I used it to go to a store around 20 mins away. I took me to an address where the building had been torn down. The store had moved 300 feet from the older store a mile away. Not even close, Apple.
I tried to go to a movie theater in Kahallui, Google had both in the middle of the ocean. dah, not even close Google. Apple Maps had them correct.

Apple Maps ist still GARBAGE!
las I checked, no one is forcing you to use it, but in truth, perhaps your evaluation criteria is flawed. Truth, you may prefer to use google, but Apple Maps is in fact fine, 1) contains a map, 2) knows where you are, 3) gives you directions to where you are going, 4) integrates with Apple Watch - really cool. ......... and on and on, and on

If all of us, could please check your local emergency rooms, hospitals, fire stations, police stations shelters, schools and favorite businesses. If everyone sends in the old locations as defunct and the new locations for them, they will update quickly.
Our fire station was corrected this way.

So...Google Maps is by no means perfect, as if one mistake makes Apple Maps unusable.

Canada should be soon... pretty sure they were mapping it but 🤷🏼‍♂️
so do us in Canada (or elsewhere) also see the fully finished maps of the states or only people WITHIN the states can see it?

I can’t agree, I’m afraid. It works extremely well here in Ireland and has for years. I’m looking forward to the update coming here very soon - probably later this year! And several other European countries also.(Germany, Spain, UK, Italy & Portugal)
It is improving definitely but I live in Poland and it hasn't been updated for many years in plenty of places. Especially in smaller towns and the countryside.

I love Apple Maps.
But the data really stays on the device? If I change my iPhone, I lose all my favorites? I really find that it's a shame there's no continuity between the iOS version and macOS versions (e.g. no access to favourites, lists, etc.).

It's great that the redesign is already coming to Europe in the coming months! I live in Canada and I've been hinted that it's close to release here too: I received a notification once, even though I couldn't notice any difference.
Your app use is tied to your Apple ID. Do you back up your phone to iCloud? If so, the app’s settings and personal particulars are copied to the cloud (which skeptics say is a loophole in Apple’s privacy assurances). Ultimately, when you set up a new (or additional device), you can use the back up to set up the device.

You can share your Map data using iCloud I assume because it’s a toggle in Settings. Am pretty sure I have looked for directions in the past few months on my iPhone and they’ve shown up on my iPad. 7C7D8F65-F94C-4FDE-A6CB-B53B01DAB197.jpeg

Apple Maps is absolutely useful to me in Europe. Yesterday, I arrived at the Brussel’s airport, picked up a rental car, and headed for my hotel in the Ardennes. Maps provided me with 100% perfect instructions and also gave guidance via my Apple Watch.

Last summer, I drove from Charles de Gaulle airport to Normandy, back through Paris on my way to the Ardennes, and then back to CDG to fly home. With the exceptions of two minor hiccups on the way to Normandy, Apple Maps worked like a charm.

So, all you buzzards who drop your little “it’s garbage“ comments must be paid by Google to make your stupid comments.

While I don't mind Apple Maps for in-town driving, the fact I cannot download areas locally to the phone, resulting in no coverage when outside of cell service (unless I have an active route, which seems to cache a certain number of tiles along the route,) makes them essentially useless to me.

Was using Maps yesterday so I can compare it with today's update. Yes, the new map is a lot clearer, much better resolution and detail.
In 3D, you can actually see all sides of a structure, instead of a fake perspective, but some objects, such as large signs, light poles and similar slim objects look distorted or inexistent.
Also, a road that crosses under a bridge looks like I curves up into the bridge.

But like you said in your post, Apple Maps will route and work through the non-coverage area.

It simply will not change the route, provide updated traffic info or allow you to search while in that area. GPS will still track your location and route you along the route given when started.

My point is I am a professional landscape photographer, and frequently drive through areas where there is no cell coverage at all. When I get to my campsite, I set up and take my photos, then overnight, and the next day I continue on to my next photography spot. Apple maps is now useless, since I am outside cell coverage, and to create a route, I first would need such coverage (try to use Apple maps in Southern UT, around Monument Valley, and up to Blanding...) I tried to use Apple maps in the past and end up with a 'grid of squares,' instead of a map... With Google maps, I download the area to my phone, and can do navigate normally. So, in my particular use case, Apple maps, based upon the chosen implementation, are useless.

That said, I do use Apple maps when driving on Interstates or in town, and they have always worked fine for me. I have also since switched to GaiaGPS for my non-roadway navigation, so I don't use either Apple or Google maps any longer when I'm not in good coverage; and GaiaGPS allows me to download different kinds of coverage maps as well (street, bicycling, hiking, topographic, public lands, etc.)

Makes sense in that application.

The only time I ever used downloaded Google Maps was when I was traveling to Sweden and didn't want to pay for the extra data. I wish it gave you more than just basic routing bleeps, but the ABILITY to route and do basic searches was nice.

Hoping that downloadable areas is an iOS14 feature for Maps. I think they are just so bogged down getting the core features updated and working. The requirement for downloadable maps is actually very small in the grand scheme of things.

Like others have mentioned, it's the iCloud sync. It works fine for me across Mac, iPad and iPhone. It would be nice to have a button or sidebar on the Mac version that lists favorites history like on the iPad or iPhone slide up menu. Today it is all done by clicking on the Mac app search bar.

I've switched to strictly using Apple Maps for directions but they still have a horrible algorithm for predicting what you're looking for. For example, I'll look for a specific local restaurant called Jake's BBQ and it will give me Jake's BBQ 1200 miles away instead of the one here that's technically called Jake's Backyard BBQ.

I do the same test in Google maps and it comes up properly. I wish I could use Googles search feature with Apples directions/turn by turn.
Yeah, searching on Maps is awful.

I decided to try to switch away from Google Maps a couple of months ago. The first search I did was for "Dr. Bell" and it returned 3 results for Taco Bell in random parts over a 15 mile radius. It didn't even return the closest ones nor a complete list.

Just like the mobile phone industry, right? "Nokia and Blackberry are so big and strong, no one could ever take them down. Certainly not a computer company!"
They were overtaken and deservedly crushed by a completely new innovation. I have not seen one thing in apple maps since day one that screams anything but "us too".
