Apple’s premium can cover my theft insurance for years. And that includes everything I own.

If there's a way to add it on the iPhone upgrade program I can absolutely see the appeal. $12.50 a month to replace your phone if you lose it doesn't sound unreasonable.

I've never lost my phone, but you don't typically buy insurance planning to use it. Same should apply for a phone, really.

When I went through the pre-approval process for the iUP there was an option to add the theft protection to the phone for around $4 more a month. I personally don't see the appeal of this, but see why it would be useful to some

That's cool. That was through Apple? I didn't know that was ever an option until now.

Yes it was through apple. When I went through the pre-approval process, I had to pick the phone I wanted (as usual) but then the next page had me select between applecare+ or the new applecare+theft protection. If you're currently on the upgrade program and plan on upgrading, you can do this by going into the apple store app and selecting the phone you'd like to upgrade to

I literally just spoke to them on earlier today. The rep couldn't process an express replacement device until she saw on her end that FMI was turned off on my existing iPhone.

Yes to be able to authorize the repair it does need to be off. You can turn it back on however. Same thing happens in store.

Probably a way to prevent fraud. "I cannot find my iPhone! I'd like a replacement." Sir, give me your Apple ID and authorize us to find it. Cool. It says it is in your home.

No. It allows Apple to block the old phone so you didn’t just sell it to someone. Simple as that.

Note that if you pay your monthly phone bill with a Wells Fargo credit card (must be credit card, not debt) and many other cards, they'll cover the cost of replacement up to I believe $800. Friend lost his phone and they sent him a new one right away and a check to cover the cost. Was back up and running in a day.

Then don't get it? Hint: filing a theft on your normal insurance will skyrocket your premium. Trust me, I have a $3100 MacBook Pro that's essentially cost me around $7000 due to increased premiums. You're not doing the real math.

At least they’re giving us a choice to add theft or loss protection for $99 more, rather than force us to pay for it.

I personally have applecare+ and 199 for my X is just fine, I keep track of my own phone.

 $299, nope. That is almost MBP AC warranty price and $199 for the “cheaper” AC without theft and loss still too much.

Some might justify this and that is fine.

Considering what I use my phone for, between this and the price gouging for the Xr, if I ever get another iPhone it will be the least expensive model available with no AC. I’ve only needed it AC twice (though I did not know or use it for the second time, i.e. the battery replacement for the 6s).

At this point, I am thinking my tech dollars will go probably go elsewhere when the time comes.

$299 plus $269 deductible crazy

vs $1500 replacement if you bought the top model? There's plenty of market for this. This is an OPTION. There are other options. Like.. don't buy it.. self-insure.. it's $100 over the standard applecare + which i've used 4 times on my iphone 7, outside the standard warranty period. I'm not horribly rough on my phone, but one of them was possibly preventable damage. even at these prices, I would have still come out on top vs one out of warranty replacement. People complaining must wonder why they have to pay for all kinds of things in life. A lot of complaining about additional options here.

2 options is too confusing? Really?

There is a lot of options for the consumer to understand. Just reading the associated MacRumors article on this is not clear or easy to understand.

The bigger point here is Apple used to focus on simplicity in all they do. Not so much anymore. Leave the insurance options to insurers and just focus on designing hardware and software that works.

I don't care much for AppleCare - Can see it would be beneficial for some people, but I'm just careful with my devices....
Me too. I said the same thing on reddit and people came out from the woodwork to call me an idiot for not buying something I don’t need

This is great, for you! You're totally the intended market for the entry level android phones! Tons of options out there for you, all with pretty basic feature sets. This will suit you nicely: https://www.amazon.com/Motorola-2nd-generation-Unlocked-Cellphone/dp/B00MWI4F0O?th=1
You can just buy a couple and swap sims when you break one.

Seriously? Apple has been offering AppleCare on all of their products since forever. The cost has always varied from product to product.

I can't believe people are complaining about this!

Not for me, thank you anyway.

I could buy an Xr or Xs if I want to, having spent 1k on a 7+ and knowing what I use, I would rather put that into a computer I will know I will use to its fullest. Why waste money and line Apple’s pockets further when all I need is an SE? Sadly, that window closed this morning through Apple. Also sad that Essential
stopped making phones, the only Android I was considering.
