It's not a flaw, it's a feature: UPS Delivery Intercept

from UPS website (excerpt):

"Industry's Only Web-Based, Automated Interception Service Makes It Easy for Shippers to Reroute Packages Before Delivery...

UPS Delivery Intercept, an automated service that gives customers ultimate flexibility and control by enabling shippers to intercept and reroute packages before they're delivered...

UPS Delivery Intercept is powered by a UPS innovation known as Package Flow Technology, which enables UPS not only to map more efficient routes for drivers but also to flag packages for special handling while they are in the UPS network. In fact, an interception can even be executed after a package is on board one of UPS's familiar brown delivery vehicles....

With UPS Delivery Intercept, shippers have a number of options once UPS intercepts a package, including:

* Return the package to the shipper.
* Redirect the package to a new address.
* Hold the package for delivery on a future date.
* Hold the package for pickup by the consignee."

Wait.. say I manage to pick up a 3GS from the Apple/O2 store here in the UK at say 9am GMT (shouldn't be a problem as there are two O2 stores and an Apple store about 30 seconds apart), that will mean I get it several hours before anyone in the US right? Just thinking aloud.. :p

Why do some have the arrival scan after the receiver request while others don't?

I think the receiver request goes in the system for wherever the package is at that time or will be if it is in the air. The arrival scan still needs to take place so UPS knows for sure that is where the package is and it is accounted for. The ones not showing the arrival scan probably have not been unloaded yet.

You guys seriously didn't expect to get it early?

Well obviously people did or else there wouldn't be over 2800 posts in the tracking thread. I was on the bandwagon myself but Apple pulled the breaks. :(

Both my orders have been updated at 4:02AM and says "Your package is in the UPS system and has a rescheduled delivery date of 06/18/2009.". Before that it said 06/17/2009.

Realistic expectations

If anyone actually believed that a coordinated release date ad campaign by Apple was going to be altered by guys running around in brown trucks wearing brown shorts, then I've got a bridge to sell you.

Could see this action coming a mile and a half away. Mine is still "prepared for shipment" so I didn't really have any hope of seeing it before Friday anyway.

You guys seriously didn't expect to get it early?

Keep in mind the delivery date on the Apple website when we pre-ordered was "Delivers *by* June 19th". Not "on" June 19th", but "by" June 19th. It's a small game of semantics, but it does have a different meaning.

After the disappointing announcements about both MMS and tethering being delayed by AT&T (and seeing that cryptic delivery promise from Apple) I fully expected Apple pre-orders to arrive early in order to:

1) Generate additional buzz for the product when some of them showed up early
2) Further distance Apple from AT&T in consumer's minds, so that the next time a big upgrade comes around people are driven to purchase through Apple channels.
3) Give a big "F U" to AT&T over the MMS and tethering issues (and their crappy network).

UPS just told me tomorrow before 10:30 am

Just got off the phone w/UPS after pulling the 'ol "I'm the receiver and never requested a hold" routine.

The woman told me that UPS isn't "holding" the package but that the "exception" is simply a mechanism that goes into action when a shipment from China comes to the states and they need to allot some extra time to compensate for the customs process.

She then said I'd have my package by 10:30 Thursday morning.

Let us bow our heads in prayer.

I ordered my two 32gb on June 8th, and UPS states a delivery on the 22nd. My tracking shows Louisville as well early this morning. Does that possibly help change my delivery date to the 19th?
