Very poor by apple. I can't handle this battery life and ios5 has been out long enough for them to have pulled all the stops and had it fixed by now. I can't wait another 2 weeks for another beta and then release which probably won't fix the issue again.

Just not good enough for a premium product.

My 4S' battery life is slightly worse with the update. :/ I wonder if there's an issue with the HSPA+ standard somehow draining battery life? If it isn't something wrong with the software itself...

Yeah, I'm kinda annoyed not just with Apple's slowness, but this tech-industry-wide backsliding in deemed acceptability. First, on my early 2011 MacBook Pro, there came choppy graphics due to beta-level drivers and a weak Lion build.

Apple is obviously not the only company doing this, but I'd love to see hard and software makers actually ironing out their products before release, and not using their customers as beta-testers.

But hey, this is capitalism, so it all ends up being our fault as consumers for buying these devices when we know damn well this will be the case :)

That's what I did and they wanted me to accept a warranty replacement. F..k that. I wanted a new phone in a new box with matching serial numbers. So I called 800myapple and requested a return lable. They recieved it with in a day.

Could be related to the whole raise-to-speak feature, what with the accelerometer and infra-red seemingly always on.

The infrared sensor is only on when the screen is lit. It isn't on the whole time.

If you don't believe me, you can actually check it yourself if you have an older digital camera or camcorder. The sensor light is visible to older cameras without ir filters. On the view screen of my Sony Cybershot, the ir sensor (above the ear piece) flickers a faint blue/purple color, but only when the screen is on.

One or more of the tear down videos had some pretty clear shots of it turning on only when the screen is actually on.

So, I don't think this is causing a battery issue.

darn android and all its bugs... Oh wait

guess "just works" only applies to OSX and macs as always... Oh well, the iOS user base is like the PC people (don't know any better anyway) just another example of the dumbing down of apple by iOS

Yes, because the Android I traded in for the 4S actually got good battery life! Ha! Not a chance. I had to have that POS plugged in all day at the office or it would die before I could leave work. The 4S with iOS 5 has yet to get below 30% with heavy use and most days I walk out of here with 65% or more and that is in a terrible coverage area for Sprint. Go back to your cave, troll.

I am not experiencing any battery life issues with my 4S. If I leave it on Standby it sucks hardly anything. Overnight on WiFi I will wake up with 98 or 99%.

the fact that this update did nothing for some users leads me back to my original concern: its a hardware issue, either bad batteries or something else.

Unplugged my iPhone 4S around 5 a.m. this morning, it's not close to 5 p.m. and it's sitting there at 95%. Dunno what everyone is complaining about.

Though it seems the proximity sensor just gave out on mine. "Raise to speak" with Siri doesn't work and the screen stays on when I bring the phone to my face. :(

Aha!

And that's why i retuned my iPhone 4S. I love Apple and I've been a customer for decades, but I don't think they'll ever get to fix it 100%. Just like the "fix" for the proximity sensor in the iPhone 4. If you're within your 30 days of purchasing your iPhone 4S, and you didn't see any difference with the update, then you should return it and purchase a new one. You can always return it again every 29 days...

The problem is how would it be hardware if it only affects some users? Yes there will be hardware issues, but there's so many variables in terms of use and even the recent Anandtech review shows that some activities drain the battery more than others. Also, we have people watching their phones like a hawk now, which also can't help.

Anyone who has the 3Gs will remember the battery issues then and they were fixed by software. Mine is running at 5 hrs 24 mins usage with 12 hrs, 2 mins standby at 33% after the update. That's with 20 mins calls, push email, all loc settings enabled as well. It's a vast improvement even though I only had a drain (not as severe as currently reported) at the start of the week and have had the 4s since the 14th October.

Are we even looking at who's getting the drain on GSM and CDMA, which could be one variable?

More like they are waiting for the Devs to put out the Unteathered Jailbreak

They now how to "Fix" it.

As much as this sounds a little like a conspiracy theory, it doesn't actually seem so far fetched. I guess we'll really know once the jailbreak is completed.

Hmm.. this would be a terrible thing for Apple to have to do a recall or something along that line, but if this is the case, I sure as hell would like a new phone!

- I'm not complaining, just frustrated because my EVO 4G rooted could easily get between 12-14 hours of use with no problem. Hope we see a fix soon!

Fix it!

My 4S is not better with 5.01. Just not as bad as 5 with icloud on. I loose 5-10% an hour in standby.

That is what it's supposed to lose. At that rate, you'd get at least 10 hours of battery life when it's being used, and even more if it's on standby.

I wish I had 10 hrs :( I am lucky to get 7 after a full charge over night take it off down to 80% in one hr.

I have an iPhone 4 and since 5.0.1 I've got a huge improvement in my battery, and I mean HUGE!

53%
Usage 7hrs, 24mins
Standby 1 Day, 0 Hours

And that is with Twitter and Mail updates being pushed to me and a good hour and a half of phone call...

Thats insane I wish I got that.

So the 3gs still the less worst option, 4 with antenna issue, 4s with battery problems.
Bad engineering, bad engineering apple.

No, you are sadly ignorant.

I upgraded from a 3GS and the 4S is spectacular.
Most people did not experience battery problems with IOS 5/4S. It's just that it is very annoying for people who do, so you hear a lot from them. Anyway, it sounds like 5.0.1 fixes the issue for some at least.

I was not planning on upgrading until I broke my 3GS... but now that I have I can't imagine going back. Everythign is better: better battery life, much faster, screen is superb, cell reception is much better, Siri is cool, looks nicer, etc.

Proof in the pudding

My mother-in-law requires help for anything on her iPhone...and this caused me to see something amazing related to battery issue. I held her phone, it had 10% battery. I closed all multi-tasking apps, pushed settings, and was going to log her into the wireless network I had set up in her home. The screen immediately shut off as if it had just fallen to the magic 2% mark. Usually when this happens, a plug-in of the device nets a 5-6 minute wait for return to functionality. I puched the power key only to get the "you must plug me in" icon. I plugged it in and was instantly able to slide the lock bar to the home menu page. 10% battery was registered at the top. Over the next 5 minutes I logged her onto the network, and began the over-the-air download/install of 5.0.1. At the 5 minute point her battery said 23%. No way this is software, (except maybe the measuring technique). I think these bad batteries are just that...bad. If her battery was 1/5 the capacity of mine, it would appear to diminish by %age faster, and likewise increase. I am just saying.
