This is so ridiculous. There are vehicles that take more design cues from other makers and this is hardly an issue. Samsung's Galaxy S is a rectangle with rounded corners, a screen and bezel. Get over it Apple. You didnt invent that, and a shape is hardly IP.

With Siri's state of "smarts", it would be hard to call it a SMART phone in 2018. Or even a couple years ago. Apple displays greed in such ways, that it truly amazes me that people support the company. Apple literally contradicts "bang for your buck"

Value is different for everyone. What is valuable to some may not be valuable to you at all. Apple may not always be the best when it comes to certain areas (Siri, for example), but they still offer probably the best all around package when it comes to selling to the masses. At least that's how I see it.

Yea, it's been a while and they have definitely been better. It's not really an exaggeration though, without copying Apple they likely wouldn't be the player in the smartphone game that they are today. Take a look at this link (132 pages) and you can see app to app how they basically stole all of their designs from Apple. Yes, it was a while back, but it's what this discussion is about.

So you ignore Samsung's entire history as a tech company(a leader in design, manufacturing and innovation) and claim that a few software design guidelines from 11 years ago is the thing that made Samsung what it is today? LoL

It looks more like: we are doing this thing wrong, we should change it/improve it.
Don't act like competitor companies never study each others products and try to find ways to improve.
I mean look at the improvements apple made in recent years: 4K video recording, higher color gamut screens, higher mega pixel camera sensors, dual cameras, wireless charging, fast charging, water resistance, stereo speakers etc. We saw all this stuff on other phones before we saw them on iphones and they were basically proven concepts that Apple implement in order to improve their phones.

Well, it's not just software to be fair. Take a look at any of their phones prior to the iPhone and you can see that everything changed (not just for them, for the whole industry) after the iPhone was released. Now, could they have taken their own path and become a major player that way? Of course, that was definitely possible, but they didn't. Only in recent years have they been coming up with original designs (hardware and software) and really coming into their own.

If anything, Apple borrowed from Samsung and others before the iPhone 3GS came out. Now, the iPhone X is borrowing from the 2015 Galaxy S6. Only thing Apple did differently is put a notch in the display so it wouldn't look like a 100% blatant copy of the phablet that Samsung popularized.

To the masses? Have you seen the global market share? Or the break down of each country/region? It seems that the masses prefer Android to iOS, by a landslide. And I can almost bet it isn't just because of how poor Siri is in comparison to the actual SMART assistants, but because of the openness of the platform, and how users are not constricted and limited to basic functionality. Especially when you slap on a high price tag for less features.

They actually did that many years ago when they changed their design approach and have been releasing phones that don't mimic Apple's designs. The Galaxy S2 was the first notable step.
So basically your argument is invalid.
Only in recent years have they been coming up with original designs (hardware and software) and really coming into their own.
Not in recent years. It started with the Galaxy S2.

It's not an argument as design is subjective. The S2 looks like an iPhone to me still. For me, only in recent years have they come into their own when it comes to design. I understand that you don't agree.

I am not going to get into the market share discussion. I am aware that all of the hundreds of different Android manufacturers/phones add up to a larger market share than iOS. I would certainly hope this is the case considering that the majority of these phones are free/low cost. My only point is that Apple still remains a very popular brand that sells millions of devices to millions of happy customers. For those customers, they appreciate the value that Apple brings. For others like yourself, you may not value the same things. The iPhone still sells more than any other phone quarter after quarter, so yes, to the masses.

Lol, how old are you? Seems like a lot has happened in your life in 7 years!
Hah, yeah, this trial thing just brought back a lot of memories of me finishing up my last year in college since it was all over the news and made me think about all that has happened to me since. I'm in my early 30s. I went back to school at an actual university after dropping out of community college because I was bored and distracted by a really crappy home life living with an abusive family. I was also the first in my family lineage to graduate from college so it took me a while to figure everything out on my own and without much financial aid. So I feel as though 14 years were compressed into 7. Maybe that's why it seems like a lot? It's like my life was on hold for a long time, I was stuck in the mud, and then suddenly I was unleashed and flying free. So I always tell younger people that if they keep plugging along working hard and eliminating distractions that things will eventually work out. I had to discipline myself. I'm always looking at where I'm flawed and trying to improve. Some people just have to put in more effort and that's life. So in my own household I've established the motto "Work hard and be nice." and that's what I try to teach my kids. I'm not perfect but I work at it. Also it's really important to make a budget, lol, and when your income increases try to put most of it into savings/investments so you can't increase your cost of living. I kind of want to write a book called "How to not suck at life by a guy who used to" because the way my life has changed is staggering.

I KNEW you would somehow bring in the low cost/free argument, regardless how pathetic it is. Apple has cheap devices too, if you didn't notice. Free devices from some providers. So your "point" is moot at best.

With that being said, what does overly expensive devices do for the average customer? Unless you have Apple stocks, it doesn't benefit you, as a customer. If anything, Apple is milking you and many others.

