No one is going to have a system to handle this massive load of people, not for just 1 or 2 days a year.

Apple just doesn't learn though.

1. Don't release EVERYTHING on one day. They should have released 10.7.2 several days BEFORE IOS5.
2. Maybe don't open IOS5 to EVERYONE. AT&T customers day 1, day 2 add Verizon, etc. and stagger world wide.

However, IOS5 solves some of this. We won't have to go through iTunes anymore to update now, which is nice. I don't get their set up.

So you have the IOS package downloaded, all it needs to do is install, but it isn't allowed to install unless it connects to the server for permission? Yet, iTunes knows we've had these devices. That should only have ever been for new activations, and it was a foolish way to implement updates from the first iPhone on. iTunes tells you the update is available.... so it already knows... why does it need that last step connection to a server? Just stupid.

Im having trouble with email as well

I can receive mail on all my devices, but I can't send anything out. I keep getting an authentication problem with iClouds outgoing mail server. I know it sounds like I'm just typing in my password wrong, but I'm positive it's correct. iCloud just isn't accepting it for whatever reason. I have a tech support call set up with Apple later, I'm sure they'll help me square everything away.

On a different note
I want to let you all know that I'm trying to organize an Honoring Steve event at BJ's Brewhouse and Pizza Bar in Cupertino Ca. It's in the parking lot to Apple HQ.
The basic idea is we all get together and honor the life of Steve with drinks and Apple talk (not the old networking protocol. HA!) .
I'm not expecting black suites or quite somber discussions on life. I want laugher, gadget and gizmo chat, conversation of great apple moments, and overall raising the geek level in Silicon Valley (that in itself is a tall order)

It's going to be on October 19th from 11am-Midnight.

https://www.facebook.com/HonoringSteve

Please join if you can, I would like for this to be something noteworthy.
Let's create something great.

I'm also having an issue with my iMessage and FaceTime. I can't tie it to my apple ID because it keeps saying my email can't be verified because it's already in use. Migrated from MobileMe and also experiencing the mac mail issues.

I like many had difficulty getting everything setup yesterday, but I did get it done.

1. Downloads = slow but tolerable. (10.7.2, iOS 5)

2. Updating to iOS 5.0 took 20-30 tries over an hour or two until the Apple activation servers allowed the update to occur. Later attempts on my iPad and another iPhone took 1-2 tries each.

3. MobileMe wouldn't covert to iCloud for about 2 hours and then went through.

Not the greatest, but here is the IMPORTANT part... once I had iOS 5 and iCloud running the sync and use has been PERFECT. I dare say the calendar/contact/photostream sync is even faster than MobileMe and you know they were getting crushed yesterday so I think this might just work!

Very pleased now that it is working and I bet the "average" Apple consumer who gets around to updating in the next few days to weeks will have no difficulty with any of it.

Heheh I was thinking the same yesterday when everything was taking so long to download. Yesterday was a crazy day, with all kinds of updates for everything, including Apps for both OS X and iOS from Apple and third-parties.

It certainly was too much for one day; well it's not even a day yet. The flood started at 1:00PM EST yesterday. It has gotten better, but I'm sure there's a lot of pissed off IT people out there.

Can't get into my iCloud email on iOS or via web. iOS claims password issues, web client says that it'c locked because of something having to do with an account update.

MobileMe has been WORKING PERFECTLY for me for a very long time and I am a heavy user... iCal and Address Book sync were perfect... After such a struggle we all went thru - "It Just Worked" - For me anyway...

I am going to sorely miss MM and all of it's functionality like: Galleries (the best of it's kind there is IMHO), iDisk was no dropbox but could have been improved... and it saved all doc types...

The part I don't get...

Syncing dock items, keychains, prefs, Mail accounts and signatures, widgets and notes - makes it easy to own multiple apple gadgets - doesn't it???

Why remove these?

I simply followed someone's advice here and since it had download an backed up, but failed on the server thing, I just did an iPhone restore. A few minutes later I had iOS5. Then it started restoring my music and apps while the phone was useable. But this mail thing is just crap. Really screwing up the work day where I rely on it. Maybe need to rethink that. Of course I have google mail if I needed it I guess.

Nothing's perfect. If a tree fell on the cable line outside there's no telling how long things would be out. TV, internet, phone, yikes.

It all depends on your location, the number of peering points before reaching Apple's data backbone. Peering-points are mainly private network connections that must allow free traffic to flow in order to remain connected to the internet, but can limit the bandwidth (of free traffic) if desired, specially when it affects their paying customers.

I'm here in the U.S. connecting through Comcast. Not sure if related, but I had 5 brief (couple minutes) outages within the last 24 hours, but overall traffic remained good.

I have to listen to that last keynote Steve did that joked about Mobile Me in comparison to iCloud. If I remember correctly, MobileMe's launch was spotty when they tried to roll out too much at once just like yesterday.

.mac?

