i don't think you understand how business works. Pettiness rarely "works."

There are plenty of companies that copy Apple, Xiaomi being one of the bigger offenders. This isn't just about samsung, this is about proving that litigation can protect your intellectual property. If it can't than well, that's the world some people want to live in.
Many companies copy each other...maybe add little bit of this and that...wah la....a new product.

Your translation reveals a lack of insight and understanding. Not all patent suits are equally justified. Virnetx are patent trolls who make nothing. Apple have a very long history of investing in and releasing world changing hardware and software.

Actually I am just not blinded by unwavering loyalty and my opinion is based on facts and reality unlike those who argue for Apple being paid when someone steals a patent of theirs while in the same breath arguing that Apple shouldn’t pay when busted for stealing a patent.

If Apple sold cars they would sue other manufacturers for making a box on wheels with steering wheel.

Thought Tim Crook said he was over petty patent trolling and lawsuits but I guess he needs another source of income after the battery throttling to force users to upgrade was exposed.

I couldn't care less about this. Samsung leapfrogged Apple in design in less then 2 years. Can't wait until Samsung charges them 300$ for every iPhone. I'm sure Apple will turn around and sell it to you for 2k$ "Super duper Retina."

There was nothing like a keyboard-less, touch full-screen pocket computer/phone with apps before Apple made the iPhone. Apple spent years and a huge amount of their money coming up with a revolutionary design, figuring out how it would work and how to make it.

There were touchscreen models from Nokia (e.g. 7710), but with resistive touchscreen and few apps.

Samsung would have to make a thousand phones and sell them for a million each (and that doesn't take into account the cost to build those thousand phones) just to pay off this debt!

The lawyers are loving this.
[doublepost=1526444298][/doublepost]
I have nothing to say to that except that it encourages companies to do illegal things, you know, to live the American Dream ;)
Mate, none of them need much encouragement, if you haven't noticed...

Honestly, they don't look that similar. Unless your almost completely blind, theres enough difference to tell them apart at a glance.

Apple doesn't own black rectangles.
We can say that now. Back then, the lay consumers do think they are similar. The aim is to create similarity and feel of the iPhone.

We can easily look at Android skins. There’s a reason most Chinese OEM skins (Vivo, Oppo, Huawei, Xiaomi, etc) follows iOS style home screen with icons instead of Google’s app drawer. And before you say Samsung is Korean, LG’s skin also follow iOS style. It’s all to create the similarities with the iPhone.

Samsung is not that broke. They’re the most profitable Android OEM. Although they’re not making money as much as Apple on phones, they are far ahead of all other Android OEMs.

Meh. Samsung is doing Apple’s tick-tock cycle now since they’re running out of ideas. Before, every year of Galaxy S had new design. No longer. S7 is the same as S6, and S9 is the same as S8. We’ll see how long Samsung can resist copying the notch.

Did you guys miss the first paragraph, second sentence of the article? Samsung was found GUILTY of violating Apple’s patents.

I’m pretty confident if any company was found guilty in court of violating patents you owned, you’d want your damn money ASAP.

And you apparently missed the part shortly after that where Samsung has already paid $548M, and that the Supreme Court sent the case back to the US Court of Appeals . So Samsung will possibly be getting $$ back from Apple.

[doublepost=1526451539][/doublepost]
Apple will never see that money. This trial will go on forever. Apple may as well give up at this point.
Are you talking about the $548M that Samsung has already paid Apple?

Where are the Steve Jobs evangelists now? Jobs even berated Bill Gates for stealing Macintosh GUI to make Windows. And of course, who forgot the thermo nuclear comment on Google? If Steve Jobs we’re still on the helm, Apple would’ve been more lawsuit happy.

Among other similarly ridiculous things. ("Slide to unlock...")

You say silly things - but this is still happening today. Almost immediately after every new iPhone launch, the same design/features seem to show up on android devices (latest one - android gets a blatant copy of the iPhone's swipe gestures).

Not sure I agree with the original settlement amount, but you can't go to court asking for exactly what you want. Same as when buying a house - you always offer slightly lower than you're willing to spend, as if you offer what you're willing to spend first time they'll try to negotiate ;).

I hope Samsung loses, it is about time this bullying company gets punished.

Samsung has a past history of ripping companies off and dragging it out in the courts until the company they are ripping off runs out of cash, thus time it’s a company that has all the cash in the world and to Apple its not realy about the money but the principal of it.

