I am still on a 11" 2018 A12X as well. The battery isn’t what it used to be, but otherwise it’s hanging in there. I’ve ordered the new 256gb 11” IPP in hopes of having greater performance in Procreate and better battery life. I never thought that I’d get 7 years out of my 2018 model!

As an M4 iPad Pro user, i don’t understand this update. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the M4 and they’ve spent money on an M5 for no real world advantage(s). Spend the money on releasing an iPad with 50% more battery, that’s what will grab people’s attention, not M5 fluff, which doesn’t mean that much to the average user.
If you understood supply chain management, you would understand the update.

When you start up a new line (the M5) you start at lower yields, and sometimes you can bin those chips to be usable (turn off the parts that are bad, it is common practice in chipmaking). So you (Apple) paid for those chips, where do they go? Do you throw that money away? OR, do you put them in iPads and Vision Pros that can't take the thermal load of an unbinned "pro" version of the chip or one with all the core enabled...

No need to upgrade from M4 for like 8 years. :D
I agree. The only reason I bought a new iPad Pro was because my wife’s iPad needed replacing. I might as well have the newer iPad. She can have my M4 2 TB I don’t think she’ll notice any difference between that and the M5.

Apple today announced the next-generation iPad Pro, featuring the custom-designed M5, C1X, and N1 chips.

The M5 chip has up to a 10-core CPU, with four performance cores and six efficiency cores. It features a next-generation GPU with Neural Accelerator in each core, allowing the new iPad Pro to deliver up to 3.5x the AI performance than the previous model, and a third-generation ray-tracing engine. A faster 16-core Neural Engine also delivers more energy-efficient performance. Apple says that performance gains and breakthrough improvements over iPads with the M1 chip are "staggering".

In addition to the M5 chip, the cellular versions of the new iPad Pro feature Apple's custom-designed C1X modem, which allows up to 50% faster cellular data performance than its predecessor, with much greater efficiency.

It also features the N1 chip, a new Apple-designed wireless networking chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread. Apple says the N1 brings better performance when connected to 5GHz networks, and improves the overall performance and reliability of features like Personal Hotspot and AirDrop.

The new iPad Pro features over 150GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, which is almost a 30% increase compared to the previous generation. It also offers up to 2x faster storage read and write speeds, and the 256GB and 512GB models start with 12GB of unified memory.

The new iPad Pro adds the ability to drive external displays at up to 120Hz and now supports Adaptive Sync, which provides the lowest possible latency in external display performance.

Fast charging is now supported, allowing the new iPad Pro to charge up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a 40W adapter or higher.

The new iPad Pro is available to pre-order starting today, and will be available in stores on Wednesday, October 22.

glad i bought my M4 in June

Same battery life I suppose. Better battery life would lure me into trying this screen again. The M4 made my eyeballs feel like they were going to start bleeding.
Totally agree - keeping the battery life at 10 hours is a joke. It's not even half of what a MacBook gets now. Back when laptops got 6 to 8 hours - the iPad's 10 hours seemed great. Not so much any more.

So, you CAN record 4K ProRes video at 30FPS on a 256GB iPad Pro M2 such as mine, but you CANNOT on a 256GB iPad Pro M5.

That's nice, Apple.

The one card up Window's sleeve had been the GPU's. To me that and affordability had been the main reasons people bought Window's machines, and Macs are now more affordable and superior in every other way to Windows machines. And right now, with Windows being a complete mess and next to impossible to find anyone who think they are actually good, the reasons to buy Windows machines are slowly evaporating. But hopefully not too bad as we need competition.

I still own a couple of Windows machines for rendering, but pretty soon I can see that lone reason for me to own a Window's machine may be gone. My M4 Mac Studio still can't compete with latest Window's Nvidia machines, but the upcoming M5 Max chips should come pretty close, and without crazy cooling, and crazy wattage or a terrible OS.

Nvidia is making money hand over fist with their commercial chips and could care less about consumer chips right now, but I wouldn't doubt Apple could make a dent there too. They wouldn't need to care about CUDA compatibility as they have big enough ecosystem to make it happen. Better efficiency and looking like better technology too.

Where it comes to AI, I wouldn't worry about Apple, I would worry about Nvidia. They are check-Kiting everyone right now with their chips. That doesn't look good. That doesn't sound good. It looks like they need save some of their riches for a rainy day, as when this current AI gold rush is done, and people stop buying the picks and shovels they are done too. Like done done. And it looks like that gold rush is teetering as we speak as VC money has been hiding loses, and the contagion from shady VC practices may expose more than the cockroaches.

What are you going on about? Do you actually think Windows is going anywhere? Windows marketshare has actually gone up in the past couple of years.

I guess the main draw here is that the base model now comes with 12gb ram. Otherwise, I am not sure what to make of it. I definitely won't be upgrading from my M4 iPad

Trade-in offer for iPad Pro 11" M4 base model was $605 — pretty good IMO. With that, an upgrade would cost $394. Will not upgrade either, but could really use that extra 4GB RAM.
