Awesome. Can’t wait to apply the update. I’ve gotten to the point where Apple Maps is solely my main course for destinations, I still do have Google Maps, but that’s more of a ‘backup method’, which shows you how much Apple Maps has improved, I’d say over the course of the last three years.

For example, I'll look for a specific local restaurant called Jake's BBQ and it will give me Jake's BBQ 1200 miles away instead of the one here that's technically called Jake's Backyard BBQ.
I once asked Siri for directions to a local pizza place. She mis-guessed, and offered me the wrong place. When I said, no, that's not the one I want, she started offering me Italian restaurants... in Italy. Over six thousand miles away.

Regardless, she mostly gets it right, and my experience with Apple's Maps in Southern California have been excellent.

The most pointless pissing match against Google .... ever. Never play a game you can't win and certainly don't enter a game you cant win in the third quarter of play.

Depends on your definition of “winning”.

By getting the majority of iOS users on Apple maps, Apple deprives Google of a lot of data from people who might otherwise be using the Google maps app, which in turn costs Google ad revenue.

Second, Apple is no longer dependent on Google for providing such a critical piece of infrastructure. I have been using Apple maps for many years now. Google could remove their app from the App Store and I wouldn’t bat an eyelid or shed a tear.

Google is now in a very unenviable position of having their most lucrative customers locked behind the Apple ecosystem, and having less leverage and bargaining power than ever.

All because they had the temerity to play punk with Google maps in iOS 5.

Never forget.

Hope this new commitment to map quality eventually reaches us here in Tokyo; they use a third-tier provider for their location/POI data here, and it's *awful* :(

Given that Apple started maps in response to Googles actions in iOS 5 (2011). I have always thought that the original Apple Maps App headed by Richard Williamson in late 2012 was in fact a very good attempt within less than a 2 year span to make something competitive.

Sure it had issues, sure it was wrong with some roads and directions, but if you consider it has taken Apple until 2019-20 (6-7 years) to get something competitive with Google, I really think that poor old Mr Williamson was treated unfairly.

I recently tried using maps for the first time in like 3 years. It was an absolute disaster. I think Apple needs to let this one go, once and for all.

OK? Why do you think Apple Maps should be completely abandoned? You provided your basic input without any stance on why you believe that, which no one’s inclined to support your reasoning if you can’t even back up your argument why you think Apple Maps should be abolished.

ironically, I actually said in this same thread, three years ago Apple Maps needed some revamping, and it’s not even a comparison how much better/improved it is today, and it’s my sole ‘go to’ for navigating to my destinations.

I’m guessing it directed him to drive off a cliff or go the wrong way down a one way street killing his whole family...ya know...”complete disaster”

We are in year SEVEN! of apple maps. Year seven of an app from an one and a half trillion dollar company that's still a disgraceful embarrassment. All the reason anyone needs.

NZ does not have new maps data, so I guess I’m confused as to what you think you are testing?
I’m not aware of it having been available for testing. I am not currently enrolled in the beta programme anyway.

While I do appreciate how much Apple Maps has improved in recent years, there's a reason why I still use both Google Maps and Waze on my iPhone X, mostly because of better traffic monitoring and better map accuracy.

I would be pretty upset if they "let this one go" - I strongly prefer it over Google and other map apps - it works tremendously well for me.

I've had Google Maps tell me "use any lane to make a U-turn", while I was doing 65mph on the freeway - in the middle lane of 5 lanes (seriously, it put U-turn symbols on each of the 5 freeway lanes). Google Maps isn't without its problems.

Just follow the Google Maps subreddit. Map errors and goofy stuff all day long. I’ve personally had more road errors and wrong directions with Google than Apple Maps.

Google had me making illegal left turns 3 times in one week. I switched to Apple Maps and just would double check POI’s since that was the one thing really questionable with Apple Maps at the time. Directions were always spot on though and I fell in love with the UI.

My favorite feature of Google Maps: the ability to program multiple destinations/stops for a trip. There’s long drives where I like to pre-plan where I’ll dine or stretch. Does Apple Maps have this ability yet?

Look Around is great but pathetically limited. A handful of cities?

Pathetic? Christ...the drama in this thread. It is above and beyond Street View...it’s not even close. They’ve tested in limited large cities and will most likely be across the ENTIRE country this year.

Big cities are packed with faces and cars and we’re a great test of their automated censor software.

The fact that they released the stop sign/traffic light feature across the entire country today only shows that Look Around will probably have the same type of release or at least come out MUCH faster.
