So A5 chip is officially has the longest life cycle of all ARM processor Apple ever made. I'm kinda proud since I own a 4S and iPad 2. But also feels a bit sour because it proves Apple being a bit lazy with development

Move on and stop being cheap. iPad 2 for $399 NOW. What the F?!

As I just got a Nexus 7 for development work, and you can get 16GB WiFi for $230, it will be interesting to compare it to the new iPad mini

Nexus 7
-------------
- Resolution: 1,920 by 1,200
- Screen size: 7.02 inches
- Price for 16GB WIFI: $230

Ipad Mini
-------------
- Resolution: 2048x1536
- Screen size: 7.9 inches
- Price for 16GB WIFI: $399

Is IOS worth $170, if you do the same tasks? Read books, browse web, reply to e-mails, watch occasional movies, listen to music?

This isn't an anti-Apple rant: I can tell you that IOS is far better integrated with the computer than the Nexus, if you don't already use Google for everything. I was amazed how primitive "out of the box" the Nexus was regarding syncing.

good comparison. I hate when people go blindly after a product without looking at the competition first.

The Nexus brand is an amazing choice as well. We have both an iPad 3 and Nexus 7 in our household and both get used extensively. Can't go wrong with either product.

So the updated iPad mini gets a price increase of 21 percent compared to the last one. That was pretty unexpected.

When the full sized iPad got retina display, the price stayed the same.

I called it last year. Either they don't do Retina or they raise the price when they do... they were cutting too deep into their margins already with the Mini sans Retina.

Wish it had Touch ID, but Retina is way more important obviously. Probably going to pick one up next month.

A little disappointed no wireless AC, but MIMO should at least help some.

after reviewing this further, i can now see why the cost isn't cheaper.

it's got the same insides as the big brother. the first mini was watered down. this one isn't.

its the same ipad except for screen size. you want the smaller one, you pay less. you want the bigger one, you pay more. you're still getting a suped up ipad

is November 1st that much longer to wait? We've been waiting for this since the first mini came out. The first mini was a good deal at $329 although I am a little miffed that they kept the hardware and only dropped the price 9%.

I wish the price point for the retina mini could have been closer to $329 but considering the hardware boost, $400 isn't bad. In fact, it's a better deal to me than the iPad Air. If they had handled the iPhoneC/S like this, the C would have been much more popular.

If you look on apples site it says the 1st for the iPad air,not the mini. The mini says "later November"

Not coming out Nov. 1st.

iOS 6 Option

Great hardware but I was hoping Tim would announce an iOS 6 option. I'd pay extra for it! 7 SUCKS and the worst part about this is that Tim's in denial! He thinks we all love the changes in 7! Aaahhhhhhhhh :mad::mad: !!!

And that's how they lose market share. Not quite decided to spend $400 on a mini when for $100 more I can get a bigger iPad. Heck, I already have a big iPad, the iPad 2.

I use my iPad for web surfing, emails, books, my niece plays her games on it. Until they release some software that requires a 64bit processor (read: Sibelius for iPad) I think I'm pretty well off with my current device.

Liked the mini for its size and weight, it would cut some 500g off from my backpack load but now at this price... and only 16GB. Undecided.

the new ipad mini is awesome. I just can't find a reason to buy an ipad air which is bigger and has lower ppi for a hundred dollars more.

The price increase sucks, but the weight not being too much more than the original and the retina makes up for it, I think.

Although Apple made a compelling case for those of us who ditched our full sized iPads for the more portable Mini with the Air, I still think 1 pound is a bit too much, so I think I'll be back to the Mini.

Great showing overall, very enthusiastic to get one this holiday.

No thanks! The price of tablets are going down not up. Typical bad Apple move.

yes, so typical that theyre the single best selling tablets in the world -- a product category they re-invented 3 years ago. so typical that theyre not only the most successful tech company in the history of mankind, but they also have all the best consumer satisfaction scores from its customers.

so typical.

To all those wondering why Apple still has both Air and Mini:
It's not all about money. The Mini is still 41% lighter and 25% smaller than the Air. That (especially the weight savings) is still useful enough for some to warrant a separate product line. Plus, the Mini with Retina may well also upsell people to the full sized, full margin Air. The $200 difference between the original Mini is too big to do that

What makes this tablet $170 dollars more expensive than a 16gb Nexus 7?

Apple throw in the Iwork, Ilife, Inumber, Iworks, Imovie etc.. It must be somewhere between 50-75 worth of stuff.. I think Apple is counting on the apps to sell the Ipad. Remember Apple pay the price of holding off the change of display resolution to keep the app implementation easy. So now Apple is ripping the benefit of having a better app population. It seems to be fair.

If 32GB was the base model, I'd consider it. But it isn't worth $500 imo, I think I'll pass.

I liked it

I think Apple has announced two great devices and I am pleased that they see the ipad mini as a different product to the ipad (now ipad air)
I always got confused with iphone5c/5s as they are the same products just with different specs, whereas the ipad and ipad mini were also treated like this but were different products (A5 lagging behind A6X)

I am torn between the two as i want portability but with the ipad air being much lighter it may be worth it for the extra screen size. I wish they announced release date of ipad mini though, Nov 1 is next week, that is exciting.

No apple tv update and no airport express update...aww ;(

It's funny how we go through this every product launch. As long as people buy Apple products they'll charge whatever they want for them. If people think they're a ripoff don't buy them. But I bet any money Apple will announce record sales of the Air and the mini a month from now.

Yes, I think it's foolish to spend $170 more to get a new mini vs the Nexus 7 (or almost $300 more to get a 32GB with LTE). Hell, you can get a 32GB N7 with LTE and still save $50 off the base (new) 16GB wifi-only mini.

For the things I use small tablets for, I don't see the justification.

That said, I'm absolutely certain Apple did the math, and they are confident that people will spend the money, and, historically, they are nearly always proven correct. And, quality-wise, the N7 is nicely made, but nothing at all like the mini. The mini build quality and materials are stunning (however, I like the feel of the N7 better than the cold metal of the iPad).

I'm sure they'll sell like hotcakes.

When the full sized iPad got retina display, the price stayed the same.

No, that's not true, the first retina iPad (iPad 3) was significantly more expensive than the iPad 2. That's when they kept the iPad 2 around and they're still doing that, as the only non-retina iPad. I can't find a source no matter how much I Google it because they only show current prices… But I'm almost certain that the iPad 3 price was higher than the iPad 2 price at launch.

The only thing I think is weird is keeping the iPad 2 for $399. Who's going to buy that when they can get a retina Mini with all the upgrades for the same price?

A lot of cheap people who don't see any difference and just want something in the iOS world
