Not good.

A: Apple was crapping all over Microsoft for the Vista delays. Sure, this is nowhere near as long of a delay (...yet), but they still look ridiculous.
B: I don't believe this. Can a phone really sap that much from Apple's entire fleet of software engineers? This seems somewhat absurd.
C: This further supports the theories about Apple shifting from computing to consumer products. This does not bode well for those of us not in it for the iPods.

And for what? A way overpriced phone thats not even 3g. Give me a break.

Meanwhile their computer lineup languishes with absurd prices.

Well said, exactly what I think about Apple these days.

I was postponing work-related laptop purchase, waiting for Leopard. I think I will just go with the second option now, rather than waiting till October or later. BTW, second option is PC/Linux.

Good News And Bad News

Bad News: Leapord won't come out til October (put $200 in the bank) and in 2008 there will possibly be new MB and MBPs announced

Good News: MB (maybe May) and MBPs are still being upgraded in june. Making them faster, stronger, and be alive longer. FOR THE SAME PRICE. And the iphone is coming in june too.

So to me, I'm getting a Macbook in June. It's still worth waiting until June.

While the initial knee jerk overreaction on here will be that the sky is falling, this isn't going to be anything more than a short-term blip on the radar as far as the company's stock is concerned.

Like it or not, an iPhone delay would have been far more damaging to the company's image than a 4 month delay of Leopard will be. Besides, I'd rather see them get it right with Leopard and not rush it, so this news doesn't really upset me any at all. Waiting until October is not a big deal really, it's not like we're talking about a Microsoft Longhorn/Vista like situation here or anything.

While its easy to say now that the announcement is out, I think this was pretty obvious. I mean, the lack of an event about the secret features, length of time between builds, remaining issues etc. Plus, it would basically have had to go into production in 3 weeks to make a June date.

Let's just hope they don't pull a Vista and have it come out in 2011.

The delay is a total bummer...

But that just means that I have a longer time to save for a spiffier Leopard-sporting Mac

I think this thread set record for posts/second. Started typing on page #3, post ended on page #6.

I feel a lot of dark energy here :D

EDIT: was #5, need that strikethru :)

The only thing is is that I was hoping to buy a MBP alongside Leopard... but now I will have to dish out another 70 dollars for the Family Pack so instead of having it shipped with the MBP. Now I am almost debating weather or not to wait for Leopard... I can see the endless threads in the "buying advice" forum now...

Hey, I don't feel so bad about buying my 24" iMac back in February now. Everyone was saying "you should wait a month or two so you can get Leopard". But I needed the Mac then, and of course I would still be waiting if I had taken their advice. :p

Though I understand that Apple would lose more money by delaying the iPhone, you would think think that a company like Apple could hire some software engineering and QA resources specifically for the iPone and not have to steal from other divisions and roll both out on time...just my opinion.

Now that Sharpton & Jackson don't have Don Imus in their sights anymore, is Steve Jobs next?

Apple has now exposed themselves to the questioning of their priorities to the fundamentals of their business, it's integrity of their commitments, and the ability to chew gum and walk at the same time...

Get a grip, indeed. This is just a four month setback. It's disappointing, sure enough, but it's extremely specious to compare that with Vista, which was delayed for 2+ years and could only be released after all the important under-the-hood improvements had to be abandoned.

And clearly, if Apple really was forced to choose between releasing the iPhone and Leopard on time, they chose wisely in focusing on the iPhone. It would have been a much, much greater PR hit to have to announce delays in shipping the iPhone, plus the iPhone will provide a much greater revenue stream for Apple. Richard Gardner of Citigroup estimated that Leopard would account for $50-75 million in incremental revenue per quarter after Leopard's release. That is just drops in the bucket, especially compared to the new, significantly larger revenue stream the iPhone will generate.

The release of CS3 will spur enough sales of new Macs to more than compensate for the comparatively few people who'll hold out a few months for Leopard.

