Good news! I'm really excited to see what Apple has in store for the iPad 2. I won't be upgrading regardless, as I don't see the iPad as being the kind of device I want to get in the habit of upgrading every year. Mine works fine now, and will for another year.

I'm still holding on to my hope that Apple will see the light and add real stylus support, but I know the chances are slim to non-existent.

In any case, hopefully we get some iOS 5 news.

Thanks for the reply Nothlit. I wasn't aware that the ordering process was different for each product.

No problem. And now for my less-snarky answer. :) The first iPad and the iPhone 4 were offered for in-store reservations, but not all products are. If it's announced as "available immediately" then you should (in theory) be able to go to an Apple Store that afternoon and pick one up without a reservation, but sometimes the stores don't actually have them out on the shelves the same day, even if they are supposed to be available then. Calling an Apple Store by phone is usually an exercise in frustration; I've seen it ring (not even on hold) for a solid 5 minutes before anyone ever answered. On the other hand, if the new iPad isn't going to ship until a couple of weeks following the announcement, then almost certainly you should be able to place a pre-order online and have it shipped to you.

The iPad's screen looks like the 3G's screen. A higher dpi display will be a phenomenal upgrade. Right now it is totally outclassed by the iPhone 4.

Yeah, a higher resolution would be nice, but I might even be willing to settle for an "on-glass" screen (like the iPhone 4) vs. an "under-glass" screen like the current iPad and previous iPhones. Hopefully they've been able to translate the process of laminating the LCD to the touchscreen over from the iPhone 4 to the iPad 2, even if the resolution is still 1024x768.

What's an iPad? And what a silly name - makes me think of . . . oh never mind.

Still, no one will buy it

Hahaha

Good comment. It's been great fun watching all the *******s who ripped on damn near every aspect of the iPad one year ago get proven so completely and utterly wrong. And it has been amusing to then watch as they work themselves up to orgasm over tablet devices that basically do the same things.

Yet, they aren't as good as the iPad.

Perhaps, but the hardware is regarded as "the bar": 1GHz Dual Core with HD screen (1280 x 800) and 1GB RAM.

Those three things are key. If it can't meet or exceed those specs, then it'll probably not be worth it.

I'm not even mentioning the front facing 2MP camera, or the 5MP on the back, which the iPad 2 *should* get, but isn't that big of a deal...

That would be impressive. Better view angles as well. That wouldn't convince me to upgrade, but that plus the camera would put me in the "I'll be happy if my iPad breaks" category.

This is sweet, I just sold my 1st gen 32gb for 50 bux less then I bought it for, and the new ones are coming out pretty much right away, sweet!

According to whom? "The bar" has been the iPad. If Apple exceeds the current iPad, they then raise the bar. Android junk hasn't set any "bar." Get out of here with that mess.

Apple is losing ground with their hardware updates. Google is pushing to control the hardware a bit more, something they obviously picked up from Apple. All three major Honeycomb slates have identical hardware - that is the standard for the new Android slates.

If Apple comes out with anything less than that, they will surely lose their mindshare. People are just waiting for Apple to slip up and come out with a sub-par spec-list.

Danish resellers

Just so you know, resellers in Denmark (Eplehuset and Humac). Has had the iPad ON SALE for a week or so. Hinting towards a sell out before the new version is released. :)

Edit: Forgot the on sale bit.

In the UK Quidco (cashback website) are offering 4% off current iPads at the Apple Store. Offer runs out March 8th at midnight. My money is on ipad 2 pre-orders starting March 9th (in the UK).
Sounds reasonable to me.

Apparently we disagree. Technical specifications matter only to people like us (I guess) who would spend our free time on a rumors website. They don't matter to the public. The source of Apple's mindshare has nothing to do with RAM, pixels, or other arcane hardware. As long as the next iPad runs iOS, ships from Apple, and comes out this Spring, lightening will strike again. All lot of that is my opinion, but it worked out pretty well last year, so we'll see.

As much as I want the iPad 2 to be awesome, when was the last time they released a major product upgrade and the community wasn't by and large dissapointed?

I can't think of a time.

Let's curb our expectations. I say, two camera, NO retina, and only 512 memory.

You're falling into the PC-specification-trap mindset. Specs are nice but they aren't always a direct indicator of a products usability, lifespan, desirability or popularity. People who are hung-up on specs usually are underwhelmed by apple updates. Prepare to be disappointed.

Good. The sooner they ship iPad 2, the sooner I can get the iPad 3 with retina.

Oh yeah. The sooner they ship iPad 2, the quicker I get iPad 15 that makes me coffee in the morning!

There are far more important things they can do to the display than upping the pixel count. They can increase contrast and black levels. They can provide better color. They can reduce glare and provide brighter back light in sunny conditions.

Increased pixel count is the bottom of my screen wish list.

Yes, I want better black levels and contrast levels but you have to understand that this won't happen until apple make the switch from LCD to AMOLED technology, where true blacks will become reality and exceptional colour sharpness.

apple are paying 7.8 billion to Samsung for their parts, thus it seems more evident AMOLED coming to IPad and IPhone sooner as opposed to later. iPhone 6 (VERY likely) and iPad 3 (plausible) I say.

I know -- and if I hadn't already plunked down over $1K after taxes, I'd be ready to buy. But I have to consider this already big purchase and skip a generation. I thought I made this clear.

Who says that machine won't still be baddass?? All that matters is side by side, app by app competition with XOOM and whatever other honeycomb tablets lie on the horizion. The battle is in reality not on paper. Remember specs just indicate potential they don't guarantee performance.

The US online store is still shipping within 24 hours.

How about last week with the new MacBook Pros? I don't recall seeing anyone bitching about how the new MBPs are only twice as fast as the old ones, and the new Thunderbolt port only does 10gbps and daisy-chains 7 devices with no loss in speed.

I do agree with your expectations though, and I wouldn't mind them either since then I'd have no problem just getting a used/refurbed iPad 1.

Black is absolutely gorgeous on AMOLED but colors are arguably worse on an AMOLED screen. It's inaccurate and oversaturated. Also the sharpness isn't any better on an AMOLED either. Now if you like overly bright colors then I wouldn't blame you, but it's objectively not better at its current status. Sometime in the future we'll move to AMOLED but for now I think it was a wise choice of Apple not going with the young technology.
