I can really see that happening in the next 5 years or so as they build out the iPhone OS platform.

"Q: Where do you see things going with the Apple TV?
A: It's still a hobby, but our gut tells us there's something there. The go-to-market model is difficult, and we have no interest in being in the TV market. But we have continued to invest in the Apple TV and will keep doing so."

I am so glad to hear this! :D My guess is that they are transitioning the Apple TV to the iPhone OS to add the SDK and App Store and integration with iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch! FINALLY! But yes please give us a hardware refresh this year Apple!

I also love that he said... "we have no interest in being in the TV market" to shut up all the delusional people that think Apple will make a TV with Apple TV in it!

Ha, the only thing ironic about that song is that Alanis Morissette does not know the definition of irony!

Him saying they have no interest in the TV market really means nothing. They said the same thing about tablet computers and phones, too.

Not me. I bought it because it is a nice little couch surfer for under $300.

It would have been a waste of a question, because all Tim Cook would have said is that Apple does not comment on future products.

Waste of a question because everyone knows that at some point laptops get updated. If there was some speculation about some killer must have new feature that would have been worthy, otherwise why waste time on just a spec update?

What's with this "just a hobby" crap  That line is getting old. Can anyone name any other electronic gadget for sale now running on 3yr old hardware?

So basically the same thing they will ask themselves if they buy the iPad?

Wouldn't that just confirm it was a hobby then? It may be "getting old" but you just cited a reason why its true...

No, but I can name a line of laptops that are running very old hardware :D

I thought it would be the perfect travelling companion for a photographer. Think about it: Users can take photos with their digital SLR (the photo sizes are quite large). They can then upload them to storage on the iPad whist showing off their snaps to friends on the large touch screen and then on a projector. Then I realised the thing only has 32GB of space AND a single Apple proprietry port so whilst it is certainly possible, it actually defeats the purpose of convenience since you'll be carrying multiple adapters around when the iPad could have sported USB ports and SD card slots.

The iPad is still a great though unoriginal piece of work well tied into the iPod Touch ecosystem.

He also said Apple TV sales increased 35% last quarter...it must be a good hobby anyway.

:D Maybe failure wasn't the right word. It's more of a niche product. Out of the 8 people I know with Macs only one has an Apple TV. And he never uses the darn thing. I would have picked one up if it wasn't tied to iTunes.

Quite the weaslewords-using from Apple. AppleTV is the lingering failure and gets dismissed as a "hobby", yet the MBA is right in there w/ failures, too.

Steve Jobs at iPad launch: "This is the most important thing I've ever created."

When the iPad inevitably fails: "This was just a hobby."

I guess they can add the hockey puck mouse in that "hobby" category! lol

I'd like to see that nasty fanboy *LTD* try to defend the MBA, since his precious Apple can do no wrong. MBA gets near-zero attention!

Xbox 360? Sony PS3? TiVo?

The current Xbox 360 and PS3 models aren't the ones that came out at launch. The PS3 has slimmed down and the Xbox 360 has HDMI and a different chip (That's why the red rings of death aren't a problem anymore)

Sadly, the Wii is the same!!

Edit:Now that I think about it, they might as well be exactly the same. The hardware on them has changed a little. But they aren't anymore powerful the the launch ones.

Exactly. But we know when they're released that's it , until the next major release. Is there 3yr old Blu Ray players being sold right now in BB? 3yr old TVs, etc.. ?

I'm not wondering why I bought mine. I use it all the time. It's compact and it can do anything I want a computer to do. It has amazing battery life and when I do anthropological fieldwork it is easy to break out and type notes on (with the benefit of a full keyboard). I think it's hilarious when Apple tries to defend their obsessions such as being vehemently anti-netbook. Jobs gave no real reason why netbooks were bad other than that "they are cheap laptops." So what?
