Horrible analogy.

No it's not. It's just one you don't like.

Exxon sells gas. AppleScruff likes to use gas from Exxon. Applescruff likes that Exxon makes a huge profit more than others because that means they will remain in business so he can buy the gas he loves most.

Nothing wrong with the analogy. Substitute Exxon for Apple. Gas for iPhones.

Analogy is spot on.

It doesn't matter if I believe him or not. That's not the debate. The question is whether or not the analogy is valid or "horrible."

I say the analogy works - whether I agree or not with the sentiment.

It's funny how Apple fanatics get excited about Apple raking in profits(ie their money).

As to how it affects the perceptions though keep in mind that from what we've been hearing Apple gets a larger percentage from the carriers than other mobile phone manufacturers. Kudos to them for being able to do this but it would be interesting to see that if Apple only received the same profits as their competitors where they might stand in a similar comparison.

Well I don't know what you stands for, nor I care. I only care that iPhone works simple, well and exquisitely organized.

Now I don't mind to move to Android if they can build a great ecosystem as Apple do.

Wait .. they can't, right? Now with those fragmented platform, acting like a whore by claiming itself as open platform OS, aka Android can be screwed easily by anyone, any brand. You respect that kind of .. you know .. biatch?

Me: "Uuuh .. I want Ice Cream Sandwich Android on my Galaxy S, how do I update it"
Samsung: "I'm sorry, but we don't provide ICS for Galaxy S, you can upgrade your handset to Galaxy S2 for that."
Me: "Uuuh .. what the eff? I just buy this phone last year and I thought this phone runs ANDROID? You don't provide update for ANDROID handset?"
Samsung: "I'm sorry but yes we don't "

While a nice old 3GS can enjoy iOS 5 for FREE, yes with some features disabled, but at least we can still enjoy the LATEST UPGRADE FOR FREE!!

Now about money .. yes we gave our money from Apple, as you give your money to any Android smartphone manufacturer out there. Apple is no saint company, but you don't really think Apple is the only evil here, right?

Apple is not listed among Corning customers who use Gorilla glass. So there is no evidence that iPhone has Gorilla glass. Quite opposite: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=elKxgsrJFhw#t=88sevidence.

iPhone 4~ uses aluminosilicate glass. "Gorilla Glass" is Corning's trademark for their aluminosilicate glass. How different are the two? I'd wager not very much if any at all (i.e. Corning deals to Apple's from the alley as some have speculated.) But I agree; there is no evidence the iPhone uses it indeed.

But the video definitely does not prove any difference between the glass used in each handset with any certainty for a few reasons. The iPhone has two sides/more surface glass so it really should have a better chance of breaking out of the gate. There isn't really much to the iPhone besides glass, the antenna band and its guts. All I'd need is a once-over to put my money on the SGS2 for overall durability winner. In reality any well placed/lucky pebble could destroy the glass on either of those phones in a single drop. My GF had her SGS2 screen smash falling out of a car. That's a 1/3 of a meter drop - first try, buttered-side-down. I'll file that along with the video as examples of cherry-picked results with a prohibitively small sample size and lack of proper controls.

No, the analogy was absolutely ridiculous to start with. The only reason why you are backing up Applepuffer is, because he responded to LTD. :p

Seriously, you are comparing a petroleum company which produces goods which are essential for life and the economy as a whole to a company which produces (luxury) electronic gadgets? LOL. But hey, as long as it fits your agenda here on MacRumors.

I don't have an agenda. And the question again isn't whether or not the analogy is one you care for. It's a SOUND analogy.

But it's clear what your agenda is - or at least your maturity - since you resort to name calling.

A SOUND analogy? Really?

Why not being honest? If LTD had made this jewel of a comparison, then you would be first in line to bash him. ;)

No - I wouldn't because the analogy is sound. I would be more likely to not post at all than to make the mistake of calling someone out on an analogy that works just because I didn't care for the poster.

But keep beating a dead horse.

The analogy works. Simply put, only on a apple forum would be be PROUD that apple is taking in more profits than another competitor.

You dont cheer on Exxon when they make record profits? You dont cheer BMW when they take more profits than any other car maker?

Do you cheer Starbuck's when they report making more money on coffee than Seattle's best?

When Microsoft makes record profits, do people on windows forums say "yay microsoft is profit leader."

I can go on and on AND ON. Point being cheering profits, from a non-shareholder position is simply stupid, ESPECIALLY since what apple offers in there Laptop, desktop, and mobile phone components is no better than the competition. Heck the competition MAKES SOME OF THEIR INTERNALS.

I am glad that you understood my point, most didn't. As a consumer I can't comprehend why anyone would be glad that a company was making a huge profit off of everything I bought from them. It's not rational at all unless you are a shareholder.

To further - you don't see ANYONE cheering ATT, Verizon, Sprint, etc here in the states for making huge profits. Especially - for example - on text messaging plans. Hmmmmmmm

Odd, isn't it? And I wonder how many knew that Apple also got $10 month from AT&T for every iPhone customer? But they complain about the data fees. It's in the Wired Magazine Steve Jobs e-book.

