something being under it.

The urge to leave a comment that is nothing but laughing is so incredibly strong right now.

The HomePod is vastly overpriced crap, not worthy of Apple. We knew that when it was announced, we knew that before it ever left the first ring on the first table.

But this actually does surprise me. Has Apple completely abandoned quality control testing?

It's the polish used, not the HomePod. I've had those white marks before with several different items. Toothpaste takes it out.

It's not "damaging wood furniture." It's reacting to oil or wax on the wood that isn't naturally there.

Yup. And specifically Danish oil. I suspect Tung oil might cause the same reaction. And perhaps linseed oil.
