No iCal function = software problems

I think Apple are having trouble with the sync software between iCal and the iPhone/ Touch. When the iPhone was first announced they avoided showing anything on the iCal app; same when it launched; same with the iPod touch. Even with the iPhone as it currently stands you can't have multiple calanders, nor can you work with To Dos - there are simply no where near enough features to show up palm or even microsoft's handhelds. I also remember how buggy the Mac-based iCal sync was when it first came out; data loss was dreadful. So with the iPod touch I think they just don't want to give people something second rate to complain about. Leopard and some seroius software development are needed and I guess we are about a year away from the iPod Newton that we really want. Patience.

This is probably the closest thing to the truth over what's going on right now. I've heard that the calendar in the iPhone is fairly buggy. To be honest, I would rather it be this than a marketing ploy like they are being accused of (esp by me). Let's just hope they get it working soon after release for all users: tiger, leopard, windows, etc.

(Oh, and bring back Notes while you're at it with all the fancy ToDos of Leopard).

its the consequence of apple trying to restrict how users use the device.

Im not gonna say palm is better as a PDA (which I actually think it is, consider iPod Touch's current incarnation). but its not restricted. I don't need to sync it with computer, its self IS a small computer.

I can backup the rom to a SD card, so i won't lose any data.

I can transfer apps as well as files through BT or USB without any syncing app.

This is a bright way to go, and I hope apple realize it, and doesn't tie the device down to apple's syncing app.

Heck, iPod Touch is attractive, but only because of its browser and its looks. Apple need to put out more effort on its functionality to give user a perfect product.

Pardon my ignorance (we don't have iPhones up here in Canada), but is that true? What, do you have to choose one of your calendars or something? Even my 3G iPod supports multiple calendars on it's black and white Gameboy screen!

No Contact editing either

This is what my chat with an Apple representative just turned up.

You are chatting with Elizabeth, an Apple Expert
E: Hi, my name is Elizabeth. Welcome to Apple!
E: How may I help you today?
C: Hi, I was wondering if the calander will be editable on the ipod touch itself
E: No, that cannot be edited on the iPod directly.
C: Contacts can be, correct?
E: Not edited, no.
C: Alright thank you very much
E: You're welcome.
E: Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
C: I don't think so, thank you once again
E: Thank you for visiting the Apple Store. We appreciate your business.

This seems very strange to me especially since on the Apple website it says under multi-touch "or adding new contacts". I don't know, maybe she was confused or else a lot of people are going to be mad. I for one wanted the touch so I could get rid of my Tungsten T. Grrrr. I'm so confused

maybe just adding new contacts & not editing current contacts.
maybe apple is just too lazy to make the sync back functions in iTunes..

That's true. The Apple iTouch Features page which had the original iCal info says:

..a touchscreen QWERTY keyboard perfect for ..... adding new contacts.

No specific mention of editing at all. Interestingly, the iCal info was originally the same too:

..entering calendar events.

Again, no mention of editing there either.

is there some legal reason why they can't do this?

They could overtake the PDA market if they would allow it.

im kind of dissapoitned in the no adding events to iCal. I was looking forward to adding dates to it for exams and whatnot..

Oh well, still in my opinion the best iPod update we have seen in a long time. :D

I believe the iPhone combines all your iCal calendars into one. So you get all the events, but they're not separated into Work, Home, etc.

Well if the manual says so, then it must be there.

Still seems odd that you can do this with contacts but not calendar entries.

I would believe the manual at this point over what any Apple phone-answerer says. And at this point, the manual says that contacts can be edited, added, and deleted and any changes will sync with your computer when you reconnect. It says there is no calendar editing.

Manuals can sometimes be missing last minute changes to the software. But here, I would agree, it is looking like it is correct.

Maybe Steve Jobs was reading some of these posts and realized that he wanted everyone happy about the new iPod touch rather than post negativity over all the gadget websites and bringing down Apple's name. Kind of a stupid thing to get mad over though.

Edit: I just downloaded the manual and I can't find where you can edit calendar events. What page is it on? What am I missing? Did they update it behind our backs again?

Edit again: I didn't realize everyone was talking about CONTACTS and not Calendar, so sorry... I was looking for the wrong thing.

hyperactive marketing

this all too classic really. i think what's happens sometimes that marketing people thing they have to "do something" to earn their keep. the funny thing is that most of these types will readily complain about some other product that get hobbled in some way to differentiate from the high end. i for one thing a perfectly good option for many who want a "full featured" iPod Touch is to buy an iPhone and not activate it (or just do prepay on AT&T). you pay a little more, but i suspect its less about price and more about moving to AT&T that is holding back many and having them consider a Touch instead.

Manual Details

If the manual is to be believed entirely, then how does one explain this?
