Apple, make a laptop half the size as mbp and name it whatever you want. That's what I want. Stop wasting time to change people's minds by ads. That's low.
I'm hoping the "MacBook Air replacement" will also come in 11", like the now-discontinued 11" MacBook Air.

Since five new model numbers have been discovered (A1931, A1932, A1988, A1989 and A1990, indicating two distinct ranges), maybe A1931 and A1932 represent two screen sizes?

This is a continual annoyance, inflexibility of putting media on iOS devices. Android has this better, you can plug them in and copy media onto device. Same goes with emailed media, you cant store them on the iOS device directly from email or web browser - only PDFs and eBooks so far have this capability in iOS
I have 52GB of media stored on my iOS devices. Most of it is stuff I ripped from YouTube. The only way to get this media on an iOS device is via desktop iTunes. Desktop iTunes is also the only place metadata can be changed. There is no way of accessing this media from the Files app. If I wanted to post something on social media I’d have to do it from a laptop/desktop where I can access the file system. A user should be able to access any files locally stored on their iOS device. I’m assuming media purchased from iTunes or downloaded Apple Music tracks have some sort of DRM so they’re not shareable anyway. So I don’t see what the issue is and why this stuff is sandboxed.

Since I got an iPad I rarely use my MBP anymore, but it will never? replace my Studio Computer.

Apple today shared four new 15-second ads highlighting the portability of the iPad for education and travel.

The ads, titled Travel Simply, Organized Notes, Paperless Paperwork, and All Your Stuff, depict the iPad as a space-saving replacement for textbooks in the classroom, paperwork in the office, and a laptop during a flight.

Many of the comparisons are exaggerated -- for example, the baby on the plane suddenly stops crying when the camera pans over the passenger using an iPad -- but the ads convey a clear message about the iPad's versatility.

All but one of the ads focus on the sixth-generation iPad, which Apple introduced at its education event last March. The tablet is priced from $329 in the United States, serving as a lower-cost alternative to the iPad Pro, complete with Apple Pencil support.

Apple has yet to upload these ads to its main YouTube channel in the United States, but they are available on some of its regional channels.

Gimmie a decent mbp that is worth my money. I make music, record bands, produce and sound engineer. The iPad doesn't cut it for me.

Not saying the built in media app situation shouldn't be fixed, but why must you use the built in video player for your youtube movies? Why not use another app that doesn't require iTunes for content to be added or downloaded?

I wopuld be happy if Appel would offer a simple I7 (NOT XEON) based Desktop computer

People in these comments are really ****ing butthurt over these ads. In all of these cases an iPad could be better than a laptop. A laptop is best for some things, an iPad is best for others. I don’t pull out my MacBook Pro on a flight when I can take out my 12.9" iPad instead, the iPad is vastly superior in that situation.

People act like you can only own one of these ****ing devices, own one or both or none. It doesn’t take away from what each device does better.
At least with the iPhone, you can make a good argument that Apple should advertise it more than both the Mac and iPad, due to the larger potential customer base. And to an extent I agree.

But both the iPad and Mac bring in close to the same amount of revenue, which I was actually shocked to see given how much more advertising is bought for the iPad, even marketing it as a "laptop replacement".

It seems like Apple wants the iPad to eat into the Mac's market share, which is only another blow for those of us sticking to the Mac platform for various reasons, and witnessing its continued neglect.

iPad with iOS in the current form will NEVER become laptop replacement .. at least not for 95+% of users which rely not only on email, web browsing etc.

I have been using a base iPad (with keyboard case and an inexpensive third party pen) for a while now and it works just fine as a laptop replacement. I think my needs are pretty typical; email, messages, calendar, reminders, creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations, web research, notes, scanning documents, sketching, annotating PDFs, organizing Photos, watching videos, etc..

I suspect that well over 80% of the typical consumers could function effectively with an iPad only. For those with greater requirements and access to a shared desktop computer for occasional heavy lifting not appropriate for the iPad, then I think many of these folks would also be able to effectively get their computing tasks done. For example, most universities have desktop computer facilities in numerous buildings on campus that can be used by students. So, I could envision a student buying an iPad with keyboard case and pencil for their classroom and routine computing needs, and using the campus computers when the iPad was not sufficient......which might be on rare occasions. It will be interesting to see how use patterns evolve as the iPad becomes increasingly capable.

It’s like with my car. I need something fuel efficient and small for easy round town driving and parking. A few times each year, I take a load of stuff to the dump or have a project that requires a pickup. It would be crazy for me to buy a pickup and drive it all over town all year long when a small fuel efficient car is a much more practical and cost effective form of transportation for the vast majority of my driving needs.

