Great numbers and this weekend could add another 6 million if supplies don't run out. And yet, I am not among them. I will wait to go during the week and look at it to decide if I want to buy or stick with the 5s. I am hoping to hear about the iPad which is the device i really need to update. But who knows, once the phone is in my hand in store I could fall in love (I am still not a fan of phablets).

Between the new A8 and the new screen technology behind the iPhone 6, plus TouchId, I expect a very compelling iPad Air 2 and new iPad Mini Retina (at least 20% lighter).

The point is that if their site worked properly they could've had millions more orders.

From what I have read, they ran out of supply and everything is back ordered for several weeks now, so I don't think they would have sold more. If I tried to pre-order and got a 3 week delivery estimate I would have cancelled the transaction and waited to walk into the store. So although frustrating for sure, I doubt the problems on-line reduced the numbers significantly.

If they are expecting 60-80 million devices to be sold this quarter, why is my 6+ (ordered 4 hours after preorders started) going to take a month to be delivered when it was one of the first 4 million to be ordered?

You really think that many people could afford to buy two at once? My guess is its a small number and those who weren't sure would wait to buy in store.

They don't need to be able to afford it. They just need to have a big enough unused credit limit.

It was down because it couldn't handle four million in five minutes.

I think Apple's site was down because they kept it down. Those websites can usually handle that many requests without issues. And consider that hackers launch attacks on such important days to mess with everyone as well.

But I thought people didn't want big phones?

Hahahahahaha

I thought so too. But Apple reality distortion field has made everyone a believer. The majority of early adopters are jumping straight into phablets, not stopping for the large 4.7" in their way.

One day you are teasing your Android compadres, the other you have your own pop tart in your hands !

I'm expecting them to put "Retina HD" on the Air 2.
In both the new Air and new retina mini

Wow... I hope we guys from all the other countries where ordering starts on Sept 26 don't have to wait too long for our iPhones being delivered...I'm hoping for 2 weeks max! I've been using Macs for almost 7 years now, this is my first iPhone ever and I can't wait!

I think Apple assigns contingents to each country, so the chance is high that a large part of the iPhones for the Sep 26 countries have already been produced and are waiting in some warehouse.

As an example, the launch day iPhones ran out here in Germany while it was still possible to pre-order an iPhone 6 for 9/19 delivery in the US. So the phones are not all coming out of one big "pool" but out of "country pools".

If these are numbers in the first "24 hours" who knows how many they sold over the weekend of pre order.

There are people like that? People who order two phones, being 100% sure that they will return one? Well, that is the very definition of anti-social.

A returned phone can't be resold at full price, so that has to be priced into the price of the non-returned phones, implying that all customers pay for the people who can't just wait until both phones are in the store, sitting next to each other for everyone to try and compare.

I ordered two (same size though) and have no intention of returning the one I don't keep. Why would I, when I can easily sell it for above retail price and Apple doesn't lose a thing.

Only 4 million in 24 hours... Hmmmm

You mean to tell me the site was down because Apple couldn't handle 4 million customers in a day? Eeek! That's not good.

Its not 4 million in a day. It's 4 million AT ONCE, all clicking on crap, entering numbers, etc.... You try it!

Read what you just wrote. Apple can sell 60-80 million phones but doesn't necessarily mean they'll ship :)

+1

Apple has certainly allocated different sized "country pools" and future production accordingly.
