I figured this comment section would be filled with hate. And unfortunately I was right... :(

I think this is fantastic news. It shows that Apple is committed not only to the high end tablets. With the starting prices of new tablets at $600 and $800, I was pretty worried about the direction of the iPad line. But this is a device that I might actually purchase to replace my mom's old iPad 2 (or heck maybe even my own iPad mini 2).

Another iPad to the already messy, fragmented, unnecessarily long line up of iPads to saturate the already saturated mobile market while continuing to leave the demand of Macs behind..

I couldn't disagree more. This is the first step in simplifying the iPad line up. Apple will have iPad and iPad Pro. iPad will be 9.7" (maybe 7.9" too but I think that's less likely) and iPad Pro will come in 10.5" and 12.9". There will be no numbering just like the Mac line. I think this is what Apple is doing.

As for iPad's vs Macs... it's fuzzier, but if Apple handles it's correctly (gives proper iOS updates) then the iPad begin to grow again. PC market has been declining for nearly a decade and I don't see that reversing anytime soon.

Well, in that case I don't know what to do. I don't want to buy the new one if the screen is worse than the Air 2.

Could buy an Air 2 now, but what happens to the current 9.7 pro when the new updated pros come out? Will they be reduced in price?

I sold my 4 a while ago and have been waiting for a new update - not quite as simple as I thought. Tempted to just go with the Air 2...

Not to be snarky but why do you have to upgrade your 9.7 pro? Nobody here knows the answer to will the price be reduced (as in will apple continue to sell it as a lesser model).

I waited long enough and kind of had a feeling that new macs wouldn’t be coming out anytime soon. Nonetheless, I jumped ship and bought a Windows PC system over the weekend – a Kaby Lake quad core i7, 8gb DDR4 ram (expandable to 64), 4gb Gefore 1050ti graphics card, 256gb SSD and 1TB HDD, umpteen ports on the back and front, etc., etc., all for the price of an i5 dual core mac mini that cannot be upgraded. Windows 10 is not as polished and elegant as MacOS X, but it works well enough, does what I want and the system is blazingly fast. The best part is I can upgrade the system to my heart’s content.

I’ll miss MacOS, but I’m not paying those kinds of prices for inferior and outdated tech, especially when I can’t upgrade it. Apple's priorities are not on desktops and I don't blame them - the money is in mobile, especially when people upgrade every 2 years or so.

You won't be disappointed with Windows 10. I have no complaints. But in terms of hardware I always build my own and have been doing so for the last 22 years. It may cost a little more than a prebuilt Windows machine but it's right on par with a Mac cost wise. Plus I have ports galore and can upgrade anything within the system. I expect my i7-6700K and motherboard to last another 2 to 3 years before upgrading again.

You misunderstand me - I haven't got an iPad pro 9.7. I'm talking about the model that's in the shops, currently available to buy.

I haven't got an iPad at all right now, I'm considering if I should buy the Air 2 and risk the current 9.7 being a cheaper and better option when the updated versions come out.

Is the A9 significantly faster than an A8X? That was a triple-core chip and held up pretty well I thought. If the A9 is better, I bet it's not by much. Certainly not for multithreaded tasks.

Based on the iPhone SE the A9 is faster in both single core and multi care applications. Not much faster on multicore, barely. We don't know the clock speeds of the iPad variant though.

I have no issue with the new iPad...was in the market to upgrade from my original Air and with the price cut a non brainer.
All those wanting an updated Pro I'm sure Apple will hold an event and hopefully they will be great devices.

Why am I not surprised that Apple makes the pleasant, surprising, & consumer-friendly decision to upgrade their "best deal" iPad AND lower the price of it....... but MR can't even give begrudging praise for that awesome decision!

Nope. Just page after page of rando complaints that this sharp price drop & increased specs are confusing and create fragmentation... with a great deal like this; how on earth will the ignorant consumers ever know what to buy??! A nail in the coffin... etc.

It's laughable really.

Let me be the ONE to buck the whiner trend:
Kudos Apple!! YES!! When you get ready to drop a more expensive new product- decrease sharply the price of a different new model as well!
For example- what if, ahead of the new (pricey) MBP intro, they had introduced a new, higher specced MBA at a 17.5% discount from the previous gen?? Nobody could have complained when the new MBP dropped. If they didn't like it- they'd have an awesome alternative!
That's what's going on here- when they drop this "edge to edge" iPad, if the cost is prohibitive to some: well, I'd say this new one should be a nice alternative then!

Nope. I will enter October 2017 with my iPad Air 2 for 3 years and counting with no reason to upgrade unless we get a launch by then with a product that would be worth it. My iPad has been running like a champ and I've tried the Pros before returning them, simply put no reason to upgrade. My wife, who has an iPad mini 2, will probably be upgrading before I do whenever that time comes.

I already have a black iPhone 7 I absolutely love but that Product Red 7 they introduced today does look incredibly slick. If I didn't already have the phone I might have considered that.

****! I went to buy the new iPad for my mom and it says 'currently unavailable'. Way to go apple!!!!

I understand when it's a big press event that you might want to include various products some of which aren't ready yet.

But this is a silent update.

Thanks for wasting my time!

If only Samsung's new Tablet S3 was not overly expensive.

Can anyone explain why this would need to be thicker and heavier? lol.

Because it's Apple. Left over screens, casings and A9 processors. It's smart and dumb at the same time. The only saving grace is the price but when you have a market that is saturated with 9.7" iPad's that are still updated that $329 price is less of a bargain. The iPhone SE was a little different because people wanted a small phone that was just as fast as the current model. But no one is going to ditch their iPad Air or Air 2 for this. This is really meant for people that don't have a tablet or they have a pre iPad Air model.
