The law firms must love this. $500 per hour all round!

Samsung and Google were allowed to basically copy the iPhone and iOS, it was so obvious to everyone.

Since this trial first started I've graduated from college, worked three different jobs, moved three times, bought my starter home, sold my starter home and bought another home, my wife started her own business, and we've had two children—the first of which will be starting school next year. I hardly recognize my life, much less the world we live in today compared to 2011. And Apple is still suing Samsung for the same $1,000,000,000. WAT.
If you thought someone owed you a billion dollars, would you just drop it? Didn't think so.

Funny how Apple thinks it should be full value of the phone.
For Qualcomm they think their royalty should be based on a component, not price of device; even though their signed a contract that says otherwise.

They want whatever works for them, even if it is contradictory.

But surely royalty payments should be decided before a device is released. If you don't have a legal agreement then it's copying/stealing. So pony up the money. The look and feel isn't a component. It's what makes an iPhone an iPhone and their device an iPhoney. Elements existed before the iPhone but Apple put them together in a way that is now standard phone look and feel.

Every Apple fan should thank Samsung.

Can you just imagine......

Samsung applied to Apple for the rights to make a similar device.
Apple either said no, or put so high a cost on the rights, so Samsung just forgot about phones.

Just imagine for one second how far behind a Apple iPhone would be right now, it it were not for Samsung constantly in high end competition with Apple, and being a strong competitor for Apple to keep up with.

Whatever your feelings towards Samsung as a Company, every Apple fan, owe's them so much.

Samsung is not that broke. They’re the most profitable Android OEM. Although they’re not making money as much as Apple on phones, they are far ahead of all other Android OEMs.

Meh. Samsung is doing Apple’s tick-tock cycle now since they’re running out of ideas. Before, every year of Galaxy S had new design. No longer. S7 is the same as S6, and S9 is the same as S8. We’ll see how long Samsung can resist copying the notch.
In the same fashion as iPhone 6, 6s, 7, and 8 are the same? Main difference is the lack of a phone jack on the 7 and 8. I'm glad Android companies have largely avoided copying that "feature", and hope they avoid breaking the $1000 price barrier. Incidentally, what was the price difference between the two phones in the litigation?
[doublepost=1526474524][/doublepost]Here are some spec details for the two phones in comparison. Use your own judgment as to the merits of the litigation:

Samsung has been better as of late about ripping off Apple's design, but at the time it was pretty blatant. I mean, this is how Samsung built who they are today, quickly copying design trends of other companies. I don't blame Apple for going after them, it comes down to principle in their eyes.

LoL what exactly are you talking about?

You say silly things - but this is still happening today. Almost immediately after every new iPhone launch, the same design/features seem to show up on android devices (latest one - android gets a blatant copy of the iPhone's swipe gestures).

Not sure I agree with the original settlement amount, but you can't go to court asking for exactly what you want. Same as when buying a house - you always offer slightly lower than you're willing to spend, as if you offer what you're willing to spend first time they'll try to negotiate ;).

Yeah, those oblongs with round corners are so copied.....
And the slide to unlock patent I do believe has unsurprisingly been made void, considering another phone was shown with it before the iPhone existed!

Most of the patents Apple gets it should never be awarded due to prior art, theirs a reason most of its cases internationally collapsed against competitors, but succeeded in the US.
Apple were also beaten with he Notch I do believe by Android, just, like they were beaten with 3D Touch and on dual lens cameras.
The iPhone if I remember didn’t even have an App Store at launch, yet competitors at the time did, although they were rubbish.

But theirs no point arguing against the fan base on here as most hasn’t a clue about other devices in the world, because they weren’t all sold in America.

As I said, the majority of cases Apple bought against rivals internationally failed.

Did you guys miss the first paragraph, second sentence of the article? Samsung was found GUILTY of violating Apple’s patents.

I’m pretty confident if any company was found guilty in court of violating patents you owned, you’d want your damn money ASAP.
yep and then the Supreme court reduced the damages.

If this suit was filed today it would have been invalidated and thrown out of court. Apple got a home country verdict for rounded corners and oblong shape.

Apple is spending more in lawyers fees than it will ever recover from the tainted verdict in the first trial.

It seems funny that the legal stance they took with Samsung....they reverse themselves in the suit with Qualcomm.

Just stop this nonsense already.

I think it's a bit naive to sit here and act like Samsung didn't rip off Apple's design at this time. Today, things have changed and Samsung phone's have their own specific design language (great hardware too). I don't think it's necessarily about rounded corners or specific technologies, but no other phones looked like an iPhone when it came out. Then Samsung released phones that were direct copies of Apple. Whether or not it's valid in court, I don't really care, but I think anyone could look at those and say that Samsung copied the design. I don't blame them necessarily though, they did what they had to.

I am saying that as of late Samsung has changed their design approach and have been releasing phones that don't mimic Apple's designs. Was that really tough to understand?
No you clearly said they are better at copying Apple now.

Kind of funny to see the shift in argument over this topic as compared to most topics of late. It's back to "Apple vs. other companies" rather than "Cook-era Apple vs. Jobs-era Apple". It took a topic originating from the Jobs-era to bring back the old "Apple vs. everyone else" debates. I find that to be healthier than the internal squabbles of the last several years.

Sorry for the confusion. When I said they are better, I meant they aren't ripping off their design anymore.
Well that is not how it sounds.
Honestly I don't even remember when is the last time Samsung copied Apple's design. Only Galaxy S comes in mind.
Also stating that what Samsung is today is thanks to the fact that they copied Apple is a blatant exaggeration.

Yea, it's been a while and they have definitely been better. It's not really an exaggeration though, without copying Apple they likely wouldn't be the player in the smartphone game that they are today. Take a look at this link (132 pages) and you can see app to app how they basically stole all of their designs from Apple. Yes, it was a while back, but it's what this discussion is about.

So we agree VirneTx should continue trying to get the over half a billion dollars it was awarded after Apple was found to have willingly and knowingly stolen their patents right?

Just like VirneTx wants their money from Apple...

In a way, it's good that Apple sued Samsung because this process weeded out a lot of fraudulent Apple patents that have since been invalidated by the USPTO.

- pinch to zoom
- slide to unlock
- autocorrect
- bounce back/rubber banding

Anyone have the complete list?

Apple's original goal with this trial was to gain a monopoly on a rectangular touch screen phone so they could be the only company on the planet that could manufacture such a device. If Apple had their way the iphone would be the only smart phone with a touch screen on the market.

With Siri's state of "smarts", it would be hard to call it a SMART phone in 2018. Or even a couple years ago. Apple displays greed in such ways, that it truly amazes me that people support the company. Apple literally contradicts "bang for your buck"

I am lost here. Samsung is initiating this retrial. VirneTx was awarded a payout from Apple. What is the issue? Just trying to understand why you keep mentioning VirneTx.