Sure the iPad doesn't need to be exactly like a PC or Mac, I didn't say that. But it needs the best feature of the PC and Mac to be a worthwhile alternative.

Haha, good one!

Well it's the best selling tablet computer and sells more today than Mac's. I'd consider that a serious contender, unless you feel Mac's aren't a contender in the computer space?

That's fair, but it has "fully" replaced a laptop for some people.

While we get pedantic in details, it still hasn't fully replaced a laptop for all people, and it won't for some time until cerebral gadgets become more livid. Like someone said previously, it works well for most people, but not all. Hence why it cannot fully replace a laptop, i.e. Apple stops selling laptops.

I don't know why when anyone mentions that the iPad needs mouse/trackpad support, the iOS/iPad fanboys immediately start hollering, "Oh noes, the iPad is not a PC, it doesn't need mouse/trackpad support..."

They say the iPad doesn't need mouse/trackpad support, but do not mention any worthwhile reason why they wouldn't want the most superior form of input in existence on their devices.

Just thinking about using a touch screen to create, edit, and alter documents on Word, Excel, and Powerpoint makes my head hurt.

Options are good people. Your precious iPads will still be iPads with mouse/trackpad support, but only better.

The funny part is that people do not understand that the "Pencil "is embraced as a DESIGN TOOL not as a pointing device, and had you tried using the stylus ehmm pardon pencil as a pointing device on the iPad you'd understand why it sucks at such job.

The Pencil is an awesome tool for the right "Jobs" ;)

P.S. Jobs was NEVER ever against design tools and the iPad is definetly NOT a large PDA :D
Everyone knows what Steve Jobs meant with that stylus comment. Everyone knows Apple Pencil is for drawing/writing, not a pointing device. People who make these comments are being willfully obtuse.

I don't know why people keep dancing around this with weird wording. Yes, it can fully replace a laptop for some people. For others, it can't. I don't think anyone here is saying that an iPad can replace a laptop for all people. For most operational tasks, a traditional PC is a better tool.

Sooo... I guess this is Apple's solution for being totally incompetent at keeping up a decent Laptop/Desktop PC line of products.

My guess is that his is going to be their (near) future reason to abandon laptops and desktop PC's totally. Everyone they care about will use their iPad's as laptop replacements, and anyone who thinks they need a 'real' PC can go elsewhere.

I predict we will see an iOS SDK and iOS simulator from Apple very soon for non-Mac platforms. Once that is done, then there is zero reason to keep supporting MacOS.

To say an iPad is a notebook replacement is like saying a bicycle is a car replacement. Something can only replace another if it can do ALL the things, not just some & certainly not in a clunky way either. iPads & for that matter all iOS devices can't run a proper web browser for f### sakes, can bulk delete emails, can do a lot of simple things simply.

Nobody had ever had to go from their macbook to an iOS device to finish a task that couldn't be finished on the macbook. The reverse situation happens 24/7, laptop replacement my a$$.

While everyone has their own one-person reason why a MBP or iPad is better for everyone, studies of organizational productivity show that the number one factor to increase productivity is additional screen space. MSFT Surface has a very elegant solution for using a second monitor. Apple may support this in the future with iPads (not the current mirroring). But if a second monitor is part of Apple's "what's a computer" shade-throw, then perhaps not. Feel free to flame me with your own personal reasons why an iPad and its single screen alone is great for everyone.

How do you get local media onto an iOS without desktop iTunes? What app allows you to download MP4 files directly to your iOS device?

Not everyone needs to work on office documents. My primary concern is that mouse / cursor support for the iPad would cause developers to optimise their tablet apps for keyboard and mouse input rather than direct touch. Which would serve to make the overall tablet experience worse.

I mean - I look at the way I use my iPad, and majority of the time, a mouse simply isn’t feasible, because I am not at a desk. I could be lounging on a sofa, or walking around my classroom, or even out in the field. Either way, a mouse represents dead weight for me, while potentially posing a risk to the whole tablet ecosystem Apple has painstakingly built up.

So choose between mouse support or touchscreen support, because you can’t have both. Maybe I am being paranoid here, but mouse support is a Pandora’s box I would rather not open.

Well, in the near future, the iPad could end up being Apple’s reason for abandoning the entry level Macs (I.e. MaBook Air and Mac Mini). From their viewpoint, if your computing needs are simple, then buy an iPad.

I am not saying I fully agree with this logic......just saying this seems to be Apple’s direction.