I love how half the stuff and settings still has the MobileMe label or even the .mac label! Go to reminders on your phone and you can either make reminders just on your phone, or if you go to the next page, you can make ".mac" reminders. WTH? The only other place it shows in on the calendar in reminders. I guess we had those with .mac, but they were goofy email and calendar things.

As most devs already knew... this was a train wreck waiting to happen

I've been discussing this upcoming rollout at work with a colleague for a week or so and basically concluded it was a train wreck waiting to happen. It's been as buggy as hell - iOS5 and iCloud - in dev and I saw no sign that Apple were going to be able to cope with millions of people hitting their servers all at the same time when the masses came onboard. My non-dev colleague assured me that because Apple has a lot riding on this mega software release - to entice people to upgrade - and have had plenty of time to crush the bugs, so it would be an OK rollout in as far as these things ever can be. Didn't happen. Who is responsible for managing this mess?

I have everything up and running but I'm getting rather bored with the incessant password error messages in mail and the fact that when i get an email to my me.com account I get it three times - one to the icloud account, and one to a duplicate mobileme account in my accounts list. I guess I could try deleting the rogue mobileme account so at least I only get two identical messages instead of three, but I'm a bit scared to do that. On the iPad I don't have this problem - mobileme emails just go into the iCloud account.

Fingers crossed these are just launch teething problems combined with load balancing issues and nothing more serious.

My only frustration would be the desire to merge my .Mac account (from which my apps and music are purchased) with my former MobileMe account (which I use for email, contacts and calendars). Until then, I'm living in two different worlds. Not ideal.

This is easy, very very easy - I don't understand why people are having an issue with this.

Convert your MobileMe to iCloud - enter your iCloud details into your device. Then just put your iTunes account in under the app store and any homesharing sections. Done - you never need to think what address or account is entered for either again, it all just works.

MobileMe e-mail down for me as well, no biggie though Ive never used it anyway. I have Google push exchange accounts setup with my own .com domains.

I am wondering if the me.com alias I made carried over as my default me.com user name is terrible as Ive had to stick "2" at the end of my name as they wouldn't let me register my name properly after I let the initial MobileMe free trial expire...

My Mail won't work in iCloud, and I know why

My upgrades were fast and trouble-free for both Lion 10.7.2 and IOS5. I then did the iCloud port, with just one problem: it carried over my @mac.com email address as @me.com, which fails to match my mail password. There is no place in iCloud to change the settings that the port process assigns to you. System Preferences does gives me some settings, but the @me.com mailing address is cemented in there and cannot be changed. I get popups every few minutes telling me that my password is invalid on the mail server. Of course it is, because my address should be @mac.com .

i changed my apple id email adress and the system prefs of iCloud still show my old one and when i send an name i still get the name "Justin Timberlake" (it used to be my fake US account) :D i dont want other people to see me as Justin Timberlake in their mails

i also get all of my events on iCal 3 times now!

its all a mess

People, don't sync your email with iCloud.

I don't see a need for it when you have an account that keep messages on the server (such as .Me or Gmail).

And of course, the first sync always takes the longest.

They forgot to register some SMTP servers in the DNS!!!! My client is trying to connect to p06-smtp.mail.me.com but a nslookup reveals that there is no such server on the Net... only p01, p02, p3 an p04 ....

I found that creating a second SMTP server to one of those 4 servers is a possible workaround.

All of my iCal events have been duplicated, I deleted the duplicated ones and then iCloud deleted the originals! I've now got to re-key them all... :(

This just feels like Mobile Me part 2 - no mail al day, calendars broken... perhaps it's my own fault for being an early adopter but did nobody test this? I know you can't really test for the extraordinary server loads experienced but duplicate iCal events? How did that not appear in testing.

Okay, rant over, feel free to down-vote me.

Ever since upgrading our iPhone 4 to iOS 5, we've had tremendous LAGS and DELAYS when typing text, such as typing the text in this comment field right now. These delays are ESPECIALLY NOTICEABLE in Mail, where it sometimes takes 10 SECONDS for Mail to process what we're typing. This is tremendously annoying, and makes our iPhone 4 completely unusable!! Why did you do this to us, Apple?

Why do you think that the system wouldn't be overloaded when millions of people are all trying to do the same thing at the same time over the internet? Those with half a clue won't switch over for at least a week.

MobileMe to iCloud Issue

After transition it appears my account keeps on popping up alert notifying I have input incorrect username and password but before that I don't even have this problem :eek::mad:

I get popups every few minutes telling me that my password is invalid on the mail server. Of course it is, because my address should be @mac.com .

Thats not the reason though, EVERYONE is getting that error at the moment regardless of @mac.com or @me.com addresses originally.

Same here

Well, I upgraded to iCloud and all seemed well. I even got a welcome email into my MobileMe email account ...

... and then, once my email account in Mail had been converted, my password continues to be rejected. No such problems with my Android phone, though, which is happily signalling each newly received iCloud/MobileMe/.Mac email. How odd! :)

My mail shows up on my iPhone, iPad & iCloud on the web, but my iCloud account in Mail keeps rejecting my password. I have half a notion to just delete it!

:)
