Well yes it is perfect... for one handed use and very pocket friendly. Also great for phone calls. The new iPhone is a bit harder to use one handed than the older iPhone but still far better than those huge Android phones. But while one handed use in applications is great, people don't use these things for phones so much anymore. From 2007 to now they have become more like little computers which was Jobs vision. So times have changed.

Now that they redesigned iOS 7 to go back and forth in applications using swipes rather than a back button at the top, the tall iPhone 5 is going to be "perfect" again for one handed use. But then the iOS 7 navigation redesign also means that they can go to wider phones without as much of a hit in usability since you can always swipe no matter how wide the phone. Interesting times ahead I say...

Not really.

I can see the note being not so one handed friendly but the gs4 is perfect one handed.

Android phones aren't "huge" and aside from the phablets they do fit in pockets

Personally I think we will only see the lower cost iPhone this year, and most likely the iPhone 5S of which, I will not buy anyway.

I think the next big iPhone will have a 4.5 or 4.7 inch screen and that would be a good size, not sure they will try to complete with Samsung on the Godzilla sized phones?

I wonder just how many Samsung sells between the SIII, S4, and Note II, I would be the Note II has a much lower number anyway.

The conventional wisdom is that a phone cannot have a screen over 3.5 inches because then your thumb cannot reach all parts of the screen.

Anything over 3.5 inches requires that the user have hands the size of dinner plates and pants with clown pockets.

Wait - I meant 4 inches. Never mind.

i have a note ii for work and i can operate it with one hand just fine and my thumb can reach all parts of the screen. you guys are girls

Finally! Choice! I'd love a 5.7 screen
BTW if they wait until late 2014, their market share will drop even more. Get these larger iphones out later this year.

5.7 is highly unlikely. Just too big. And if they do release larger displays, don't expect it this year. Earliest would most likely be iPhone 6 next year.

my big hands and I would welcome a 4.7-5.7 inch screen, though it would be completely a gimmick unless you had side-by-side or top-bottom features like the Galaxy Note 2 and S4. Multi window would be the best use of a large display like that. The other best use would be widgets, and iOS doesn't really have them. the Today view has potential if it's opened up to 3rd party app use

iOS 7 is currently a BETA.

You can't make ANY conclusion about its battery life. Early betas typically have very bad battery life, because of bugs and debug code that was not removed.

OH THEY'RE IN BETA? I DIDN'T REALIZE THAT! HOLY COW!

This is a very graphics intensive OS, and it's going to drain more than OS 6. I'm not saying it won't get better, but even when it's all said and done, it will drain more than 6. Especially with background app refreshing.

----------

iOS 7? You mean the BETA OS that Apple released 3 days ago to DEVELOPERS for bug testing and development?

Are you brain dead?

I'll just group you in with the other response.

WTF. iOS 7 is under NDA. If you tell us anything about iOS 7, then you are either a developer in breach of NDA, or some wannabe who found a pirated copy of iOS 7, or just lying. Feel free to tell us which.

No matter what you are, you probably haven't bothered to look at the changes in Xcode 5, have you?

MAN you guys are butt hurt about that statement.

How do you know that iOS 7 power management improvements won't compensate for these new features? No, you don't know.

I'm experiencing abnormal battery drain on my 4S running iOS 7 Beta 1, but that happens even when the phone is locked and background app refreshing is off.

There is obviously some bug somewhere responsible for this, and that will be fixed without a doubt. There's no way for now to know what will be the real-world battery life of the GM release.

I'm speculating. It's not a statement of fact. But even under iOS 6, the iPhone 5's battery life is pretty terrible compared to its competitors. Larger phone housing a larger battery makes a lot of sense.

I saw the power management improvements of OS X. I didn't see anything mentioned about that for iOS 7. Am I missing something?

4" IP5 is just weird. 3,5" perfect size for a small portable device.
Those who want larger screens actually want small portable computers. It's a marketing thing anyway... phone, tablet, ultrabook, less and less difference every year.

Here's what I'd do:

iPhone nano 3,5"
iPhone mini 4"
iPhone 4.5"

iPad nano ~6" (with phone option)
iPad mini ~8"
iPad ~10"
iPad pro ~12" (MBA11 without keyboard with iOS/OSX mix)

Maybe too many products for Apple's taste, but that's what they have/had in iPod and Mac - mature product lines.

Where have you been? :D

I've been here at Macrumors for a few years at least but do not recall Apple claiming the iPhone size to be "perfect" like you've stated. Do you have an actual quote from an Apple executive/PR that states the current (iPhone) size is "perfect"? Since you've said it's "long standing", so there must be multiple instances of such proclamation over the years too?

I can see Apple having a larger version of the iPhone at maybe 4.7" or 4.8" but anything larger than that would be just too big.

As thin and light as it is, every time I pick up a Galaxy S4 I feel it is just a bit too big for everyday needs, something I don't feel with HTC One or Galaxy S3. And I am talking about actual screen size not the overall size of the device.

Cheaper iPhones? Lolnope. That's the worst idea since they tried to make new Trix cereal flavors.

The only thing, and I mean ONLY thing i'd even consider getting one would be because of the colors.

Apple should consider buyers choice with this. 3.0, 3.5, 4.0 4.5, 4.7, 5.0 and 5.7, would be perfect screen choices for people.

You must be wearing skinny jeans :-/

If you actually knew what you were talking about you'd know the note 2 fits great in any real mans pockets.

I do know what I'm talking about, and no I don't wear skinny jeans.

I tried a friends S4 in my pocket, and for me it wasn't comfortable in my pocket, especially when sitting down.

If it doesn't fit in a shirt pocket it's not a cellphone. That was way back in the day.

It can still be big, like the Galaxy Note I, at least.
