the grey look is soooo much nicer, hopefully when they redesign the imacs (should be this coming year, sicne they are what 5 years old?) then maybe we will see it

It's a beautiful system, but that price tag is why I ended up jumping ship to a Ryzen 7 for less than half the price.

Having previously owned a fully loaded top of the line iMac, I simply couldn't justify buying this one. You have Mac Pro hardware cramped in a thin case, behind a large expensive panel. Once this thing is out of warranty, it's going to cost a lot to repair. It's overall a poor investment, unless you're a big business which doesn't care about these things.

The problem is, when you spend that kind of money and say in two years IF Intel releases a new incredible Xeon, or IF AMD releases a killer new GPU, you CANNOT upgrade the damn machine! Forget that!!! It is utter insanity, that is why I say Timmy is taking some good drugs, totally trippin'!;)

Look at people with their 2010 Mac Pros that they can UPGRADE and are killing it in Geekbench scores. Some of those 2010's rival todays top computers.

in two years from now Intel to release a killer new Xeon?? hahahah compare to what we will have now...maybe in 2 years we Intel will have a 10% faster xeons :D

Which begs the question...what is the intended market for this system? It is priced like a professional workstation while not meeting the needs of many users in the market for a professional workstation. The iMac Pro is the answer to a question nobody asked.
trust me, there are customers for it

I am just throwing out examples, and that is why I capitalized "IF" but surely AMD will release a way better GPU in 2 years, and guess what...you are stuck with VEGA 2017. I know Intel is just as bad as Apple these days, constantly delaying new CPU's.

I don't get it either. The thing looks awesome right now And if I had excessive cash I would totally get one. But it seems like it will be obsolete pretty quick.

At least with the Trash Can you can throw it out and you still have your monitors.

I don't understand this machine, at all. Zero upgradeability, literally none. I can (barely) understand this mentality in a MacBook Pro as you want to have it thin an light, but what's the reason you cannot even upgrade the RAM in this? Add a back panel, let us add more ram and an additional stick of NVMe storage.

Obsolete is perhaps the wrong word. This computer will work fine for YEARS. And there is a class of professional users who could use this machine to work and be fine with it for many years. Then when the time comes they can try to sell it for a few bucks.

This notion that when ever a new processor is released a product magically becomes obsolete really needs to go away.

I am just as baffled as you guys. Seriously just shaking my head right now, literally.

I don't want that riccohulous mouse with the charge port on the bottom. Nor do I want that horrible no travel flat keyboard.

-Mechanical keyboard snob.

Not the processors anymore, since very marginal performance gains come every few years, but the GPU's which are being used for more and more things now. So you get VEGA 2017 GPU's in this machine. When AMD releases a killer GPU in 2 years, you cannot upgrade to it. Say it has some features that would really benefit the people this machine is aimed at, they cannot upgrade the GPU.

I was thinking more about video cards. Lots of new GPU tech coming down the pipe that will pass this iMac by.

Everyone is going to wide screen and Apple is sticking with tall screen... SMH. I would've shelled out for an iMac with a 34-40" wide screen!

I can understand Apple not making it upgradeable: 3rd party components (memory, CPU, GPU) might not be up to Apple's standards, and ruin Apple's brand in some people's eyes. Plus, upgrades would seriously cut into Apple's profits. Can't have that! Shareholders would get angry! I hate it, but I understand it.

The people whose use these kind of computers, they use it for work and make money. It is a workstation. They don't just render (refresh) facebook in Safari between two RAM upgrade. If the computer does not perform well, they buy a new one. Maybe you would say that is a waste of money but it is actually not, you waste time and because of the, you lose money.

hmm, nowadays i exchange my macs from 3 years to 3 years ...so my point is, you already know all of this..so if you are ok with this, and you already know you will change your mac after 2-3 years...you can buy this easily, if you want to exchange the gpu, ssd, maybe even the Ram, you have to wait for the modular mac pro :)

Apple has lease options for these computers for business. 2 or 3 years terms.

Big post houses will buy these things and keep them until they fail.

I know several well regarded audio /mastering engineers and video editorsthat were using XP and/or Panther until 2015.

Most working pros don’t ungrade often. They want something that they set up and works. Most even air gap (disconnected for all internet) to prevent any update messing up theirs work flows / plug ins, etc.

Pro want something that works they way they want, not constant fiddling. But to each their own,

It's tempting, but I'm planning to drop loads of money on mac pro. iMac Pro looks great...but I gotta wonder how effective is the thermal control and if it's going to be user's upgradable....i assume not though.

How are they cooling all that hardware with such few vents? Does Apple ever learn from their mistakes?

1. speculation -> High rate of airflow and radiation from the aluminum back. Possible electronic noise canceling.

2. not speculation -> No.
