Seriously? Apple has been offering AppleCare on all of their products since forever. The cost has always varied from product to product.

I can't believe people are complaining about this!

And even funnier that you are taking so much time to complain about our opinions!

Just kidding with ya, but on a serious note: no complaints here. I never get Apple Care on iPhones or Watches. I'm simply pointing out that it is now becoming a convoluted option for the average consumer. On the other side of the coin, as a longtime AAPL investor, I'm pleased that Apple will be squeezing even more money out of people. In general, AppleCare is a huge boon for Apple's pocketbooks.

Another way Apple can exploit cash from us?
Obviously they make money on these, but so do insurance companies. I had my phone swiped from my hands a few months ago (classic snatch and grab while I was texting). Insurance covered it but only after a $500 deductible. For some people these plans will be worth the peace of mind.

Probably a way to prevent fraud. "I cannot find my iPhone! I'd like a replacement." Sir, give me your Apple ID and authorize us to find it. Cool. It says it is in your home.
True, but this could get tricky. After my phone was stolen a few months ago, my first call was to AT&T to block the IMEI. Doing so cut it off from the network entirely. Plus if the phone is turned off after theft, how would Apple know whether Find My iPhone was active?

The prices of stuff today just killed any chance of getting anything for a generation or 2 behind. It's a shame. The watch is unreal.
I disagree. For most people the iPhone Xr will be fine. And the Series 4 has ECG that required FDA approval. Quite amazing technology.

Wait until Apple starts charging interest on buyers who use their 24 month installment plan. As interest rates go up, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple stopped offering a 0% interest rate 24 month loan.

Apple doesn't finance the installments. Citizens Bank does (in the USA). Apple wants to increase market share without sacrificing its premium image--they will most certainly continue 0% financing through banking partners.

Apple is just now covering lost or stolen. Verizon already provides the coverage for $13 monthly. Considering that I upgrade every year, I paid $156 for Verizon’s coverage.

Ah. You were expecting that coverage to be offered for free. Makes sense.

Yes the theft/loss is a good deal considering the other option is to buy a whole new phone at full price. Some people expect everything to be "cheap" or free.

Yeah. Because if it isn't free then Apple is greedy. Astonishing so many here feel that way.

Not complaining, just flabbergasted.

And again, how is it a convoluted mess? It all seems incredibly straight forward to me.

It's worth looking into protections you may have with your credit card company you used to buy your iPhone, as well as your renters/homeowners insurance policies. Between those two, I completely covered the theft of my first iPhone X. My deductible with State Farm is $500, so they covered up to that, and I got my credit card to cover the other $500.

Then don't get it? Hint: filing a theft on your normal insurance will skyrocket your premium. Trust me, I have a $3100 MacBook Pro that's essentially cost me around $7000 due to increased premiums. You're not doing the real math.
Not to get into an arjmsntarive back and forth but I think this depends entirely on the insurance. My wife lost her wedding ring ($5k), it was replaced by a similar ring, and we didn't see a change in anything. I also had a windshield replaced and my car insurance premium didn't budge an inch. Many factors can contribute to this, not the least of which being length you've been paying into it.

The tech is great. But I'm in Canada the prices are crushing.

If they just wanted to exploit you for cash they would have stuck with making you buy one off the shelf if you lose your phone or it goes stolen. And having seen the **** refurbs the carriers insurance provides this could be a really good thing. I have gotten ahold of a bit of info that suggests that replacements will come from Apple, something I’m trying to verify.

For $299 only Apple will use Find My iPhone to send their security experts to go beat up the thugs and get your iPhone back!

Actually its more likely that the requirement is so that someone can’t benefit from ‘locating’ your phone. And if they are supplying the replacement it will be in the repair records. Plus part of the program might be the IMEI being blacklisted at least in the country of origin. Which would be another way to make sure a thief can’t use the phone

"Theft and loss coverage requires you to have Find My iPhone enabled on your device at the time it is lost or stolen" Yet they make you turn off Find My iPhone when requesting an express replacement, thus leaving your phone vulnerable for a few days while you wait for the replacement. Makes no sense.

They can turn off find my iPhone as long as the phone isn’t in lost mode. Although with this they might have a way around even that, long enough to do the replacement.

So much for the simple and clean options when Steve was at the helm. Way too many options and way too confusing!

Steve never gave a **** about helping folks if they lost their gear or it was stolen. So maybe for some that ‘complexity’ is worth it

Says in first paragraph that Apple will be the exclusive provider.

My question is about the servicing. Since this is Assurant Insurance. Looks like Apple still does everything

Thank you for buying AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, an insurance coverage underwritten by American Security Insurance Company (“ASIC”) with its administrative office at 11222 Quail Roost Drive, Miami, FL 33157-6596 (305.253.2244). Apple has agreed with ASIC to be the exclusive provider of all services and replacement devices to you under AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss.

It hasn’t changed mine. In fact, every so often I get a discount due to less-than-expected claims from the customer base.

With that attitude, why don't you criticize every company on the planet who ever offered products or services for sale? Apple is offering a service. Yes, it's designed to be helpful for those who buy it. Yes, it's designed to be profitable for Apple. It's up to each consumer to decide if they need or want the service and if they consider the price to be acceptable. If not, they can simply choose not to buy it. It's getting ridiculous to see so many with no clue how capitalism or free enterprise works. If you don't like any product, or you feel it's overpriced in your opinion, don't buy it. Period. Stop the ridiculous claims that Apple is exploiting or extorting or forcing people to pay for something. Every company has the right to offer goods and services for whatever price they choose. Each consumer has the free will to decide what they will buy, and what they won't.

I would complain more about the increase in basic AppleCare+ from $129 to $199 than the extra $100 for theft/loss insurance. If you upgrade annually you won’t even pay that if you pay through Apple Upgrade.

Alongside the launch of the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, Apple has introduced a new AppleCare+ plan that's designed to protect against theft and loss.

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is priced at $299 (or $14.99 per month over 24 months) for the iPhone XS and XS Max and allows for two incidents of accidental damage, theft, or loss coverage, so long as the purchaser pays the deductible.

As with regular AppleCare+, Apple will repair accidental damage for $99, but a lost or stolen phone will be more expensive.

It will cost $199 to get an iPhone 8, iPhone 7, iPhone 6s or iPhone 6 replaced, and $229 to get an iPhone XR, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, or iPhone 6 Plus replaced.

For a replacement iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, or iPhone X, customers will need to shell out $269. Getting a new iPhone will require the device in question to have Find My iPhone enabled. Disabling the feature voids coverage, according to Apple.

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss will be available as a purchase option when pre-ordering an iPhone XS or iPhone XS Max this Friday.

It will also be available for the iPhone XR when that device becomes available, and based on the pricing of the plan for the iPhone 8 Plus, it will cost $249 or $12.99 per month for 24 months.

Apple is continuing to sell standard AppleCare+ that offers coverage for two incidents of accidental damage but no theft or loss coverage. Regular AppleCare+ for iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will cost $199, so the Theft and Loss coverage is $100 more expensive.

Older models may still be available at Apple authorized resellers, even though Apple no longer offers them directly.
