So the big push from apple to drive down stock(as in inventory, not stock price) and keep selling iPhone 5s's in the upcoming sales dead period prior to what we all know will be the iPhone 6 announcement later in the year begins.:D

The majority are also apps that has been around since the iPhone 4 too. ;)

Does it matter? No. Apps should never be less useful because of the way they look.

Only if you looks at apps in a purely functional view. I have seen wonderful pieces of code buried in very poor UIs keeping its utility away from the market.

One app in particular, a vertical music player for public settings, took a month of design work getting the "tap count" of the UI down to 10% of the first UI design. This drove the sales up making it earlier to demo, learn and use.

Finishing this job was a uphill battle as the individual running the product engineering was a database guy going back to mini-frames in the 70's. I knew it was going to be a fight when I saw mostly console windows on his office desktop computers.

Kept from eye rolling when he proudly demo'sd the app's command line and batch mode options. Some of the features were only accessible via command line!

Great ad, horrible song.

I like the song!

And my ears are bleeding. That might be the world's worst song. I've screamed better than that as a 5 year old.

I like the original song. This version was cool too I think – I just think it's charming that it's a little rough around the edges. There's already enough overproduced stuff when it comes to music these days, in my opinion.

I don't understand why Apple keeps focusing on stuff nobody does. Almost nobody uses an iPhone on their guitar. This is not what makes the iPhone excel. What makes the iPhone excel, is the simplicity and usefulness in every day use cases. Simple stuff like sharing vacation photos with your family on the go. Of course, these days that's not really spectacular anymore, but in the end, that's what people want to do! So focus on that in stead of engineers using iPads on windmills or whatever. Nobody can relate to that.

True but they make their money off people who want to be like artist and designers.
They make more money off people who don't want to like an artist or a designer.

Apple already did an "everyday use" kind of iPhone 5S ad around the holidays with the kid creating the home movie. What's wrong with then creating an aspirational ad that goes a bit deeper into its potential?

I mean, is it that unrelatable that:

1. A father would create a short movie with his son
2. Travelers would want to translate a foreign sign
3. A guy at the gym would want to check his heart rate?

Not all ads target the same audience.

lol @ create short monster movies.

They will be short...

Personally, its only for the ad..

Yea, the short movie is a little pretentious but the ad shines on one the iPhones strong points which is music creation. Also I'm sure there are plenty of people like myself who didn't already know that the 5s was a capable heart rate monitor. This is actually one of Apples' better ads.

Just becasue they 'already did it' does not mean they should stop doing it. They should do it even more. The iPhone excels at being super easy to use with everyday tasks. You can't promote that enough.

I know right. The vast majority of people don't use those specialized apps. Makes me laugh when Apple shows an iPad being used to help fly an airplane or helicopter. I will never be a pilot and I will never learn how to play a guitar; I have no desire or need. Apple can make an ad showing a iPhone used by astronauts on the Moon but what good does that do me?
And the regular stuff that people are doing in the ad is more than possible by many Android phones.
Last week I saw a video of a Galaxy S5 being thrown in a pool and washed in a front loading washing machine for a full cycle and completely survive without any damage. That's pretty impressive. This is what normal folks can relate too; a waterproof device. The number one insurance claim for phones is someone dropping them into a toilet. Apple would be better off making the phone waterproof than showing someone dancing and playing the piano with one.

Maybe people that use Apple products have bigger dreams and want to do more with their life

My favorite computer company and my favorite band (well, their song anyway), together at last! :)

When the ad started, I had one of those “Is that ... ?” moments, because I thought it was the bass line - then not - then, oh yeah, it is! :D

Great tune, great band - I had a few things to do later in the evening, put on some phones and some Pixies :D

what about me?

Another iPhone ad exclusive of any humans over the age of 30. Does this mean I have to buy a Blackberry now because I am too old to do cool things with my phone apparently?

It's good because it introduces some much needed energy (via the music & visuals) into the ads. Apple's ads have recently been too low-key. Putting people to sleep watching your ads is never a good thing.

Meaning of "Gigantic"...

Awesome song and I like the ad but I don't think anyone has commented on the meaning of the words and exactly what "gigantic" and "big big love" refer to in the context of the song... and yes it is exactly what you are thinking.

You can google Kim Deal's explanation of the lyrics for yourself.

Starts off strong. It's like oh I get it, a bunch of cool, hip, young "trying to make it" musicians are playing a song together using cool iPhone tech that lets them take their art to a new level.

Then just when they've got your attention they shove a boxer, some people taking a picture of a sign and a kid dressed as Godzilla down your throat and you're just thinking what the F just happened? I thought young musicians were playing a song together? Where did this black suburban family, a boxer and two guys in the dessert just come from and what the hell are they even doing?

No doubt a ***** ad. Cinematography is good but the vision is unclear. Compared to the iPad "your verse" ads, these are absolutely trash.

They're not taking a photo of the sign, they're using the translation app to make it into English so they can see the road is missing...
