a retina display would be too extreme on a device that size. 4 times the pixels is just not necessary. not to mention the reduction in battery life and performance it would cause. although maybe a 20-25% reduction in pixel size would be nice.

I guess you probably said and STILL maintain this point of view about the IPhone 4 and retina?

Reality is, IPad having retina would be spectacular. And battery would hardly be affected as you make it sound, and performance neither due to the doubling of ram and dual core processor we are expecting.

The alternative to "fragmentation" is "stagnation". Which do you want?

You're essentially arguing that a platform has to have a ton of poorly built devices in various states of lockdown in order for the few decent ones to succeed, correct? You're essentially arguing that whatever idea pops into a companies' head is tested on the end user/customer rather than actually designed and evaluated before release is the best way to do business? How else do you explain Android devices that were once promised OS upgrades being left behind indefinitely? After a certain point who cares how many options you have if 99% of those options are junk? The bottom line is you're making a false comparison by changing the definition of fragmentation in the middle of your argument – essentially conflating fragmentation and diversity while alluding to evolution by the end of your argument instead of sticking with fragmentation referring to the various states of lockdown in the Android market due to phone carrier interference and subpar design.

iPad w/o retina is like watching standard definition tv.

iPad w/ retina would be like watching HD TV.

I'll wait...

I can see Best Buy having the old iPads at least two weeks after they are available in an Apple store. It seems like they wait until they sell out of the old products at full retail before they sell the new ones.

Well actually, for it's size it will have more ppi than any television currently available.

How come apple.com/store still shows 24 hours?

Because you don't stop selling what you have just because something new is coming out... and, you don't go advertising it either to kill sales.

This is a very normal business practice. Customers who buy today can always return and exchange.

I know even this weekend, I was in an Apple store and felt bad for the people walking out with iPads.... but I also know, they'll be able to return it if they really care.

Because they have tighter control of their inventory and knowledge of exactly when things will be available. Places like Best Buy order huge quantities in advance, so they still have some old stock to get through before the iPad 2 arrives.

I still don't understand this logic. The iPad resolution is fine.

Uh...his "logic" is every bit as valid as yours. While, I agree that the "wa wa wa, I want a 300+dpi iPad" gets a little old...using the same 1024x768 in the next gen is lame IMO. Are you saying that the iPad screen will never need a resolution bump, because it's just "fine" the way it is? I'd like my revolutionary Apple products to be...revolutionary. Much respect...

Retina has spoiled everyone.... there's nothing wrong with the iPad screen... it's right in line with all other LCD's on laptops. The iPhone4 just has set a new standard and everyone wants it now. Me included, but I'm not expecting it in the iPad2.

Can't wait to get one... getting one for my daughter as a B-Day present. :D

How come apple.com/store still shows 24 hours?

Because
- Apples marketing philosophy is "there is no new product until there IS a new product", so they'll keep selling iPad 1 as if there will never be an iPad 2, until iPad 2 is announced and ready to ship.
- they still have iPad 1s to sell, so might as well sell them to anyone who will buy them (and that's a lot)
- accounting has already accounted for return-and-upgrade of late sales.

Got 'em? sell 'em. Cope with the consequences.

I dont disagree with you about the spectacular-ness of a retina display on iPad. I for one would love to have a display so sharp it make my eyes bleed.

i am just saying retina display would mean 2048 x 1536 resolution. in contrast the 27" cinema display sold by apple is 2560 x 1440. and certainly lighting up a display with that kind of resolution would use more power.

Hah! This is very exciting. :D
Can't wait for March 2nd, it's taking forever to come.

I'm just pissed at AT&T's 3G performance. Today I was at a site where I could only get 100kbps download, and 50kbps upload in 3G.
It's ridiculous!!!

That's the thing. I don't own an iPad. But I go into the Apple Store and hold my iPhone 4 next to the iPad and the difference in clarity of text is overwhelming. I just will refuse to buy an iPad until it has a display that can match my phone.

you don't go advertising it either to kill sales.

The industry learned that way back in the days of the Osborne 1 (the first portable computer, running CPM on a 3" CRT). Osborne announced the imminent coming of the Osborne 2. Sales of the Osborne 1 evaporated, as everyone decided to just wait for the new model. Problem was, Osborne needed the money from sales of the old model to fund the completion and initial production of the new model. The company folded.

I get your point...but I think its not that direct. As backlights dont match pixels (yet), I dont think the power consumption would be unduly more based on the number of pixels. That said, it WOULD take a more powerful GPU to power it (which would/could use more juice). I think there are some great energy efficient GPU's that could easily output things like photos/text/pics @ 2048 x 1536, and 3D games could be generated at 1024x768 (so it wouldnt take GTX 580). I think its mostly about product development, iPad1(Innovative)/iPad2 (slight improvement)/iPad3(Knock their socks off...like the iP4). Much respect!

Does it still require a computer?

I'd like the iPad (and iPhone/iPod touch) to be able to be used as a stand-alone computer, so people with zero computer knowledge (I'm talking about people who never used a mouse) can get an iPad and stop bugging me with their "computer problems".

Battery will be affected of course, but just not drastically. Maybe apple can curve around this somehow.

Cheap shot. Didn't even bother replying directly to me with a reason why. Grow up, thanks.
