Following iOS 16's public release, Apple has confirmed that users of older generation iPhone models will miss out on the ability to show their iPhone's battery percentage directly in the status bar.

In an updated support document, Apple says that the new battery percentage display is not available on the iPhone XR, iPhone 11, the iPhone 12 mini, and the iPhone 13 mini. Apple provides no additional information about why these devices will miss out on the new feature.

Apple added the battery percentage display icon in an iOS 16 beta over the summer. The new toggle, which can be found within Settings and Battery, lets users always see their battery percentage directly in the status bar without having to swipe down into Control Center.

Ever since the iPhone X with the notch, users have asked Apple to make it easier to see their iPhone's battery level directly in the status bar. Still, Apple's recent implementation has proven to be controversial.

The new icon includes the battery percentage within the icon rather than to the left of it. The white battery icon remains completely filled in until the battery reaches 20% or lower, at which point a fifth of the icon turns red and the rest of the icon becomes translucent.

Been waiting for the return of this for years. And Apple has buggered it up. What’s happened to Apple’s aesthetics? The font for the battery level percentage is just too heavy. As is, in fact, EVERY font Choice on the new customisable Lock Screen. I turned it on with great anticipation, and then turned it off after an hour. And, no matter how full the battery level is, say at 50%, the actual battery icon shows full. Terrible design. Bring back Jon

I find the battery update of iOS16 somewhat annoying. When plugging in the phone or placing it on a wireless charger, the large battery icon with battery percentage no longer appears. The only way to see it is to swipe down. I don't get why that was removed as it now requires an additional action from the user. Just let me see the percentage even if it only appears for 5 seconds

I'm guessing it is possible on the iPhone 12 mini, but likely Apple's way to further differentiate lower/older from higher/newer end models.

I just remembered this after reading this. It's not enabled by default. It looks a bit strange suddenly having it there now on my 13 Pro Max.

Not sure I understand why so many phones are incompatible. I'd be fine with just the number, too. A number at a glance is far more valuable to me than a visual battery fill. Never understood why it was changed to begin with.

Noo, the SE is still the cheapest and has the percentage as before.

No, SE still displays the percentage outside the icon. Which is better.
Yep, though the SE is different as it doesn't have such limited space.

I don’t get this obsession with knowing the percentage. You can see how much is left in the icon.

Why do you need to know the exact percentage?
I'm at a complete loss as to why you are obscessed with not wanting to see the percentage. Does it interfere with your life? Does it cause pain, anger, and grief? What exactly is your objection to the percentage?

At this point I wish Apple would just be honest. They are just insulting our intelligence.

Either that or they really do think we’re just a bunch of idiots, with small minds and feeble hands and half blind eyes.

After all, you don’t have to deal with a SIM card!

Answer my question
You ca und rst nd th s, r ght? So why should I write every single letter when you can guess the rest? A couple pixels here or there are easily an hour or more of use time. If you don’t understand that 🤷‍♂️

‘There is not enough space on the Mini’.. I use 2 MacBook 12” at a native 2304*1440 resolution on a daily basis. The only problem is battery consumption, other than ‘there is not enough space’. I can assure you that on the Mini the space in the battery it advances, compared to the MacBook at that resolution.

Easy. Because they want you to buy a new phone if you have an XR or 11.

Do you seriously think someone is going to tempted to buy a new phone just so they can see an overlayed percentage on their battery icon? 🤣

EDIT: People "disagreeing" with this post - why? Don't you think that would be a bit ridiculous to be tempted to upgrade your phone just to see a battery percentage overlayed on your battery icon? Come on. To claim this is a marketing ploy on Apple's part is just silly. And the newer iPhones have PLENTY of far more meaningful feature upgrades over the older ones that speak for themselves - if those aren't enough to make you want to upgrade, a little two-digit number at the top right of your display isn't going to.

There are multiple widget options to choose for battery. Select the one with the percentage...
I’m only seeing two. A compact circle style icon, and a double width widget with the device name, charge bar and percentage. Seems like they are determined not to give us a simple percentage.

Who has time to waste on this when there are rumors about iPhone 15, the best phone ever?

iPhone XS gets it too.

Also, I'm sure the number of people who upgrade their phones due to a missing battery percentage readout that they can get anyway with a single interaction will be well into the astonishing double-digit range.

Talk about people making a mountain out of a molehill. Sheesh.
I haven't heard a darned thing about the upgrade that makes it anything more than a very slight alternation. I'll only install it, as I usually do, for app compatability.

I always use this widget
