Unbridled neoliberal capitalism doesn’t work. Communism doesn’t work. But why focus on two extremes. There’s a middle ground to be found here.

But it’s weird you immediately jump from breaking up monopolies and antitrust lawsuits to … socialism.
It’s not weird. It’s intentional.

If Apple was sabotaging other ecosystems/platforms, they should be punished; but they don‘t. And how could they: they don‘t have anything approaching a monopoly in any of the markets they compete in. All those leeches like Spotify, Tile, Epic et al. just want to reap what Apple has sown by building their ecosystem from the ground up for two decades now. So much easier than to build their own, I guess.
And that’s why they’re looking into it. This has come up time and time again in piecemeal fashion in different states, so soon there will be a ruling by the Justice department on whether “running your business legally as you see fit while, at the same time, not specifically working to end your competition” is legal or not. There will be a lot of people that don’t like the result, but the Nintendo’s, Sony’s, and Microsoft’s (and many many smaller companies with exposure to the US) will breathe a sigh of relief if it’s found that they can simply run their company responsibly in the way that makes them the profits required to stay in business.

We CHOOSE to be locked into the system. No one is forcing me to buy Apple products, least of all Apple.
Well - even here in Europe you can only get the Apple Watch to work with Multi SIM. The problem is - this is only possible with a contract - which most people don't want, because prepaid is much cheaper. plus; It's about time that the Apple Watch can also be used stand-alone. Then you can choose between it and/or the iphone.

Listing Beeper as an Apple competitor is stupefying.
I just went to BestBuy.com and can’t find a single smartphone Beeper makes! THERE is the real conspiracy, BestBuy is blocking smartphones made by Beeper and Tile! Why aren’t they in your online stores, BestBuy!?

Oh, and next I’ll be looking for Spotify’s portable music device, BestBuy, so be ready.

I mean if Apple started by allowing people to 'jailbreak', a simple switch in settings with a disclaimer you have to agree to....

Although it is completely ridiculous, it's a product people choose, it's apples own design and their choice. It's just a personal choice that I'd like to see Apple open up, but on their terms, not forced.

This is such nonsense, at every turn. Tile can get lost. I used their products, and they were crap.

The rest of this is nonsense. DoJ smelling money, and nothing more.
Tile didn't fail because Apple denied them anything, Tile failed because their business model sucked.

Apple succeeded doing something Tile wasn't in a position to attempt, that much is true, but Tile weren't trying.

I’m clearly talking about Apple and the US.
Just in case anyone asks see this chart

Still one can't argue this strictly about iOS usage percentages, there is obviously a preference for the way a iPhone works, affordability, and its security.

Literally I seen used iPhones as the preferred smartphone here in the states even for people begging for money by the road. They have much more lasting value it seems. Built to last years, not throwaways.

Another example of government agencies that have no idea how to run a commercial business. Government agencies should be outsourced to multiple private companies so that they may compete. Imagine two DOJ's which had to compete with each other, and be profitable, and allow complete access to their systems and protocols.

Jesus Christ, people.

Stop labeling the folks with the lawsuit as Socialists (in a pejorative sense).

They're not.

The people behind this are actually Capitalists trying to trick the government to FORCE a corporation to open up a private ecosystem so THEY can make money.

When it comes to this stuff, NO ONE's hands are clean.

And Apple should stop playing the kid company and grow up, they were once viewed as a tech serious company, we are adults we should be able to choose what we let on our phones and computers.
Wrong. If you want to do that you have a Windows PC or Android phone. Don't buy Apple then whinge about it. That just screams spoilt brat.

Yeah, „opening up“ the Apple ecosystem(s) by force would lead to less (real) competition/choice for consumers: it would become just like Windows/Android and consumers who prefer the Apple way would be robbed of a choice. FFS, just look at Android: there are many (hardware) competitors, but it‘s all just shades of grey, everything like everything else with minimal differences. iPhone/iOS, now that‘s something completely else.
Alphabet’s already bored with the whole Android thing, especially when the lion’s share of the aftermarket sales is going over Apple devices anyway. Once developers have a way to get their wares on a platform with millions that have already proven they have the desire and ability to spend large amounts of money, the non-iOS device software market will dry up in a matter of months.

Enthusiasts will still buy Android devices because there’s some interesting form factors to be had, but the “app store” side of things will become a ghost town.

Thanks for your sacrifice. Communism and Socialism doesn't work.
Neither does Capitalism, but it's so entrenched many people can't dream of stepping outside to look back in. Imagine a world with no stock markets, where companies grew with their own profits, and end users were NOT the product being sold for the real customers, shareholders, to make money. Companies makes devices and decisions for profit for their shareholders; everything in between is 'the product'.

DOJ doesn't "make money" either way, but Apple sure does. You can't be this naive, or is it reflexive projection?
The DOJ should have to 'make money', or there should be multiple DOJ's so that they have to compete with 'the market', just as they are looking for Apple to to do with 'the market'. Government agencies need to be outsourced so there are multiple, open and free versions.

there’s also Apple’s rejection of Cloud-based gaming that is arbitrary and anti-consumer IMO.
It’s not arbitrary, it’s the same thing Nintendo does when they provide Cloud gaming on their devices. There’s not a Capcom App or Ubisoft App with several games under it, each game is listed separately (there are currently 21 Cloud Version games on the Switch). I’m sure it requires more effort for the developer, but, sometimes, making heaps of money requires a little effort. :)

While I am not sure about some of these accusations, the App Store is for sure a monopolistic practice, and distorts the market mechanism. Both US and EU regulators are right to go after it. Customers should have the right to choose.

There is also a political aspect to this. Apple can pull streaming apps like Parler from their store, if they don't like the political message. I am not personally a Trump supporter, but his supporters were unfairly targeted by Apple and other tech companies in the past. Citizens have the right to free and open access to such apps.
