Try recalibrating your battery first and then see if there's any improvement after 5.01.

I'm quite liking the SJ post era - not to say the SJ rein was bad, because it wasn't, it was good, of course. But, SJ would have just said "There's no battery issue".. and Apple would have been digging itself out of a hole by now.

In short: Apple communication has improved.

My 4s is losing about 5 percent an hour on standby. Is this normal?

Depends: What services do you have running? i.e., location service will kill your battery. What is your cell reception like?

I think 5.0.1 improved my 4s

After 1 hour 50 minutes usage and 5 hours 46 minutes standby, I'm showing 80% battery. That seems better than before. Not phenomenal, but better.

I would recommend two things:

1) Go to Settings -> General -> Date & Time -> Set Automatically = OFF

2) Disable WiFi when not using it to avoid constant discovery and attempts to connect to every single WiFi AP it detects.

I did notice a good improvement in performance on my iPad 1 when upgrading from 5.0 to 5.0.1.

Also, iTunes synchronization seems more stable.

This has fixed multiple people

It appears to be something related to email accounts, it tries to get mail over and over. remove all mail accounts, clear all alerts in notification area and re-input the email accounts

I'm fairly convinced my continued battery drain in 5.0.1 is still partially from Settings > Location Services > System Services > Setting Time Zone.

Frequently, I see the GPS icon on my phone despite my not using any location-aware apps (and no location-aware reminders, etc). I go in to see what's using it, and it's this system service. What's strange is that even when I go into airplane mode it sometimes stays on. When I turn off the Setting Time Zone permission, the icon goes away, but comes back instantly when I re-enable it.

Strangely, my time zone is set correctly and automatically to Pacific Time in mere seconds, so I'm not sure why it needs to keep the icon on. I've seen it on as long as 20 minutes.

True. Pulling email very often specially when using Pop email would cause your device to waste battery.

Using email accounts that support Push notification (ex: Exchange, Gmail, etc.) is much more efficient.

I've found that mine has been getting better all week, I'm wondering if there's tweak on apple's servers as well as the update. I have Bluetooth and Ping switched off and that's it.

That is what it's supposed to lose. At that rate, you'd get at least 10 hours of battery life when it's being used, and even more if it's on standby.

actually read the post you're quoting....he says he's losing 10% per hour IN STANDBY. That means he can just barely make it through a standard work day + commute WITHOUT EVEN USING THE PHONE. That is completely. unacceptable.

I like the slightly more disclosive apple.

Agreed. They come across more responsive this way. I'm guessing that after the antenna issues last year, they didn't want the battery issue spiraling out of control and are using these releases to better manage expectations.

My battery was fine on iOS 5
Then I got 5.0.1 beta 1 and it got worse.
Now I am on beta 2. I haven't received the OTA download.
iPhone 4S.

If you are on the beta, you may need to update manually by plugging into iTunes.

Recall?

I am really enjoying my iPhone 4S :) (my first iPhone), and don't seem to be experiencing "unusual" battery drain (avg. between 3-6 hours use each day, and plenty of standby time available), but I sure think that these things should be getting at least 8 hrs. of battery life for moderate to heavy use.

That being said, if this battery drain issue continues to grow and grow, would we see a recall? I'd like to know the data on the amount of 4S returns for replacement units.

I doubt however that Apple would ever issue a recall.

this is apple without steve!!!

Sad, I was thinking the same thing.. But Apple with Steve was antennagate.. and iPhone 3G's with cracking backs.. These things will always happen.. but are just high profile because it is Apple.. My HTC Thunderbolt still drains like a mofo.. but there is no press cause no one gives a ****..

I'm totally ready to buy an iPhone 4s, but these issue are making me wait.

Is there still a way to disable cell data? I'd get the cheapest package possible to save $$$ and it wouldn't be much data to throw around! (300 MB on verizon).

I would go with AT&T, but that $20 texting plan is ridiculous.

x2. I noticed that my phone was going berserk the other day trying to check my office Exchange, and 2 personal e-mail accounts. It dropped from 99% to 89% in about an hour. I reset my network settings, deleted and re-set the e-mail accounts and it has been OK. Perhaps the fix for that is in store for 5.0.2.

Yes, you can disable data.

my iphone 4 battery still gets drunk fast by the iphone, even with 5.0.1

so.... my bet is that the cloud backup does something to take the battery life like there is no tomorrow.

only way i can use it is my big fat Mophie Battery Iphone 4 case.

WTF... If you loose 5-10% per hour in standby then it's far cry from 200 hour standby it should be getting. Do the math, standby of 10-20 hours is piss poor performance.

question to those people with battery issues:

- do you use iCloud?
- is your iCloud appleID a former MobileMe account?

if so, please check on appleid.apple.com wether your (@me) email address is verified.

don`t know if this is related to the problem ... but sometimes ...

(i got those battery issues and i am not able to verify my @me mail address for the appleID with the same mail address)

I really really doubt you get 200 hours even with airplane mode and everything turned off. :D:apple:

How do you know it was trying to check your email all the time? Also what network setting did you reset?

You can disable cell data in Settings. Go to "General" > "Network" and the first option is "Cellular Data". Just turn it off and you won't use cell for data at all. Just WiFi.

On the battery issue - it seems real, but I think the majority of us aren't having an issue.

My iPhone 4s gets charged once every 2 days or so. I use it frequently (4-6 hours of use) and fairly heavily (upload HD movie to Facebook using 3G, play games, write with bluetooth keyboard while playing music, etc.)

Everything is turned on except for "Location Services -> Timezone". (Technically, I live hours away from the nearest timezone change, and we don't do Daylight Savings Time or anything like that.)

I didn't have the problem under the original iOS 5.0, and the 5.0.1 update doesn't seem to have made any difference (positive or negative) that I can tell.

My 4S is working better. I set a location based reminder at 6:30 AM and it has been on all day. It is now 4:09 PM and my battery is at 75%. Admittedly, I have not used the iPhone as much as I normally do today but 25% in 10 hours is not bad.
