Quit your whining, folks. Don't you get it?

This is the answer to everyone who's been shouting about how there aren't any big "secret features" left, even though Apple has said so many times, because they would not release 10.5 without the developers having a chance to test/integrate said new features with their products.

How long is reasonable for them to do that?

Three months?

WWDC will see Apple showing EVERYTHING going into Leopard. Developers will get a late-release beta to test and work with. Apple has three months to squash any last-minute bugs that are sure to turn up.

This is not bad news. This is smart thinking.

Damn.
I was waiting to get my Macbook, but forget that.
Screw Santa Rosa.
ASAP, I drive 10 miles east to the nearest Apple Store.
****.

I think that Apple needed to put less output on the iPhone. Sure, it is cool, but I would much rather have it be released in October but have Leopard by June.

This years WWDC better be cool if Leopard will not be a major part of it...

considering that the iPhone is running a stripped down and portable version of OS X? yes.

The iPhone has been in the works for several years. I guess that is enough time to know if you need to hire more developers rather than delay product releases. They didn't _suddenly_ find out that the OS X developers are working now on the iPhone.

The fact that there is outrage is somewhat surprising and entirely amusing. Tiger is sufficient and will continue to be. What's with this rush and willingness/eagerness to upgrade in such haste?!
Well, depends...

I've been waiting for a laptop running 1920x1200 resolution - like forever. Windows laptops have been around for years. Years!

Apple's claim was always that such high res results in too tiny text - which is why they need resolution independence.

Which is built into OS X 10.5 only.

With the October delay it's likely that higher res laptop screens won't happen until November at the earliest. Great!

Maybe I should just buy a windows PC and run Fedora... Sod waiting for Apple to get their high-res act together...

Although this is probably true it sure sounds fishy..

The iPhone utilizes a lot of Leopard technology. If they can get the iPhone out with this technology in June WHY does it take FOUR more months to deliver Leopard ?

Look at this quote:

We now plan to show our developers a near final version of Leopard at the conference, give them a beta copy to take home so they can do their final testing

Leopard betas have been out for a while. 4 more months for testing? Maybe they are going to incorporate a new UI and are giving devs time to update their apps :D  :apple:

So why would a delay be bad for the iPhone?
If Apple pulled resources off Tiger to help out on the iPhone, you can almost be assured Apple and Cingular had delivery performance measures in their agreement that Apple was in danger of missing. That's a pretty common thing in the telco equipment provider world. Clauses like "if you cannot deliver X by date Y, then you forfeit Z payment for each month delay" are common.

Apple is tied to the hip with Cingular on this in the US. Apple delaying iPhone would hurt Cingular's bottom line and it wouldn't be surprising in the least for them to demand compensation for late deliveries by Apple. On the other hand, delaying Tiger just pisses people off but ultimately Apple will still get the revenue.

Not a surprise

The previous leopard beta release, that was released about a week ago was buggy... Really buggy. Like Microsoft buggy, so to me this does not come as a surprise. Actually it was already speculated by the Swedish Macworld magazine.

Bad news

That blows. I'm losing faith in Apple. This isn't going to be good for the stock. All those analysts that said Leopard would be early in April... ya right.

Pre-announcing Leopard what will now be over a year in advance is just plain stupid. In the Apple world, people will stop buying and wait. They should never have announced Leopard at all. Its vaporware. Apple is the new Microsoft.

The fact that the Macworld convention didn't even mention Mac OS X was a huge warning sign. Apple removing "computer" from their name is another big warning sign. They're totally dropping the ball. Ruining their install base when they have the best opporunity, to pursue a phone.

Its already sounding like this phone is more than they can chew. This could signal major problems ahead for Apple.

And for what? A way overpriced phone thats not even 3g. Give me a break.

Meanwhile their computer lineup languishes with absurd prices.

They haven't won many points with me. I'm going to stop recommending Apple until I can figure out what they're trying to be. It doesn't look like they care about computers anymore.

Damn.

****.

I am in the same boat. I will probably just buy a MBP now because Leopard won't be around for awhile.

Rather annoying me thinks!

What about iWork and iLife... can we at least have them?!

It makes sense to call the iLife and iWork's that normally would ship this year: iLife/iWork Leopard. Because Apple has started so many projects that I don't think they will have time to release a new version every year. A new version every OS update is more like it.

This is a very sad day for Apple INC. Remember folks, it's not Apple Computer anymore and this news has proved it beyond any doubt.

Pulling off developers to work on the iPhone indeed, bull.

We knew this was going to happen.

OK so where are all the apologies to those of us who saw this coming a year ago.

We complained that all this diversion into gadgets would eventually cut into the innovation and production of computer hardware and software.

Now Apple admits that they pull people off of Leopard, delay the project intentionally, to speed up the phone development.

Great!

I can't tell you how many people slammed me because I suggested this might be a possibility. I was told that Apple was a big company and that they could do more than one thing at a time.

So I guess Apple Inc can't do it all.

I really wish they were just Apple computer. Who cares about a stupid phone anyway?

just spin

You guys actually believe that bull that Apple is pulling off. "we borrowed developers from OS X to work on the iPhone", give me a break. The fact is, the developer seeds have been bug ridden and that is the real reason for the delay. Technical difficulties are the reason for the delay, given all those "secret" features which I assume are technically challenging ,and well, apparently needs more work.

Definitely this delay is no good news, but I would better wait for a finished product than a semi-finished one.

I truly doubt they shifted any engineers...it is just a way to hype the product that is ready to go and hide the fact that the new OS isn't going to be ready. It sucks any way you spin it, though.

This is terrible news!

Dissapointing for die hard mac fans and as I work for an Apple reseller I'm going to be SERIOUSLY out of pocket.

A huge proportion of potential Apple computer customers have been holding out since JANUARY for Leopard to be released before they buy a system. Our sales of Apple macs has dropped right off, due to the firm believe that Apple will release Leopard in Spring 2007. Even the most skeptical of our customers are now holding out untill June, the latest anyone would believe Apple will release 10.5

As with many sales jobs my wages are based heavily on commision. This is not going to help. I almost feel like I have grounds to sue Apple.

I like how they start off the release with...Hey, the iPhone is great, and oh, by the way, OS X is delayed.

And, let's make sure there are no hypocrites here. Everyone that have MS crap about Vista being delayed should now do the same for Apple.

Or, let's here the complaining about how the Mac is being abandoned.

Make that comparison once Apple delays an OS for over 5 years, until then sit down. MSFT had been working on Longhorn since, I believe, 2001. They scrapped that after a few years and started on Vista and that still took a couple more years to release. Apples and Oranges buddy.

So how many people are still going to wait to buy a new system until Leopard is released?

I bought a new system 3 weeks ago. I questioned it then, now I'm quite pleased.

Dude, I'm gettin a Dell. Vista is already out.

Pull yourself together, man!!
