I'm confused

Has Apple lost their confidence? They are still capturing the majority of the smart phone profits, but it looks like they have decided the "market share pundits" need to be appeased to boost their stock price. Big screens, Android interface. Next up cheap plastic and OLED screens. It's like no one there has vision and they just woke up, looked at the market share numbers and decided - maybe we should try that.

Apple if you want more market share just make a crappy bland OS, a big over sized over saturated screen with poor craftsmanship and give it away for free. It's easy. You will lose money on them, but hey if it's good enough for the majority of android manufacturers it must be good enough for you.

But after you do that will please continue to make a normal sized phone so that I can buy one? Thanks.

4,7" is too big already, 5,7" is ridiculous for a phone.

For you maybe. I watch a lot of movies and read a lot of books on my phone, and I also use it to have remote access to my servers through ssh when I am traveling. I'd love a 5" or even larger display, with the same dpi as the current one.

Consider that different people have different needs, and don't consider a 5" phone large, after having owned analog cellphones as teens. If you want to see what a big phone is, look at pre-1998 cellphones. Those are ginormous. Today's large-screen phones are still small devices, but incredibly powerful and flexible. I want a tablet that is also a phone, so a 5" phone would do nicely.

Nobody wants a 5" iPhone more than me, but I'd need to see a few more "nobody wants to watch video on an iPod" type denials from Apple before I'd even consider this load of cr*p.

If you READ THE REUTERS article, there's no source for any of it.

And that's what needs to be discussed.

Fear the though of when it will come to the crunch when:-

- the iPhone will become too big to fit in your shirt pocket, and
- Bluetooth is *required* to use, since you'll look like an idiot holding a slice of bread to your head.

This is how i felt with the Note2, and I think Apple's heading in same direction..

Just yet another reason, to keep my 4s :)

Don't buy it then.

The problem with that is Apple isn't the biggest fan of giving us lots of choices. If they offer a rediculously large phone along with keeping the screen size of the iPhone 5, or better yet going back to the 3.5" screen Tyne I won't care. But given Apple's track record with giving people choices I expect if they increase screen size again the only way to get a smaller phone is to buy an older generation.

I would love a smaller phone.. one that's about 3 by 4 apps in size... am I the only one who thinks smaller would be nice?!

Next year is leaving it way too late for a bigger iPhone.

How so? Apple's already "late" to the large screen party. What's a year going to do? You think Android based phones are going to go, what, 7" ? That would be incredibly clownish IMHO if marketed mainly as a phone. I say max 4.7" ~ 4.9" for the iPhone, then simply give the iPad mini phone capabilities as well. Hell it has a nano-SIM slot already. You'll have the iPhone 5, 5s at the current 4" screen, then the iPhone 6 will be at 4.7 or 4.9". Finally the iPad mini "connect": the iPad with phone capabilities. All running iOS 7, that would be something to see.

The U.S. firm has discussed a price of $99 for the cheaper phone, the timing of which could slip to next year, one of the people said. It's not yet clear what the final price would be.

Apple itself has talked about a $99 price for the cheap iphone??????? Well, only if that's a subsidized price and if so that's meaningless. You can buy a brand new iphone now for $99 subsidized--the iphone 4S. What is the actual price of this, and without the subsidy tied to a ridiculous rateplan costing you thousands of dollars over the contract term? While I'm sure the big carriers will subsidize it, my understanding is this is targeted more towards prepaid, MVNOs, smaller carriers, and non-US markets, where phone subsidies are rare or minimal in price.

Perhaps they disagree with the absolute necessity of those benefits. After all, there are benefits to owning a stretch limo but if your need is nothing more than getting from point A to point B a VW Bug works just as well.

Well if we're talking about necessity then you don't need an iPhone to begin with.

And trends show consumers are wanting a bigger screen phone. If they want to keep their 4.0 screen then they can. But for a lot of people they want a slighty bigger screen.
comparing a 4.7 iphone to s stretch limo is apples and oranges.

The argument that Android users will move to Apple if they bring out a bigger phone is just incorrect. From my Android friends they like the bigger screen, agreed, but they like the control and customisation of Android, the ability to add custom ROMs etc, and mainly the cost of the phones. If Apple brought out a bigger screen it would not have these attributes and so will only really effect some users, by far not all.

But a jailbroken iphone with ios7 is all that's needed. It's pretty commonly known that I'm very critical of the iphone, but with ios7 and a jail break, this could be the perfect phone thanks to accessories.

Also they cost the same on contract and the gs4 is more off contract

Iphone 5 = 650 off contract, 200 on
Galaxy S4 = 699 off contract, 200 on

I tried a Galaxy Note 2 and found its 5.6" screen to be too big. You can't comfortably use it with one hand and it doesn't fit well in a pocket, especially now that summer is here. The HTC One, with a 4.8" screen, is just the right size (to me, at least).

Apple, I'm ready to come back home and dispense with the Android nonsense. But you gotta gotta GOTTA come out with something a whole lot better than the iPhone 5.

How doesn't the note 2 fit well in a pocket?

I played with one with an Otterbox on it and it fits in the pocket very well.

Android is essentially made for one handed use. Note 2 has one handed mode that even makes the keyboard smaller and shifts to the right or left.

Why does everyone say this...I have had every model of Iphone plus a SG3 with the supposed too large of a screen to fit in your pants pocket but its not. The SG3 actually fit better because it was large enough not to turn sideways in my rear pocket. Please stop saying a 4.7 screen is too big due to pocketability.

I agree, only times it doesn't fit in pockets is when you wear women's pants (they have smaller pockets) or really tight pants

And your point is what? That MacRumors is only a place for people with iPhones? Or that if you have Apple gear but not an iPhone - you aren't entitled to comment

I have an ipad & MBA but also prefer larger screen phones & currently carry a Samsung Galaxy Note 2. I've always been treated very kindly here.

Maybe Apple will make everyone happy and just give us a 3.5", 4.0", 4.5". It'll be a nightmare for developers and I don't really see the point of it, but whatever.

Personally I'd buy the 3.5". I think the most likely scenario is Apple just makes another 4". It's a phone, people, ffs. Maybe Apple should just make a wider range of smaller and larger tablets so people wanting a 6" monster phone can use a tablet instead.

On a personal level I also agree that a large phone is not an issue because of cargo pants. I could fit an iPad mini in there.

in an imaginary world, my iPhone would be big enough to surf the web comfortably, run iPad apps, have iPad-like battery life.. and not make me look like a douche (last part optional).

but but Schiller said that the current iphone 5 screen size is perfect:confused:

Well yes it is perfect... for one handed use and very pocket friendly. Also great for phone calls. The new iPhone is a bit harder to use one handed than the older iPhone but still far better than those huge Android phones. But while one handed use in applications is great, people don't use these things for phones so much anymore. From 2007 to now they have become more like little computers which was Jobs vision. So times have changed.

Now that they redesigned iOS 7 to go back and forth in applications using swipes rather than a back button at the top, the tall iPhone 5 is going to be "perfect" again for one handed use. But then the iOS 7 navigation redesign also means that they can go to wider phones without as much of a hit in usability since you can always swipe no matter how wide the phone. Interesting times ahead I say...

I think you hit a key point here, my husband marvels at my Galaxy Note 2 & has stated that it's really like having a small computer with me at all times. Steve Jobs and his vision were correct, there are a lot of us who really appreciate a small computer that can also make phone calls.

I understand why so many people like small form factor phones but does having a wider range of choices hurt anyone?