What I find interesting from your comment was this
For those customers, they appreciate the value that Apple brings. For others like yourself, you may not value the same things.
What value does Apple bring to the table besides limited software/hardware, overly expensive products, dumb assistant, etc? You gotta admit, myself and others have proven you wrong countless times, that Google has better privacy than apple, better assistant, etc. You may have your opinion, but plenty of people have provided factual data.

LoL actually in recent years they have been designing better looking hardware than Apple.

Well it's a fair argument to bring up. I would hope that a ton of free/cheap phones offered by hundreds of manufacturers would have the most market share. Well it depends what type of phone you are looking for. A top of the line Samsung is around $800-$1,000, the same as Apple. For each individual, they need to decide if the features at that price point warrant the price. This is no different for Apple or any other phone manufacturer. What value does Apple bring me? I find that Apple provides me with the best combination of performance, security, privacy, ecosystem, apps, and customer support. I can only speak for myself in this area, but clearly you are not an Apple fan. I have to ask then, why be such a regular on an Apple-centric forum? You have every right to be, but I just wouldn't find myself on Android forums day and night.

Well design is subjective. Nothing wrong with you preferring Samsung designs, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's "better looking" hardware.

Just drop it.
Instead of spending all the money on Inside and Outside Counsel maybe you could throw a couple of bucks at Siri?
....Just a thought....

this isn't a money thing. this is a punish Samsung to reduce the competitions ability to function thing.

If you can get apple devices for cheap or free, then why be one sided against Android? Ever heard of the iphone se? It can be found for free through many providers. These free iphone se's aren't making the "masses" or taking a chunk of the market share away from Google.

I personally find it humorous to read comments like this, because when you use their same argument against them, they switch the goalposts/go off topic. I like technology in general. Regardless if it is something I will/wont buy. I love competition, because it makes the market a better place. It just so happens to seem that Android doesn't really have any competition going by the "masses" or the feature set. I would have imagined this would make Android stagnant due to lack of competition, but Google has shown it can only get better and better with their recent conference. But anyways, it doesn't seem like this conversation will go anywhere, except past the goal posts...

You are just grasping for straw right now.

The iphone looks like a relic next to samsung's design.

Well I think it would be much more fair comparing to Apple's updated design (iPhone X). Design isn't everything for me when it comes to a phone, but I respect your choice here.

It's not a one sided argument. Apple's low cost entry (1 phone, $349) does not equate to the hundreds of cheap/free devices on the Android side. Honestly, it makes no difference to me if Android owns 90% of the market. I guess the iPhone just isn't a popular device with the masses? That's fine if you think so. To be fair, this discussion began around perceived value and how different people value different things when it comes to a platform choice. The goal posts were moved many times on your end to fit some kind of argument that I didn't even bring up. My ONLY point was that just because you don't value what Apple brings to the table, doesn't mean that it's somehow wrong for others to. The same goes for Android. I am clear that it's not for me, but I have no problem with those that choose Android. I can certainly see the value there, it's just not for me. It's nothing personal.

This isn’t Apple doing it. Samsung complained, the courts ordered a new hearing on the amount.

I agree, Samsung has a history of dragging things on threw the courts as a way to make the company they are ripping off run out of money, they should just accept defeat for once as Apple has plenty of money to fight on.

Samsung needs to stop ripping off other companies, they are even ripping off dyson these days and destroyed Sharp I think it was by copying their screen tech and selling it at a lower price and dragged it on threw the courts until sharp ran out of money to continue, Samsung wins by default.

Yes, put some more energy in R&D. This is more necessary than that ancient battle it has already lost imo.

In the same fashion as iPhone 6, 6s, 7, and 8 are the same? Main difference is the lack of a phone jack on the 7 and 8. I'm glad Android companies have largely avoided copying that "feature", and hope they avoid breaking the $1000 price barrier. Incidentally, what was the price difference between the two phones in the litigation?
Headphone jack? Google, HTC, Motorola, and even Xiaomi have ditched it on their flagships. As for price, Samsung Galaxy Note line is effectively in the ~$1k category with its $950 price tag.

Back to my point about Samsung, yes, Samsung is running out of ideas that they’re not doing a new design yearly, just like Apple. That’s what I stated, so what’s your point?
[doublepost=1526491014][/doublepost]

I thought people want Steve Jobs-style management. This lawsuit was started back when Steve was at the helm.

For a long time they said Apple TV was their hobby. Not so. Their real hobby is lawsuits.
It certainly isn’t hardware or software anymore... which way Apple is heading? I’m totally lost... Hope wwdc 2018 gives a glimpse or clue.

One focus is for certain: shareholders and money.

Samsung is no stranger in copying. Just ask any Japanese electronics company. Apple just happened to be one big boy who stood up and got the media attention.

I mean look at how corrupt Samsung management is. Of course, they got beaten at their own game with the more ferocious copycats, the Chinese.