I really don't see how an OS that (currently) has no known killer new features can force so many people to buy a PC. I guess it's just the people that don't have the money for the premium apple gets for the machines. Oh well.

You guys actually believe that bull that Apple is pulling off. "we borrowed developers from OS X to work on the iPhone", give me a break. The fact is, the developer seeds have been bug ridden and that is the real reason for the delay. Technical difficulties are the reason for the delay, given all those "secret" features which I assume are technically challenging ,and well, apparently needs more work.

Definitely this delay is no good news, but I would better wait for a finished product than a semi-finished one.

That's some pretty dumb misdirection. I'd much rather they delay Leopard to get it working right, than delay Leopard so they can get their dumb cell phone out the door. I think it must be the truth; if they were going to lie about it, they wouldn't make up a lie that would just piss people off so much more than the truth.

It's not that bad.

Being a longtime Windows user making the switch soon, I can't wait to have a stable release of Tiger, the world's greatest operating system.

Ungrateful bastards.

:)

bummer. I could give a crap about iphone. kids and teenagers will be the ones that care about a phone that does more than be a phone. A phone needs to be a phone. I do however care about computer operating systems and the functional value they offer. I am really really sorry to see Apple divert their focus to something like iphone. Very very sad.

Make that comparison once Apple delays an OS for over 5 years, until then sit down. MSFT had been working on Longhorn since, I believe, 2001. They scrapped that after a few years and started on Vista and that still took a couple more years to release. Apples and Oranges buddy.

HA. I knew there would be the one to defend Apple. It is no different.
And, oh, by the way, this is how the 5 years started with MS (they would delay little by little). Not saying this will happen with Apple, but just an example to show it is no different than MS, BUDDY. So stop trying to treat Apple like it is holier than thou.

And, we still haven't seen these secret features. Steve claimed that that they were to prevent others from copying Apple. Yeah, MS is going to be able to cram all these secret features into Vista Service Pack 2.

They haven't won many points with me. I'm going to stop recommending Apple until I can figure out what they're trying to be. It doesn't look like they care about computers anymore.

They are what they always were. A company that is able to bring new technology to the masses through the gift of UI design. The personal computer was just the first tech they bought to the masses. Then it was digital music, and now smart phones.

Steve does not like to rest on his laurels, and probably sees no reason to stop with the personal computer and never bring his gifts to bear on any other technology. Of course the computer is somewhat of a special case, due to the fact of software. There are always new apps to be bought to the masses, e.g. DVD authoring (iLife), video conferencing (iChat), podcasting, etc.

looks like its gonna be all about the iphone in the summer.

i expect the redesigned imac's, displays, ipods, etc. won't be released until the fall now as well.

was looking forward to the new OS but whatever.....they'll get my $ eventually. :p

sell stock fast

Good so I can buy APPL stock for cheap!

Nice spin.;)

Hire some more workers. :p

That doesn't work for a large software project. But now I see the grin.

Although this is probably true it sure sounds fishy..

The iPhone utilizes a lot of Leopard technology. If they can get the iPhone out with this technology in June WHY does it take FOUR more months to deliver Leopard ?

I think that Apple wants to test the newest Intel stuff coming out in the summer.

Now all Mac users can't laugh at Vista's delayed anymore... :p

Vista was delayed for about 3 years. This delay is minor compared to Vista. A few months won't hurt most people.

Listen carefully.

You hear that sound?

That's the sound of the thousands of engineers at Microsoft attempting to suppress their laughter.

I don't think they'll be laughing, especially since Vista had to drop a lot of features, and it took them a long time to get it out. If anything, those who have to use Vista will be cursing more than often!

If Apple is smart, they will release the new hardware (Mac Pros with S-S, Macbooks with Robson) on time and issue minor updates to Tiger to take advantage of the stuff. Then when October rollls around, end users will see a nice improvement.

The good news though is that Leopard will be revealed in June. So it's not like a 6 month wait till we find out the new features.
