2. Holding a phone next to your brain does increase risks, the thing is, nobody knows how much.
What's fascinating is that with all the stupid conspiracy theories going around, nobody figures this out.

If you are afraid of radiation from your phone getting into your head, justified or not, then it would be common sense to use wired headphones or earphones so you can make calls with your phone in your pocket, or at least use Bluetooth.

Apple must have remembered what happened King Louis and Marie Antoinette.
Free cake with every iPhone sale! Let them eat cake!

Alternative - include a coupon for a free charger block and/or headphones with each new iPhone. A lot of people wouldn't bother redeeming them, but those that actually needed/wanted it would do so.
That would be against this French law. There must be headphones out of the box.

If Apple cared about the environment, they would allow aftermarket upgrades to components such as RAM, separate components so that if 1 $10 component dies in a 13 month old Mac without AppleCare that the user doesn't have to decide between a $1500 parts+labor repair job or a $1400 new computer

And most the self-repair people are motived by saving money, not reducing their carbon footprint.

If repairing your Mac would cost more than buying a new Mac, almost no-one would do it.

So has apple actually said they are doing this for environmental reasons? Or just some rumor/speculation from apple fans trying to justify the purchase?
Don’t need to justify anything. Apples financials speak for itself. The apple fans don’t have to justify nada. They can even defend apple for removing the charger and EarPods.

because the added charging cable included has cyncially been chosen to be a USB-C device rendering the "millions of existing chargers" no use with the phone at all. They knew exactly what they were doing selecting that cable to include.

This move is not environmentally better and it costs the consumer more.

On the other hand, how many people have a Usb-a charger but not a usb-a lightning cable?

Obviously, someone who switched from android phones with an older usb a charger, other than that I am not sure.

I know I have a couple of usb-c to lightning cables, but I have over a dozen usb-a to lighting cables from previous years.

Ironically, my guess would be for most (but of course not all) people this is a better deal. If you already have a usb-a power brick, use your already owned lightning cable. If you want to fast charge, use the included cable with a new apple usb-c, or another generic usb-c.

the fact they didn't lower prices disables the argument of being friendly to the environment.

"no charger because everyone has one at home anyway" one can understand. fine.

and then they put in a usb-c cable. when barely anyone has a usb-c brick at home. lol. apple trolling really hard.

oh sure, blame the laws for something Apple must do, but not do anywhere else.

That's the oldest trick in the political handbook.

Considering how small the earpods box is, at this point it shouldn't do much against the environment.

Unless they ship it separately to the customer, or unless they ship it in a bigger box, like any small thing Amazon ships.

Typically apple had the EarPods in a little crevice in the regular box - and despite what apple says, I would suggest that the cardboard savings is minimal. Supposedly they are "green" because they are not constructing the EarPods and AC adapter at all.

I wonder why the French can't just require anyone who lives with kids to purchase headphones at the same time - rather than requiring all customers - with kids or not - to get this extra hardware.

No one throws earpods in the trash. Let's not exaggerated to defend Apple's greediness.

Trashed as in disposed of. No matter how you throw it away, some of it ends up in the landfill.

Earbuds are made of materials that are not easily recyclable—like silicone rubber, magnets, and plastic—and their affordable price means that they are an easy product to simply throw away. Apple’s earbuds specifically are no more environmentally friendly than any other earbud brand

Pseudoscientific codswallop? I suppose you know better than the International Agency for Research on Cancer then? In 2011, the classified RF radiation as a Group 2B possible human carcinogen.

Take a look at what else in the Group 2B (and other categories listed). You’ll find that a hell of a lot of stuff is listed as possible carcinogens, including coffee.

Individual causes of cancer are notoriously difficult to pin down. One person can smoke cigarettes a day for 50 years and never have cancer. Another person may smoke for 5 years and get lung cancer. One person may work in the field of radio comms and never experience an illness in their life. Another person will blame their illness on radio waves because they read something online. One person may tan every summer and never have a problem. Another person may get skin cancer and they have no clue why because they hardly went out in the sun.

Of course playing safe is good anyway, use sun lotion and sun glasses. Don’t smoke because it is unhealthy anyway and a waste of money. If you want to use EarPods go ahead, but they are not going to magically block the radiation from the phone in your hand or pocket.

There are millions of children using phones across the world and a few billion adults. If there was data to suggest that the phones were harming them then we would have seen this data by now. It would be extremely obvious and hospitals would be full of cases.

As for radio devices such as phones, the amount of non-ionising radiation they emit is extremely small. And the spectrum they use, whether 3G, 4G, 5G etc are part of the pre-existing electromagnetic spectrum. Are the French going to ban the electromagnetic spectrum? Maybe wrap their citizens in tin foil to protect them from the Universe 😂

Note, homeopathy is very popular in France and endorsed by the government. Homeopathy is quackery. It’s literally just sugar pills and water droplets.

The biggest benefit of this move apparently wasn't about saving any material though. (from what I understood of the keynote)
It was about shipping 70% more iPhones per pallet, thus reducing final logistics' gas emissions by 70%.

But some people don't care about EarPods anymore, they go directly to collecting dust. It seems like AirPods is the future (even if I'm still resistant to paying $200+ for earbuds I will use in public transportation)

What do you know that the International Agency for Research on Cancer doesn’t?
Cell phones giving you cancer is some crackpot urban legend from the 90s when I was a kid. Back when they’d send you free antenna booster and brain blocking stickers with the flip phone accessories you ordered from eBay. All of it is hogwash.
