Cool idea to give away an album for free. But it's a really bad album. Musically it's uninspiring and it lacks U2's signature sound.
Why on earth did they use an ancient band like U2 anyway? I mean if they wanted to use an old rock band then why not use a cool one like the Rolling Stones.
They should have gone with Coldplay or some other more youthful band that is more relevant to today.
Or if they really wanted to do something cool then they should have asked a few solo artists to collaborate and come up with a unique album made especially for the event. A handful of fun and quirky songs that would remind everyone of the event.

I mean it didn't even feel right, watching the event, to see U2 there and have them close the event. It really didnt feel right. It wasnt exciting nor inspiring. It was more like "what the heck are they doing there?" not "wow, this is so cool, wish I was there for this". In fact I disconnected the live stream as soon as they started playing. LOL

Anyway, back on topic, crap album: select all > delete > empty trash. Simple!
Funny thing is, I haven't deleted tunes from iTunes in years. This was the first time in so long that it was a rather odd experience.

From the most downloaded free album to the most deleted album of all time. Way to go U2! LOL

Whether you like the album or not, it should not have been shoved down our throats. What the product was does not matter it's the way in which Apple forced it upon us that was wrong.

Apple had to do this so we can remove it from our iTunes purchased list. Entirely Apple's fault. But I am glad Apple fixed their mistake.

I assume, based on the principle of "What the product was does not matter", you would feel/react the same way when your bank deposits money to your account based on a promotion they are running "What? Why is there a deposit in my account for $10? I didn't ask for this... calling the bank right now and asking them for a way for to remove this unwanted money!"

That's the analogy you want to use?

Money can be spent however someone wants to use it. It's pretty universal. Gifting someone something they don't want isn't exactly the same. They couldn't even SELL the album if they wanted ;)

Dude is just a miserable selfish hard to please person.

In iTunes, right click the U2 Album, select Get Info, then tick the box next to the "Skip when shuffling" option on the Options tab. Done.

And the Apple TV?

For what its worth I kept the album. I was just addressing your points

Of cause I would do that. Because I don't want to be later accused by the bank of spending money that was not rightfully mine. I say this as the bank would never give away money for any kind of promotion.

I keep a total tab of what's in my account. If it's out, be it up or down, I'm on the phone to the bank 9AM next working day to get it sorted.

That dude (me) like many others is exactly why Apple allowed us to remove the U2 album. Not everyone has the same musical tastes. You have to understand this.

Also I'm not miserable or selfish as you say.

I have to respect someone who abides by the principal, regardless of gifted item.

I agree. Coldplay are so not youthful anymore. But Coldplay are actually still relevant and they have a long history with Apple. So they are a better choice.

You make a valid point, although I could have used the free soda with purchase analogy.

The irony in this thread is mind boggling. Every single poster that writes about "it's not a big deal" has specifically gone out of their way to respond in a thread about something that supposedly doesn't bother them. This thread, believe it or not, was actually voluntarily clicked on by these posters, read through, and responded.

Can you imagine how these people who never complain (except to complain about people complaining) would react if this thread was forced to be their homepage and to change it they'd need to download a tool? I mean, clearly they can just type "google.com" into the URL bar, so there's nothing to complain about, right?

On a side note, I was bored and KNEW there would be a thread about Apple forcing this garbage on people (the keynote made it obvious) and decided to find some drama to entertain myself for a little bit. :)

Rather than letting customers choose to download the album on their own, however, Apple pushed it to iTunes accounts, causing some devices to automatically download the album without explicit user permission.

True, Apple should have put this in the "Free on iTunes" section instead of giving it to everyone by putting it in their purchased folder but come on people the level of hate that being spewed is totally out of ridiculous! They were giving a gift to their customers and this level of vile is not needed.

For all of you that posted who think this is so evil get a real life.

Better yet, why don't you just go away as you and your venom won't be missed.

U2 represent a past of over-produced corporate stodge.

They haven't been good since they were a post-punk band.

Think I would have jumped to Samsung if it had been Coldplay lol
Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.

Really? Product RED and Coldplay iPods??
Coldplay talk about the association at Apple's event for Jobs death. Go watch it, then you'll know.

Talk about first world problems!
Well your avatar is of a bloke who makes a living solving first world problems.

Epic Fail by Apple.

Give away a free gift from the apple store, don't make that decission on what for me. To many different tastes in Music.
U Pooh.. maybe 1980's U2, not this commercial Sh they put out now.

Better yet, just give me a lower price!

I'm glad that Apple just assumed that all of us with an iTunes account like U2. I'm not a U2 fan, but I wasn't all up in arms because it showed up on my iCloud account. It literally takes 30 seconds to remove the album.

I don't listen to U2, actually I don't listen to rock music period!!!, I don't want crap that takes up the already little 16 gb of space.

would you want a bunch of dildos sent to your house all the time?

At least they might have some resale value? (Unless they were sending them to 500 million people simultaneously.)

This U2 album sounds like Coldplay's latest album too. Both are uninspiring. U2 lost their way in commercialism 5 albums ago. There is no edge anymore for either of these bands. Very much a watered-down, over-produced sound. It's not bad, but it's not that great either.

Ghost Stories is one of Coldplay's worst albums. But even that is better than the **** U2 album that Apple tried to force upon us. (in my opinion of cause)

Actually, it is a big deal. It's the real life equivalent of somebody kicking in your front door, putting down a bag of trash (with the option to open it up or not of course), and then tell you that you shouldn't complain since it's easy to remove.

And yes, I just did compare U2 to a bag full of trash. Because that's what they are - both as far as their "talent" is concerned and regarding their political and "social" attitude. Otherwise I have no strong feelings about that.

Not really because that "bag of trash" is actually used by many people and they are happy with it. This isn't a big deal because it is like buying a Xbox and receiving a free game that you or may not like. You can play the game or easily throw it in the "trash". Plus I'm not a fan of U2 but it didn't matter to me.

The album, band, etc. are not the point.

The point is Apple pushed Spam into my library and all my devices.

This is unacceptable. My library is my own it should not ever be touched by apple in any way shape or form unless i specifically tell them to.
