So what?

Market share is a view of the ENTIRE market... calculated by 3rd party analysts. It's a comparison of a bunch of unrelated companies.

Yes... the iPhone has low market share. Then again... Apple only sells a few models of the iPhone... mid to high-end models to be exact. But the bulk of their iPhone sales at any given time are their rather expensive flagship phone.

The rest of the smartphone market is populated by phones running Google's Android operating system... from multiple manufacturers. There are a lot of them... no doubt. But Android is made up of mid to high-end phones... AND low-end phones.

Most Android phones, especially low-end Android phones, aren't contributing much other than numbers on a market share chart. It's a huge number... but with little payoff.

Apple's phones, on the other hand, attract developers, accessory makers, receive high customer satisfaction, etc... despite being a low percentage of the overall smartphone market.

I know what you're saying... Apple has only 12% of the smartphone market compared to Android's 80%

Then again... look at what Apple is able to achieve with just 12% of the smartphone market. This part is key.

And the same thing is happening in the tablet market too. More and more tablets are being sold overall from dozens of companies... which makes Apple's percentage of the tablet market go down.

But so what if millions of cheap white-box Android tablets get pumped into the market... when the iPad still gets all the attention?

Yes... Apple's market share number is going down on paper... but support is going up in the real world. That's the big takeaway from all of this.

It's actually a testament to how bad Android is at exciting the market... even though Android represents an overwhelming majority of the market.

8 out of 10 smartphones sold today are running Android... yet everyone is focused on the iPhone. That says something.

In other words... market share is largely irrelevant. It makes a great headline... but there's no compelling story afterwards.

I agree & it's real easy.

Google is all about Revenue... Apple is all about sustaining Profits.

With this - they know to care for their high-end customer, and keeping their customer experience & satisfaction high through the entire process from the product to the people. Which is why their brand will always be stronger... they can sustain profits always, and hardly ever overstock Apple items in stores.

Android can hardly get anyone to adopt to the newest software release, because so many phones aspect ratios aren't compatible... and Google/Android could care less about the consumer in that situation. They just want you to buy the latest & greatest or suffer with older software.

I understand the intent of the Ad but does anyone here do any of those things right now?

Yes. I use Ubersense and Coaches Eye (the app the Sumos are using) every week and I know lots of coaches in town who use those apps daily.

----------

I noticed that for sports training/iPad combo like sumo stance in this ad and golf swing in an another ad? there is always someone drawing on the body for improving human alignment etc. Is there a specific sports app for this or just using a simple drawing app?

The app the Sumos are using is Coaches Eye. They also make a version of the app just for golf swings. Also look into the app Ubersense.

Chris Wilcha and Emmanuel "Chivo" Lubezki collaborated in directing the spot. Park Pictures was the production company. Still looking to find out who shot it, but Chivo is also a DP, so I presume he shot at least parts of it.

Just passing along, even Ad Week didn't say who did it.

Well said.

I would also add... Google is an advertising company. They bought and developed Android to get their ads onto as many mobile devices they could. That's why they give Android to any manufacturer who wants it.

For the manufacturer... they use Android because what else are they gonna do? Develop their own operating system?

Google is happy because they're serving ads on a billion smartphones.

And you're right... Google doesn't really care about the consumer too much. They just sell ads.

The manufacturers care a little bit more... because it's their device that you hold in your hands. But even then... the manufacturers sometimes don't provide the best experience... like providing updates to the Android OS.

And why should they? The manufacturers only make money when you buy a *new* phone... not when you keep using the same phone for years.

This is in stark contrast to Apple's philosophy. Apple makes both the hardware and the software... and provides additional services too (App Store, iTunes, etc)

Apple is a completely different kind of company. It's always been difficult to compare Apple to everyone else. But people always try.

It used to be Apple's Mac and OSX compared to Microsoft and Dell, HP, etc

And now it's Apple's iPhone and iOS compared to Google and Samsung, LG, etc.

