Damn. I was gonna upgrade to an iPhone 8 Plus next week. Should I really wait until a new iPhone comes out?
I thought the cpus in most phones weren't as badly affected as laptop/desktop cpus.[/QUOTE]

Wait for a bit and see how this shakes out. A guy today showed me the impact the software patches have on performance. And it is not good. Intel is not telling the whole story. Arm is affected by Spectre so the phones are affected.
[doublepost=1515371625][/doublepost]There is going to be a terrible chill across the entire tech industry because of this.

On what platform?

A couple screen shots of CPU utilization. The first was a server in AWS running REDIS on their memcached service. The second was a screenshot of the CPU utilization from EPIC games on their fortnight backend server.
[doublepost=1515374009][/doublepost]Here are the links:

https://twitter.com/adys/status/949...src^ios|twgr^com.apple.UIKit.activity.Message
[doublepost=1515374071][/doublepost]Both show CPU utilization increase 2.5 to 3 times after the patch.

Yeah, the more I realize the impact of this, it could kill Intel. Is Intel “too big to fail”?

This suggests to me that anyone that was thinking of buying a new computer or phone should now wait until this bug is properly fixed in hardware. So, no hardware sales for Apple in 2018 for any of their products.
Yes, and for any other computer and smartphone manufacturer out there.

But why did El Cap and Sierra not receive the patch at the same time as High Sierra? That seems unusual given that the security update was released for all three OS's on the same date.
Apple has a history of not applying all security updates to earlier versions of OSes which otherwise receive security updates. This one is no exception to that.

Totally ridiculous that Apple chose not to patch Sierra. Now we are stuck with an MDM only deployment and cannot use NetImage.

I left this issue after Apple indicated last week that the security patch covered El Cap, Sierra, and HS. Is it still the case that Apple has reneged on their initial statement and our best guess (we should NOT have to be guessing about this!) is that only HS is going to be patched?

We have no way of knowing.

You gotta love these "research" places that LOOK for this sort of thing. Does anyone think criminals would have likely found this particular flaw on their own when they failed to do so for 40 years??? No, these guys openly publish the very bugs they find to everyone so criminals can get their hands on it and wreak havoc. You can thanks them for screwing your bank account or whatever a year or two from now. This sort of thing should be kept classified to only the chip manufacturers (eyes only). Telling the whole world just lets the whole world screw you.

You also should let this go. There is no need to keep these mindless arguments going on for eternity. That user apologized for his potentially inaccurate wording, why can't you let it go at that. Just end this ridiculousness! And put it to rest! Maybe I'm not a genius when it comes to computers, but I know how life works, and this ain't going nowhere.

I just made a comment on a forum. Which you then felt the need to comment on.
I'm done with the issue, I'm not sure why you wanted to bring it up again. I suggest you take your own advice. :)

Just updated my 6s to 11.2.2. Geekbench 4 numbers about the same before the update.

I still have not seen any update in the App Store on my Mac Mini to fix this...(running Mavericks)

I'm not sure if GeekBench would be the best way to benchmark for a performance hit. Some apps might not show loss in performance, while others might.

It sucks that Apple hasn't posted anything for Sierra and El Capitan except for some Safari patch. What about those who don't use their browser?

Here come more obsolescence lawsuits...

Possibly but it is perfectly fine according to Apple.

Our testing with public benchmarks has shown that the changes in the December 2017 updates resulted in no measurable reduction in the performance of macOS and iOS as measured by the GeekBench 4 benchmark, or in common Web browsing benchmarks such as Speedometer, JetStream, and ARES-6.
