It is not very obvious, but apparently you can tap the Widget and then you can disable the automatic switching and choose a device. But only in edit mode and when it is already on your screen.
Oh my was this there in the beta too?

Easy. Because they want you to buy a new phone if you have an XR or 11.
Sometimes I do genuinely believe that. However you can get the percentage on the X, which is obviously older.
This time I don’t believe it’s to get you to upgrade.

Perhaps it's to indirectly let people know if they get Pro models, they will get better and more iOS tweaks. Dynamic Island is a perfect example. They have probably kept 12,13,14 regular models not to make it too obvious, but this seems to be their direction.

New Member here;

I am currently looking to get my first iPhone, due to the long support from Apple and adding to my iPad Air 5th (which Samsung is now slowly open to, at least on their flagship phones), switching from a Galaxy A7 (2018) Duos and debating either the SE (2022) or the iPhone Mini 13 as my foray into Apple (both having some advantages and disadvantages to me (i.e. preferring Touch ID, but am flabberghasted about missing features in the SE that would be already included in an Android phone of similar price). However stuff like these leaves me asking if I should go to iOs / Apple, even if those things are benign, they do add up, at all or still hang on my Samsung Phone (despite having installed the spider app, due to an unfortunate drop).

I am certainly not in the market of a 14 or 14 pro, since a small phone is actually what I am looking for :(. I know that I am not the demographic that moves phones, but stuff like that, where you need to ask "Why did they do it like this way?" has methinking.

It’s of one the most useful features that was missing from iPhones since X.
I enabled it immediately on my 13 Pro Max.

I’m very glad to have the percentage indicator back in any form, but I do hope the design improves.
Maybe there is a toggle on the 14 Pro we have yet to see that can make the icon and battery percent side-by-side?
There are so many designs people showed with the numbers in the battery that are way more appealing… Apple please fix this

Those models specifically have low DPI displays, so rendering something as small as that might make it look weird or illegible.

It's not the same. The text was on its own line and not contained within a pill, it would definitely struggle to fit.

iPhone 14 pro - 460 ppi.
iPhone 12 Mini - 476 ppi.

I reckon it would be perfectly readable on the Mini.

i wonder if it would be possible to show the percentage in a lockscreen widget.

the Apple one only shows me information about the watch.
If you have nothing connected, then that widget shows phone battery

There’s not enough room to show the percentage with the notch taking up space.
it can live inside the battery icon for sure…

Apple is just very inconsistent following their human interface guidelines. Well, most companies are who am I kidding lol

Funny thing is that coincidentally, the devices it's missing on happen to be the cheapest model in each years lineup.

If you can't get it on your phone, you probably aren't missing much. I tried it for about five hours yesterday and then reverted to the old behavior. I found it really hard to read, especially when the phone is being charged (when it's white text on light green background). It was easier for me to just glance at the graphic representation without worrying about being able to read the number. It's just really disappointingly bad design, as others have said.

The XR/11 they probably decided it was too low of resolution to look good.
Not having it on the mini (whose users need it more!) seems stranger. The mini has a higher resolution but is the physical size of the battery smaller and by how much?

iPhone XS gets it too.

Also, I'm sure the number of people who upgrade their phones due to a missing battery percentage readout that they can get anyway with a single interaction will be well into the astonishing double-digit range.

Talk about people making a mountain out of a molehill. Sheesh.
Do you have maybe a Youtube Channel called Daylitekk, sounds like it, Apple is not greedy at all, and they are amazing people who want to help you!

What's more disturbing is that the charging message and battery percentage is no longer shown on the lock screen. Before 16 you could raise the iPhone and see how much it was charged (shown in text under the clock). The stupid battery widget doesn't show percent, only the ring they are so obsessed about.

it's not the DPI: it's the number of available physical pixels. the unsupported devices all have a horizontal resolution of 1080 pixels or less.

(not saying it couldn't be done, design-wise, but that's what's common in the unsupported devices.)

EDITED TO CLARIFY: <= 1080 pixels and a notch.
