I hope we see an iChat app in the near future. As far ass front-facing for vid chat, I really could care less. I'd rather Apple invest the time and money into developing something new. Not to mention, that they don't even yet allow video recording now, and it is easily implemented and works great.

While I can see an imminent native chat client on the iPhone the premise of video is irrational. Video would do awful things to battery life and data rates would require WiFi/3G and still be choppy at best.

I would argue this is Apple dumbing down the current firmware to make it that much more amazing when it comes out. Plus in the current model the battery would be killed, but with not much being added to the next iPhone, the battery life is bound to improve alot, so they would have the room to add this function. I would also argue that video chat would be absolutely amazing and a mind blowing feature. Think of it, a mobile conference room. Also, think keynote wise, Steve could stand on stage and talk to Wos in the audience or another building or..... country! Think of the possibilities and press that would capture. I know I sound arrogant when I say this, but I guarantee video chat will be in the next iPhone.

I'd be surprised if we ever saw this, but I do hope iChat comes eventually. It would make the phone that much useful and that much closer to the blackberry.

You don't sound arrogant, just a little blinded by a feature that you really want. Apple has left IM apps to the third parties. If they had a version of iChat coming, I'm pretty sure they would have gone all Podcaster on AIM and BeeJive and all the rest of them.

So, you do care?

No, I really don't.

Can iChat send pictures, like MMS, to other people with iPhones? If so, bring it on.

Who cares if it has video chat on a freaking phone. Having iChat would be nice enough. I just want an IM application that is actually useful. We finally got third party apps, now we need PUSH to make the IM applications relevant. What's the point of having one when you can't receive messages when you go back to the springboard? The workarounds only work so well before it becomes annoying. I hope 2.3 is out before Christmas, but I assume they'll announce it at MWSF and showcase PUSH and iChat, if it actually comes out.

ichat would be cool. But I use msn more, you guys think there will ever be an official one from ms?

You mean Microsoft? Will there ever be a Microsoft app on the iPhone??

Umm. I wouldn't hold my breath. ;)

I swear I saw a video the other day of a cell phone that's coming out soon with video chat... can anyone help me with a link or name or anything? I am 100% certain the next iphone will have video conferencing ichat capability.
Wow! You guys really don't seem to know that every single phone sold in Europe supports video conferencing...

Just be another App to ignore, People I know all use MSN

Sorry guys, but I cant get exited over this

Anyways, this whole prospect is very unlikely; of iChat built in. Backgrounds is not a possibility either; maybe 3.0 :)

but there is an MS app on the mac, whats the difference?

And no one uses it.

What? No way, you're telling me there's Apple fanboys on a website dedicated to Apple products and news? Who'd have thunk...

Well, it's always best to be objective. That's what lead us to like Apple's products in the first place. I would say that 90% of Mac users were once microsoft fans. However, they stayed objective enough to switch. Things shouldn't be any different now. Beside, this website is Macrumors, not Macfanboys.

i think ichat only would stay with apple's standards, They never built in any support for MSN messenger in mac, so why the iPhone. They might be onto something

I don't get it. Was that posting at daily review written by a 3-year-old? Do they have any proof other than the daily "I think..." that we do here?

dude does macrumors have proof on half of their posts. No websites do, This is just speculation, and a pretty good one in-fact. you shouldn't be harping on someone because they are guessing at something.

It’s been a while since we met. iPhone 3G Gen 2 and Me.

Built in E-Book reader; alternative to Stanza; able to download via iTunes

That’s all, folks.

Another message for you to decode. I know, I’m annoying sometimes.

They posted this yesterday too. I call BS on the whole site.