As I wrote earlier in this thread, I accept that Apple has a good enough products to get a premium for it. I buy it, so I can't complain.

But only a fool would celebrate their ability to earn record profits if they weren't an employee or a shareholder.

While I'm a fan of their products...I'm a consumer first.

Oh,so unlike you with LTD then. My bad, I must have mistaken you with someone else then. Because I started to have the impression that you are almost elbowing your way forward to reply to almost everything LTD posts.

Really? Hmmm, I liked your posting over in the Motorola thread.

Go Moto!!

A very rational post, indeed. Are you at Motorola shareholder?

Is there a reason why you're trying to bait people? Especially since now you're not even adding anything of value to this thread except to be contrary for contrary sake.

Sorry for the late response, I was in time out LOL.

The overpriced argument will always be silly. If people are buying the phone, it's not overpriced. There's no manual that says this is what a smartphone should cost, nor are there other phones out there that are on par with the iPhone that are priced hundreds of dollars less at release. I'm not sure I understand why there are people getting so up in arms about Apple making a profit. They created a product, priced it competitively with every other similar product out there, and make profits because people buy their products far more then any other product in history.

what exactly are you people upset about? do you feel like you're getting ripped off? those who are so upset about this claim that you don't own android devices (although thats not believable), so you're willingly allowing yourselves to get ripped off by a company and then whining about it later? seems bizarre behavior (but no less odd then signing up for an Apple-centric website to bash its users, I guess).

As already mentioned, show me the phone that has the same or better specs then the iPhone that is cheaper when it comes out. Other phones drop to 1 cent in price in 1 month because no one is buying them, not because the OEMs have a board meeting and say "let's reward our customers!" lol...it's funny how some people know so very little about how business works.

and finally the uninformed gas analogy. A gas company which provides an almost essential product to anyone that drives a car is seriously being compared to a company that provides a product that simply does NOT have to be purchased if you disagree with its price? And somehow this silly analogy is being touted as "sound"?? LOL...that's just foolishness on so many levels. Again...if you want a smartphone you have the option not to buy an iPhone, if you want a tablet you have the option not to buy an iPad. If you want to drive a car, you have to buy gas. Apple cannot force you to buy their products. You're buying a product voluntarily, knowing full well what its price is and then getting mad because the company made money off you?? WTH? How? Why? This is just as dumb as people saying they're being ripped off by their carrier, but won't leave because "They force me to pay an ETF!" as they pay $1200/year to the company that's ripping them off...You guys should start your own businesses, and let me know what they're called. It'll be great watching you faceplant. Thankfully it's only a couple of people who are calling this frankly funny analogy "sound", there is hope for the human race yet.

Some people just like whining about things, I guess.

Bravo, you contradicted yourself in two sentences. You accept that their product justifies the prices, but then you're upset that they're getting a profit. What kind of person would concede that a company makes products that deserve a premium price, voluntarily contribute to that company's record profits and then end up upset about it...

You called those who celebrate the profit "fools"...seems a little pot meets kettle, no?

Manufacturers don't lower the price of their phones. Retail outlets and carriers do.

So the .01 or buy one get one free, or free phones bullet point is erroneous at best. A flat out lie (if you are knowingly perpetuating the FUD) at worst.

The analogy is quite sound, you just don't like it because it makes cheering about Apple's profits look silly. I heard about your blog, so I understand what you mean about whining.

You've missed the point, much like you always seem to do. At some point it becomes obvious that you're not actually missing the point, but simply ignoring it because you know it's right. It doesn't matter if it's the OEMs, the carriers, or my mom who's lowering the price of the phone, my point (which you ignored and couldn't counter with anything other then a strawman) was that these phones lower in price because they don't sell. Nothing more, nothing less. The iPhone retains it's price and doesn't need to be sold BOGO because people (including yourself by your own admission) are willing to pay for it. So to ignore the point on purpose because you know it's right is hilarious at best, and childish at worst. When you're ready to discuss the actual points I discussed, I'm willing to listen.

The analogy is quite sound, you just don't like it because it makes cheering about Apple's profits look silly. I heard about your blog, so I understand what you mean about whining.

Well of course you think the analogy is sound, you came up with the silly thing . Like I said, thankfully you are one of the few (see 2 people) who think it is. There is hope for the human race yet. If your analogy is sound then you, by necessity, are implying:

1) You had no choice but to buy the iPhone (much like you have to buy gas)
2) The iPhone is an essential product if you want a smartphone (much like gas is if you want to drive)
3) You knew the price of the iPhone before and after purchase (much like you do with gas)
4) You bought it anyway (like you do at the pump)
5) You aren't happy with the success of Apple, because they are clearly forcing you to buy their product if you want a smartphone (much like gas companies force you to buy gas if you want to drive)

If the above 5 things are true, then yes...your analogy is sound. If the above 5 things are true, then you are also a pretty funny guy (but not on purpose of course, it's one of those "at you, not with you" things). :D
