This shouldn't be viewed as Apple doing anything good or bad. If Apple wouldn't be here, another public company would gladly take their place.

This should be viewed a problem that a $3 trillion market cap company will eventually face. There's no good proxy for this size; not even standard oil. When a company grows this large, and is this successful, with such market concentration in so many segments, there will eventually be some antitrust action.
Because politicians dont think they are getting a large enough piece of the pie. Same as it ever was.

Jesus Christ, people.

Stop labeling the folks with the lawsuit as Socialists (in a pejorative sense).

They're not.

The people behind this are actually Capitalists trying to trick the government to FORCE a corporation to open up a private ecosystem so THEY can make money.

When it comes to this stuff, NO ONE's hands are clean.

What you mean is that they are Communists!

You will need to back this up with examples and sources. What government are you talking about? And how are they exploiting?
I do? Only you can make sweeping statements without examples and sources?

How about this: What is the only entity that can legally threaten the use of force? What is the only entity that can legally confiscate earnings and property under the threat of force? (Check your definition of monopoly.) Then, tell me how great it is to pass this power along to unelected bureaucrats and agencies (created out of thin air) that grow bigger and bigger by the day and answer to nobody.

Perhaps THAT's why it seems the crys for "small government" are --in your mind-- getting out of control.

Except Apple only makes a handful of fudge. They own all the fudge stores (the only means of distributing fudge), and every other fudge maker needs their permission to sell fudge in them. Apple make up the rules about who can sell what fudge and why. Apple can remove someone’s fudge from sale at any time if they are displeased. Also if someone starts selling a new kind of fudge and it becomes really popular Apple can make their own version of that fudge and give it away for free as a means of attracting sales of its other fudge.
Point proven. You are correct. It’s apples store. It’s their phone. People buy it because they love it. At least I do at least. If I wanted an android, I’d buy it. I’m not in prison. If I wanted to create a phone, I would. Free Market. Free Society. Or is it? Lol.

I'd mostly like to see more flexibility around choosing your own default apps on phones, and opening up APIs into icloud.

I'd love to run more backups to iclouds or duplicate backups but it is entirely locked down.

It's very odd when people defend this kind of thing, as if arbitrarily limiting this functionality makes the product better.

There is one power company in my town. That is a monopoly.
And, it’s not even a bad thing (well it is, but I mean… :)) The problem comes when they use that monopoly to create and expand a monopoly in other markets.

The bad part would be if the power company also made a play to control ANOTHER market (like, say, appliances) by providing power in a way that it would only work with their appliances. Then, using that growing number of devices to go into home automation. And, cutting a deal with local developers such that all new builds would have their appliances and automation built in.

I don't think so, there are plenty of other Apps you can use that do the same thing.
It is literally impossible for anyone to describe Apple’s “monopoly” without using the trademarked names of Apple’s products. :)

Standard Oil “oil”
AT&T “telecommunications”
Microsoft “Operating systems” or “browsers”
Apple… Apple’s App Store on Apple’s iOS and Apple’s Apps.

Once you delete any of Apple’s trademarked product names, though, you’re just left with a description of a market Apple has no monopoly in, so I guess I see why they do it!

Don't like it? Buy Windows/Android/whatever. Remember a few years ago when suddenly everyone in the current administration was eager to remind us that you don't have a "right" to post on Twitter or even own a bank account? Guess what, you don't have a right to have Apple build out special integration for your smartwatch either. They need all the money they can get, what with debt issuance skyrocketing and no end in sight.

It all seems like total BS to me. I felt the same way when Microsoft had similar problems with pre installing their web browser all those years ago. People have choice they don't need to use Apple products. Surely the government has better ways to spend its time and money.

I think I get what you're puttin' down...

The good news is that most smart devices that have Apple's Homekit also have Alexa and Google Assistant integration. So you're not locked into Apple for those devices.

But you know what? I actually like Apple's HomeKit. I previously had a bunch of stuff with Samsung SmartThings but it wasn't a good experience.

I figured since I use an iPhone, I might as well try HomeKit stuff. And I'm glad I did!

I am trying to understand how AirTag competitors can complain. The only thing they cannot do is sniff the user's location data and invade the user's privacy. Third-party AirTag competitors work fantastically with the FindMy network and I love Pebblebee products. Pebblebee also goes out of their way to make sure you can use their products without even having a Pebblebee account (e.g..: you can upgrade firmware from their app without logging). Only drawback to Apple AirTag competitors so far is that so far I cannot do the guided arrow locating when it is nearby that I can do with AirTag. I don't know if this because there is no U1 chip in the third-party devices or if Apple needs to open up an API.

Anyway, Apple delayed releasing AirTag until they could share the FindMy network with third parties. I don't think it could be more friendly to competitors than that.

The DOJ should sue Nintendo big time!!!

I tried to put my PS5 and Xbox games into the Switch cartridge slot and they do not fit!!! That’s an unlawful monopoly!!!
Apple isn't being sued, they are being investigated, the lawsuit will follow based on the investigation.

I too currently own an iPhone, my 8th I think, I bought it because I love iOS and I have no wish whatsoever to move to Android. I would like my phone to have its shackles removed however. Removing those shackles would in no way compromise the current experience for any user, people who still wish to do everything the Apple way would absolutely be able to do that, much as they can on a Mac.

IMO Apple are using scare stories to brief against opening up iOS as they don’t wanna give up control. I don’t think it’s malevolent, it’s just how the game is played - you don’t give away control easily. But once that level of control is reduced it won’t harm Apple all that much, they’ll still make huge profits on their great products.

Societal pressure. There’s a reason everyone and your friend uses Apple products and it has everything to do with FaceTime and iMessage. That’s forced use of a product.

LOL! This is a very odd take. I bet you could stand in front of an Apple store for a week and not get 3 people to say that bought into the Apple ecosystem specifically for iMessage and FaceTime.

How is this a thing? What functionality could "financial firms" possibly want that they don't get with the current setup?

They want to offer their customers the option to make nfc contactless payments either using the iphone with their own apps or with apple pay, not only with apple pay. They already do it on Android, Apple doesn’t let them do it on iphones.