It's fun to say how Apple is disadvantaged because they don't have enough market share. But like I said before... Apple manages extremely well despite that. It's never been about how Apple stacks up to the rest of the industry... it's about what they do.

Android certainly gets the trophy for highest market share... but it's a hollow victory.

Also, Google having somewhat monopolized the "search" game helps them with online targeted advertising. They get metadata from even your gMail about your IP's wants - it's scary. And, everyone "googles" everything these days.

Google has the sophistication from an SEO standpoint and the basis of the google search query to hurt the competitor and help them through the search tool & targeted ads. They've been heavily doing this for close to 2yrs now. You can even see it on the targeted ads within macrumors.com's every page!!

I think a Class Action Lawsuit might stem from this one day when smart people find out what's up... the amount of metadata Google has these days is fn crazy.

Through all this... Android/Google does capture the most market share for mobile devices, but yes, it is a hollow victory, and they do it spineless with a deceitful approach in my opinion. Also, many Android phones get left on shelves, and they still account for market share in most estimates as the brick n' mortar store sells them cheap sometimes through subsidy plans or redistributes to other easy markets while always including them in the market share estimates. Also, A lot of the fanny's of Android have to adopt even quicker than a fanny of Apple, because in the Android World, you never know which phone is best for which software, and for how long. Personally, think you are an idiot to get an Android phone if only you do it for pure finance reasons, especially if you have a family plan to finance.

The biggest thing about Apple these days, and they are sustaining the market clearly... is the purchasing power of an iOS device user over an Android user or any other mobile OS user. iOS users still have the highest purchasing power out of any device, and they lead the market, so developers will stay forever to Apple for this, and of course many other avenues Apple does well.

I think you & agree a lot about Google... and of course, Apple. That's what's up.

Apple devices shown, fit in so naturally in these commercials.

Seeing the two trekking in the mountains got me excited to use an iPad. I do a lot of snowshoeing in North Western Ontario, where I'm often out of cellular range - so the assisted GPS doesn't work for me.

Does anyone know if there's a protective case with GPS available for the iPad Air?

I think you don't quite understand what "assisted GPS" means. "Assisted GPS" uses cellular towers to get a rough location and the time. This makes it a lot easier and quicker to find the GPS satellites, but even with no cellular tower anywhere near, the GPS satellites will eventually be found. And once they are found, "Assisted" and unassisted GPS work exactly the same.

So turn the GPS on, then wait a minute or two, and it will work. Of course your maps need to be on the device as well. There are apps for that.

I like this "here's to the crazy ones" style advertising.

Did anyone else think the intro to the 2013 WWDC was exceptionally emotional? :p

Timing a coincidence??

Robin Williams' speech inspired the legendary "Here's to the Crazy Ones".

https://www.macrumors.com/2011/12/14/behind-the-scenes-of-apples-think-different-campaign/

Robin Williams is in a new show called, yup, "The Crazy Ones", and in this weeks (12 Jan 2014?) re-airing of the Pilot episode they mentioned the very Think Different campaign here (see 15:45, if not the whole 20 min episode).
I also think the iPad Air spot was also shown during show, but cant remember.

So there is a nice, tidy, circular path.

Coincidence?

(in RW voice): I think NOT!

(ps looked though first few pages of topic, no mention of the TV show, sorry if missed)

Foolish

Inappropriate hit job on Christianity at :58 second mark. "Cities filled with the foolish" along with a picture of a cathedral. Nice. This stuff doesn't happen by chance people. There is no way a pic of a gay pride parade or a civil rights parade would have been put with the same text.

Should Christians quit working at a seemingly bigoted organization? Should Apple change it's advertising or continue spreading this subliminal crap?

Entirely up to the Christians. But it *is* foolish though, isn't it? To believe so fervently in something that isn't based on fact? Thats the nature of ALL faiths - christianity, islam, buddhism, and a gazillion other faiths held by tribes in rain forests that you would think utterly ridiculous. But if those Christians on Apple's payroll need their faith more than they need their income, then good luck to them. I'm sure Jesus will sort them out.

Might want to take a look at this link. Just sayin.
