I had no problem with the previous version.

Do you live in Manhattan or downtown San Francisco? That would explain it. I live in Austin and it was extremely poor and inaccurate before.

Apple Maps are laughably bad in my part of Germany - my entire village is considered a forest. No buildings, no fields, only roads in a forest...

Same in many places in Latin America. Directions are useless, labels are incorrect and entire areas are outdated at least on over a decade.

Now add the road hazard and speed trap tagging like Google Maps.

Not just that, I love how Google Maps would tell you precisely which exit to take, clear directions, accurate ETAs and when using public transportation it would tell you in real time where your bus is. Google Maps is still well ahead.

How can I tell I'm running the new version? I don't see any overtly visible changes.
Everyone has the new map for the rest of the 50 states as of today. The most visible change is that the map’s a lot greener than before, especially outside major cities where there’s more vegetation, as vegetation is now shaded. You might also see things like baseball diamonds, tracks, tennis courts, swimming pools, and so on.

So, if you see a sharp cutoff between green-shaded areas in the U.S. compared to Mexico or Canada, you have the new map. Or you can look for those finer details while zoomed into populated areas.

Just going to skip on over Canada and go right to Europe.
On the contrary, Canada is included in the next phase: https://mwp14.ls.apple.com/imagecollection/locations/ca
I’ll be keeping a keen eye on this as the year unfolds, as Ireland is also in the list. Not too long to wait, I hope.

Hopefully, that’s about to change. https://mwp14.ls.apple.com/imagecollection/locations/de

I love Apple Maps.
But the data really stays on the device? If I change my iPhone, I lose all my favorites? I really find that it's a shame there's no continuity between the iOS version and macOS versions (e.g. no access to favourites, lists, etc.).

It's great that the redesign is already coming to Europe in the coming months! I live in Canada and I've been hinted that it's close to release here too: I received a notification once, even though I couldn't notice any difference.

Yeah, that's what I fear will happen too... we'll be waiting until 2023 to see this update for some reason.
Unlikely: https://mwp14.ls.apple.com/imagecollection/locations/de

I hope the improvements make it to Itay. Since moving here I'm reminded just how US-centric Apple remains. We don't get the same products until later, if at all. Thinking of HomePod, specifically. Apple Maps in very poor here in Rome. I want to be optimistic.
Italy is part of the next phase: https://mwp14.ls.apple.com/imagecollection/locations/it

This article misses the really big launch of the day...stop sign/traffic light integration was released nationwide as well and not just around the Look Around areas as it was up until yesterday. This is a game changer that no other map has or even looks like they will add anytime soon.

And some of the comments above are laughable comparing to Google. Apple ETA's have been proven to be just as or even more accurate than Google or Waze. Apple Transit directions are synched directly with the transit services or government agencies and give more info than Google. Yes, it isn't available in this detail everywhere yet, but it is WAY better at showing live train/bus locations as well as more detailed info like what platforms trains are boarding or arriving at.

Sticking with Google Maps. Apple Maps is so inconsistent and unreliable. I search for a local restaurant and it tries navigating me to a location hundreds of miles away. Google Maps has always been superior. I just wish you could set Google Maps as the default maps app with Siri integration.

I just checked it out. Apple Maps is still terrible in NYC.
thank-you for providing no information, just complaining. If it is so terrible, maybe you could illuminate us as to how?

Really? Updated yesterday and I see no noticeable difference.
Are you in the are that got rolled out? Maybe it rolled out before in your area, so no change today

ALL users? or ALL iOS 13 users?
Good question, but this is from the actual article: "Building on the new map, iOS 13 introduced many new features that help users navigate and explore the world with a simple Building on the new map, iOS 13 introduced many new features that help users navigate and explore the world with a simple tap". which seems to indicate that the map is a separate product from iOS 13 (let's not forget MacOS has maps too, it looks great in there). the article goes on to indicate that iOS builds on the map to add new features.

I am just too used to google maps. I basically know by habit where to tab so using Apple Maps is always irritating when I try it, therefore I always end up going right back to google maps

I've switched to strictly using Apple Maps for directions but they still have a horrible algorithm for predicting what you're looking for. For example, I'll look for a specific local restaurant called Jake's BBQ and it will give me Jake's BBQ 1200 miles away instead of the one here that's technically called Jake's Backyard BBQ.

I do the same test in Google maps and it comes up properly. I wish I could use Googles search feature with Apples directions/turn by turn.
in reality it doesn't always do that. sometimes for some things, yes (a mystery), but mostly works great. However, you are not forced to use it, if you prefer, use Google

that is the thing really, it is more what you are used to and prefer. Google always messes me up, cause its so different from what I'm used to, so I don't use it. My daughter does, annoying

I'm the opposite. Apple Maps has given me a *better* experience with navigation in 99% of the times. I prefer how the instructions are narrated and how I have seamless Apple Watch integration.

Too many times, Google Maps was slow to provide instructions or there was no voice at all. Just silence. Very frustrating! In the remaining 1% of the time, Google Maps excels at choosing the best route, whereas Apple Maps will send you through U-turn routes.
