Considering how much Gurman leaks “private” information about Apple, I’m surprised they communicate with him publicly/on the record.

It's an interesting thing to ponder.

Do we think Apple would prefer a perfect world, where there is no news and no talk or rumours in the media about Apple products.
Other than a bit of chatter a few weeks before and after an Official Apple Keynote, it's media silence, with no Apple news whatsoever around the world.

Whilst that may be the message Apple wants to to think, I'm pretty sure they would hate not being talked about all year and would drip feed little stories/rumours into the media to keep them being talked about all year long.

So perhaps that's what they are actually doing now, they are just pretending they don't.

Hopefully Elon will keep driving this until we get alternative app stores on iOS. Imagine owning a computer where you could only purchase software from one website... it's completely ridiculous, but too many buy into the security garbage that Apple uses as its firewall.
We have multiple iOS stores already, but I haven't met anyone who uses one, yet...

What an odd reply. Maybe you don't agree with what is happening regarding the EU and Apple, but at least there's a coherent argument that you could agree or disagree with.

What is Musk even complaining about here? It's completely unverifiable.
Looking at the charts, here in Germany:
  • ChatGPT is in #9 in essential apps.
  • Perplexity is #10 in this weeks popular apps, KI-Wohnungsdesign (AI Livingroom designer), YAZIO (AI calorie counter) and Picsart are apps that are labelled as "AI" in the top 50.
  • ChatGPT tops the most downloaded free apps, with YAZIO and Perplexity coming in the top 20
  • Claude is #7 in popular apps, followed by Microsoft Copilot
  • CahtGPT is #9 in Must Have, followed by Perplexity at #12
  • The curated "Our Favourites" list doesn't have an AI tools, but does have Coursiv, which is intended to teach users to use AI effectively, covering 25+ AI tools.

Odd to see so many people who were defending EU and attacking Apple over unfair App Store practices suddenly come to defend Apple's practices when Elon is attacking Apple. It's just so blatantly obvious objectivity went out the window a long time ago LOL.
Great comment.

There is a small difference though.

The EU exists to get a better deal in the European market place for 400 million consumers.

Musk exists to get a better deal for himself, and his noxious far-right views. No one should want him treated fairly.

That is not accurate. iOS supports HTML 5 based web apps since the day it launched. That is a 100% open standard and common for all. All tools are freely available to all developers. The standard for compliance is not set by Apple, but buy an independent 3rd party.

If you want to use Apple's proprietary development tech, like Xcode, Swift, SwiftUI, etc, only then you need to go through App Store. And why would you twist Apple's hands to give their proprietary tech? What if they give up on it and just support the open standard?

You define an iPhone like it's a computer. But it's up to Apple to define what the product they are selling is, and the users who buy it to decide to buy it. I as a user, do not want an iPhone turned into a computer. I want it to be locked by Apple with no way to accidentally install unapproved apps. We have children. We want App Store to curate and not promote Apps that contain adult content. That's why I bought an iPhone. Why would you want to ruin the only company that promotes curation and safety. This is a lot bigger concern for society, than your ability to side load apps, especially when there is Android for people like you.

As someone who has owned three Tesla 3s, it's embarrassing how his name is brand associated.

The Tesla Board need to remove him.
His continued actions harms the brand.

Apple today responded to Elon Musk's claims that the App Store favors OpenAI's ChatGPT app, telling Bloomberg's Mark Gurman that the App Store is "fair and free of bias."

iOS-App-Store-General-Feature-Desaturated.jpg

Yesterday, Musk threatened to sue Apple, and claimed that the company was violating antitrust rules by favoring ChatGPT over other AI apps like Grok. "Apple is behaving in a manner that makes it impossible for any AI company besides OpenAI to reach #1 in the App Store, which is an unequivocal antitrust violation. xAI will take immediate legal action," Musk said.

Musk did not provide any evidence or further information on Apple's alleged antitrust violations, but he seems to have missed that AI app DeepSeek hit number one on the App Store charts earlier this year. ChatGPT continues to be in the number one position on the free apps chart, with Grok in the number five spot. X is number 32.

Musk also claimed that Apple "refuses" to put the X or Grok apps in the App Store's "Must Have" section, where ChatGPT is listed. Grok has recently been updated with adult-themed content that includes celebrity deepfakes, and it regularly makes headlines for its questionable Musk-guided responses to queries.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman responded to Musk's claims of Apple favoritism by pointing out that Musk has manipulated X algorithms to benefit himself and his companies.

Apple is already facing an antitrust lawsuit levied by the U.S. Department of Justice, and it is still appealing a recent ruling in the Apple vs. Epic Games lawsuit that required major App Store changes.

“Fair and free of bias” MY ASS.

Just go to the app store right now, and see the same apps/games promoted on its main page over and over again, like Roblox and Clash Royale.

And by the way, I am still waiting, after all these years, to be able to search for non-IAP apps. No can do.

If App Store listing is "fair and free of bias." Apple should make the selection algorithm public.
I do not trust anything from Musk but at some point there should be a selection of apps to put in the main page, there is also some sorting, and many things that need to be decided. Being there or not is just a question of earning millions, so I'm pretty sure these spots are subsidized.

Being objective is not seeing the world thru black and white glasses. You seem to only like certain colors depending on what's being painted on. Either way, it's a terrible analogy.
Being objective means considering each case separately, instead of saying that because Apple is a jerk in one situation, they must be a jerk in all situations.

In this case, Musk is so clearly wrong that it’s funny. Just like his threats to sue companies that do not give him money to advertise on his platforms. That doesn’t mean I endorse everything Apple does on the App Store, far from it. It also doesn’t mean Musk is always wrong. I do reserve the right to point out stupidity when I see it, regardless of source. If certain people pop up more than others in that spotlight, the light is not the problem.

That was an absolute genius move that was.

Absolutely ghastly trinket and vague long term manufacturing promise so they can the push the boat out until Trump is gone.
Genius, and illegal in every single banana republic I can think of. But somehow not US.

Ridiculous! It is clearly biased toward certain apps.

You're right. It is biased. Towards popular apps. Which is the point of a ranking system.

I think it's quite amazing it's ranked so high considering the controversies around it.

have you tried liking more popular things? It might hurt your bias a little less.

This and many other posts in here ad nothing to the topic of discussion. Free reign to just post hate on Elon I guess.
Yeah, right next to the hate on Tim Cook.

That’s a snowflake argument. People post snarky comments on people they dislike all the time. The site doesn’t suddenly become biased because some rant is directed towards someone you happen to like. How about YOU actually add something meaningful to the discussion, instead of ranting about other people’s rants?
