It's the iPad. What innovation is needed on an annual basis? This is a mature device. I love this sub genre of people who want "innovation" every year but don't know what that means or why they want it. Hyper consumer brain rot manifesting as entitled superiority.
I think most people hoped that the rumors about the two front cameras were true. I never believed them anyway, because it’s not very “Apple-like” to do something like that. They’ve already solved this through software and Center Stage.

Been in the market for a new portable machine for a few years now after my 12 inch MacBook died (due to me trying to replace the battery 😡)

I got an M4 mini recently so don’t need a full on computer, so an iPad will suffice

Will 12 gigs of memory be a bottleneck? I haven’t got on board due to Apple forcing me to pay out the nose for the 1TB model for the 16 gigs, weird decision going to 12 instead of 16 on the base models

I guess the main draw here is that the base model now comes with 12gb ram. Otherwise, I am not sure what to make of it. I definitely won't be upgrading from my M4 iPad, and I suppose it will make for a decent upgrade for users still on M1 or older iPads? To those to stuck with their 2018 iPad pros, now is as good a time as any. :)
And let’s not forget the biggest market, those that don’t even own an iPad Pro. :) Some would say, “Why put in an M5? The chip from 2018 is more performance than anyone needs in an iPad!” They may be right, but then they’re buying a 7 year old device instead of, as of next week, a one week old device!

External displays up to 120Hz you say.... I mean I don't want to get my hopes up but I do hope there's a reason for that tidbit in the form of an updated Studio or Pro Display down the line.
I think new Studio Display's and Pro Display XDRs with 120Hz are coming between now and the summer.

I am hoping for a 7k or 8k 32" 120Hz Pro Display XDR (depending on what PPI they are trying to hit). I think that DP 2.x over TB5 can support this bandwidth (but idk for sure)

Doesn't necessarily mean something either way, but driving a 6K display (like the Pro Display XDR) at 120 Hz would probably require Thunderbolt 5 (or some serious DSC with noticeable quality loss) and the base M5 still doesn't have it.

The only thing I’d upgrade my M4 iPad Pro for is better speakers and possibly better battery.

Speakers are my primary concern though. That’s it.

I think this is finally a worthy successor to the A12X iPads. (Plus the screen cracked on ours a while ago, but it's definitely starting to show its age anyway.)

I see a base 11" model (maybe 13" if I'm lucky!) in my future for Christmas. :)

They've started advertising the RAM in the config choices. I wonder why that's suddenly need-to-know information?
They also started talking about the amount of RAM in iPhone keynotes this year.

In any case, I had just received an M4 iPad Pro on Sunday that I am now returning. The $200 extra (M4 was on sale) for 50% more RAM is well worth it for me. Feels ridiculous to have a phone that has more RAM than my iPad Pro, both purchased in the same year.

"New"??? this "stick a new processor in it and call it new" now with pretty much every device. As a huge apple fan - this is disappointing. There is ZERO innovation anymore with Apple - they are doing as little as they possibly can with the product line.
Wasn’t it just the M4 that did the major overhaul to the screen? My biggest complaint about the M1 is the bloom.