Samsung clearly made Android to look like iOS and designed the phone with rounded corners and speaker grill so it would a lot like the iPhone, they copied it as much as possible and hope that they could get away with it just as they have all ways done.
LoL the reality distortion field is strong with this one.

Samsung's entire smartphone business is predicted on ripping off Apple's designs. There was nothing like a keyboard-less, touch full-screen pocket computer/phone with apps before Apple made the iPhone. Apple spent years and a huge amount of their money coming up with a revolutionary design, figuring out how it would work and how to make it. They bet the company on it. It was a huge gamble that everyone said was doomed to failure. Less than a year later Samsung's got their own b-grade phone so closely copied on Apple's designs that they look and behave almost the same. That's what this lawsuit is about. Samsung should design their own damned phone, or else pay Apple for having designed it.
You know I'm sure there was actually. I had a Nokia Communicator and the Sony P800/P900 but there were a couple of others I think that took the game there or thereabouts.

EDIT: Ok, so a Google search popped up one of the ones I remember, (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_7710), and there were more. XDA?

funny how people do this...
[doublepost=1526432523][/doublepost]People quickly forget the deck that samsung made on apple design and how they should extract that for the galaxy.
People forger all the time and you can blame them especially when 2012-2018 Galaxy phones look nothing like a corresponding iphone both from a hardware perspective and a software perceptive.
Also the claim that what Samsung is today it's because they copied Apple is quite groundless.

Android P gestures are a blatant copy of WebOS's gestures and multitasking interface. Which is not surprised taking in consideration that WebOS's lead software designer currently works at Google.
Also the gesture controls on Android P are implemented differently. You have an universal back button which you have to tap to go back and you have to tap on a button to go to the home screen, two things which don't exist on the X.

Anyway I will be interesting to see what will iOS 12 look like. The only way foreword for Apple is to copy features from Android, things like the notifications grouping, audio slider interface would be a much welcomed improvements.

LoL let's put things into perspective. The S8 had the best design of 2017(close to it anyway, as it was praised by every single reviewer) .
It's way harder to reinvent something that it's already that good. It's simple logic.
By comparison Apple kept the same boring and uninspiring iphone 6 design for 4 generation. They only changed some elements on the back of the phones and that is it, the front remained with exactly the same look and same huge bezels for years.
I remember the easiest way to notice if somebody had an iphone 7 was to look for the missing headphone jack.

Yeah because of Chinese people buying habits(one of the reasons iphone x was successful in China).
But it's Android so you are not limited to the stock home screen lock, you could make any of these phones look like stock Android if you want to.
And things are changing with Chinese OEMs. Not long ago Xiaomi said they want to better understand the buying requirements and habits of Europeans and how they are different in comparison to the Chinese ones(this is part of their expansion plans). Because of this they are willing to choose the Stock Android route(seen the Mi A1 officially launched in Europe last year).

If Samsung had asked to license these technologies, Apple could have said no and these Samsung phones wouldn't even have ever existed or so differently that they would have sold so fewer products.

So for once I think Apple is right. FULL VALUE.

Steve Jobs famously said, "And we've patented the hell out of it" to applause.
If Tim Cook backs down to outright theft, then the little respect I'll have left for him will be gone and Steve Jobs will roll over in his grave.

Samsung has been better as of late about ripping off Apple's design, but at the time it was pretty blatant. I mean, this is how Samsung built who they are today, quickly copying design trends of other companies. I don't blame Apple for going after them, it comes down to principle in their eyes.

Out of curiosity, what technologies do you even speak of? Since when is a rounded corner considered "technology"?

On a side note, I wonder what is the flavor of the day for some of the folks sippin' on the Apple Kool-aid.
Someone should patent the shoe, and sue every single shoe manufacturer. Now take this example, replace the word shoe, with literally any possible tangible/intangible thing you can possibly think of. This is Apple logic for you guys.

Corporations are "legal organisms" that have lifespans longer than human lives. It would not matter if this took 100 years to litigate as long as the companies do not go bankrupt.

Since this trial first started I've graduated from college, worked three different jobs, moved three times, bought my starter home, sold my starter home and bought another home, my wife started her own business, and we've had two children—the first of which will be starting school next year. I hardly recognize my life, much less the world we live in today compared to 2011. And Apple is still suing Samsung for the same $1,000,000,000. WAT.
Lol, how old are you? Seems like a lot has happened in your life in 7 years!
