But what about the version numbers?? So the today we would have iOS 4 (iPhone, etc...) and iOS 6 (Snow Leopard). Isn't that vey confusing? The two OSes can't be in synchrony unless Apple abandons OS X and puts the same iOS onto Macs that they have on iPhones. The update cycle for desktop OSes can't be the same as for portable devices.

Maybe you missed this part of my post?

...

And even if Apple were to kill off the iPod OS that is COMPLETELY unrelated to what will happen to the Mac OS. I'm sure you cried when Apple changed the name from System 7 to Mac OS 8 claiming the doom of Apple's computers.

What? That you've been insulting me trying to say that iOS is based on OS X, or that you are so blinded by Apple that you're oblivious to where the company is obviously headed?

Apple's desktop OS is about to fundamentally change, it's target market is shifting, and its devices are going to become increasingly portable and mobile market focused. There's not so much money to be made in selling high-end Mac Pros and XServes to small markets, and laptops are already outselling iMacs. Apple would be foolish not to consolidate its business operations (including its OS variations) and brand as much as possible: it's a company, it exists to make money not to make people happy.

This conversation is over. Feel free to post something snarky to get the last word in.

Small matter - look at how Adobe consolidated the Creative Suite. Each application has its own version number, but we're no longer using Photoshop 12, Illustrator 11, InDesign 9, etc. We're using "Creative Suite 4" or "Creative Suite 5" - and the CS moniker carries over to the application nowadays as well: It's Photoshop CS5, and not Photoshop with an arbitrary number.

Everything will carry the iOS moniker, and Apple will find a different way to make sure version-appropriate application information is indicated. Someone earlier suggested iOS mobile, iOS desktop, iOS server with some sort of numbering scheme - that's one of probably a dozen variations they could do.

I don't fear Apple killing their desktop OS yet, but I do like the name OS X more than iOS. In fact I think iOS sounds really stupid. The i stands for nothing and OS means operating system. Aren't there rules against having a meaningless letter in an acronym?

I bought my first Apple computer in April, have been a long time Windows user and I just could put up with their crap, Apple has their own crap that I'm not happy with, but if Apple tries to limit my use of the desktop/laptop computer effectively turn it into a bigger heavier iPad, I'll switch back to Windows so fast, and never look back of Apple or their offerings again. I'm giving Apple a chance to show me Why I should permanently move to mac instead of PC's and so far while the computer is nice it's lacking feature I see in PC's like Blu-ray. if Apple forces me to how to get all my apps from the itunes store for my mac, I'll be absolute PC, I don't want my action on the computer controlled by 'almighty steve'...

I predict Tim Cook will be gone by the end of the year. Steve has gone over the cliff.:apple:

Agreed. Apple was doing great with Tim Cook at the helm. Apple's products used to be "Insanely Great" now their leader is the only thing insane. Is Steve trying for a repeat of 1985?

I'm the one that's blind? HAHAHAHAHA

So what do you think about that name change from iBook to MacBook? Did that radically affect you? No? Didn't think so.

I don't need to say anything because it's already been said:

What the article title said: Next MacBooks to have "glass trackpads"

What everyone heard: Next MacBooks to have touchscreens in the palmrest

What the article title said: Randy Ubilos back in charge of FCP, possible GUI changes

What everyone heard: FCP to become iMovie 08

What the article title said: Apple might change OS X's name to "iOS", like they recently did for iPhone OS

What everyone heard: Apple replacing Mac OS X with iPhone OS, leaving PC/workstation business.

What will you crazy people come up with next?
Good day sir. ;)

From a marketing perspective, I think it is a sound idea. Certainly doesn't matter to me if that becomes the brand for desktop and mobile. Apple can still certainly screw it up, but the concept itself is sound to me.

don't hate me, but ...

iPod shuffle
iPod nano
iPod
iPod touch
iPhone
iPad
iMacBook
iMacBook Air
iMacBook Pro
iMac mini
iMac
iMac Pro
iMac Serve

there, I fixed it ... quite literally.

Guys, download the D8 podcast, the one with iCon talking to Walt, he basically admits that computing is changing and hints at the end of all fully fledged personal computers including laptops, well he more than hints! He goes on to talk about it being a painful transition for old fashioned industry guys. There is no long term future for Mac OSX as you know it now.

I don't really care what it is called, but once they announce a new desktop OS version with a highly-restricted subset of APIs and no access to the underlying filesystem or hardware (with a pay-per-use 'cloud' model), I will end up moving to Linux or FreeBSD.

Perhaps someday in our dystopian world to come, real computers and operating systems (in which the user can do whatever he/she wishes with the machine) will be considered contraband, with DRM-locked black-boxes becoming the only thing approved by the corporate IP police (such as the RIAA, MPAA and all the other ass-clowns out there).

No. He said full-fledged computers will be like trucks. They will still be there for people who need them.

That's good but Apple should just buy Sony and take their name. They seem hell bent on becoming Sony. The Sony iPad. The Sony iMac. Has a nice ring to it.

From the iMac's original introduction keynote, the five words originally cited by Steve Jobs which the Apple "i" stands for:

- internet
- individual
- instruct
- inform
- inspire
Meaningless?

The thing is, it would have to change anyway. OSX = OS 10. For them to move on instead of using Roman Numerals they can change it altogether to something more generic, that is universal across the board.

Sounds like a legit idea to me.
