I can understand why they would've wanted to do why they did, and let's face it, we cannot know even 1% of apple's full picture.
AFAICR, Steve said "we hope to get Leopard to you in the spring" (someone correct me if necessary). However, they made the "iPhone in June" statement VERY clear to everyone, i mean EVERYONE. The hit they would've suffered if the iPhone hadn't made it in June would've been huge. PLUS the fact that Cingular are relying on apple to get the phone ready on time.
Unlike OSX, like the iPod, the iPhone is a product for everyone (in the US (atm) with a deep enough pocket), i.e. you don't need a Mac for it. Delaying OSX a couple of months, will only affect those who are keenly waiting for it, i.e. most of th MR community. This delay can only be justified if 10.5.0 is stable and jaw-droppingly good, it better be!
