HDR photos

Can't wait to see what HDR photos on iPad means in practice. Steve mentioned it on his keynote around 15:45.

It must mean an iPad with a camera.

Yes. I just watched the keynote again, just to be sure it wasn't a mistake.

I think you are taking what he is saying out of context. If you actually listen to what he said, he was referring to the fact that 4.2 (as an iOS update, not the iPad specifically) would gain everything that 4.1 is (which he just showed off).

The mention of HDR photos is because it was a bullet point of 4.1, so he was repeating the same features for 4.2, and since 4.2 isn't exclusive to the iPad, those features will also be on the iPhone.

It's extremely obvious the context based on how he said it. There is no camera on the iPad, and there won't be until the next iPad comes out. Even if the next iPad comes out with a camera, it will be a front-facing one designed for FaceTime only. I doubt there will even be a camera app for taking pictures, because it will be a dinky little front facing camera and not the kind for taking HDR photos.

Stop making up stuff that simply isn't true.

HDR photos on iPad just doesn't make any sense without rear facing camera. I'm sure new iPad model(s) will be introduced in november simultaneusly with iOS 4.2.

Why would he have mentioned an OS feature that could't be used anyway?

It is possible that Steve misspoke. He did call the iPod touch an iPhone by accident during the keynote.

He was just listing features of the unifying operating system for iOS devices.

I assure you, and I am 100% sure, there will absolutely not come a new iPad in 2010. This would be so completely un-Apple and even stupid by Apple, I can't even believe some people here still hope to see a new one before 2011.

Airplay and facetime are both being published as open standards and apple have stated intention to get as many people using them as possible in as many devices as possible. Bonjour is freely available for mac and windows. Printer drivers will probably be GIMP based (more open source)...

CUPS, but yes.

CUPS is an interesting point, because it was an existing open source project and Apple went out and brought the project and the key developer on board.

Yes, yes, yes a thousand times yes. Apple - why not make the iPad an AirPlay destination like the AppleTV and Airport Express are? I do NOT want to sync movies to my iPad, I want to stream them like I do with my AppleTV.

This is pretty cool stuff, though it requires setting up the server. I've been using it for a bit, and it works well on my iPad and iPod touch.

I'm not absolutely sure on this one, but I think AirPlay will do streaming to your iPad/iOS-device, too.

No. I have those same 4 IMAP accounts on my iPhone for more than 2 years.

It doesn't Effin work!!!

I cannot create ANY POP3 account on the iPad. The only way I can get email to work properly is by synching my email account info from iTunes. And I've triple checked that all the settings are the same as in Mail on OS X. Ok, so I'll just do the same with the wife's account right? Nope. "The information on the iPad ... is synched with another user account. Do you want to synch this iPad with the information from this user account instead?"

Bloody POS! About ready to toss it through the window.

Since HDR is really just a processing effect, I think that this is not a feature that actually requires a camera...They probably will add it so that you can edit photos you have taken from another source.

Alot of camera's have the option to shoot "brackets" which you can then turn in to HDR images but they don't normally have the code on board to do the work so you end up using 3 times the space. So even if the iPad with camera dock lets you download the photos run HDR engine over the shots you have then pick between HDR and normal for the best shot you can then at least free up a third of space.

Funny how HDR will be on the iPhone this week but still requires a third party tool on a Mac hopefully iPhoto is getting an update fro both Mac and iPad.

Yeah, Apple would never update such a new product so soon after introduction...

..except that it is exactly what they did with iPod Touch and iPhone when they were first introduced.

What's so un-Apple about improving a good product?

First, your "facts" are plain wrong:
The second generation iPhone (3G) was introduced 1 year after the classic/2G (actually the time between introduction was even longer, if you count the first generations introduction in january and availability in june!!!). iPhones are on a 1 year schedule since the classic.

All iPod Touches have so far been available in September (introduced a few days earlier). Including the first and second generation:
1st generation: September 13, 2007
2nd generation: September 9, 2008
3rd generation: September 9, 2009
4th generation: September 8, 2010

Apple won't introduce an update to a mayor productline in the midst of the shopping season. That would lead to many upset customers bringing back their "old" iPad, that has just been bought as a present.

Apple can barely keep up demand with the current generation. Why for gods sake would they introduce another one with shortages, while the current generation sells like hot cakes.

Apples product cycle on almost all productlines is exactly one year (computers slightly less, software more).

So, if you want to hope for a new iPad this year, nobody stops you. I would bet big $$$ against this.

Damn me for believing Buyer's Guide.
Still, that doesn't stop me from believing :D

I'm buying my iPad in november or december and I hope there is a refresh before that.

Well, what Buyers Guide is listing there as an update is the same hardware with a little more storage. I wouldn't consider that an important update. It's the same hardware. No speedbumps, no new features.
But people here are specifically asking for a myriad of new features in the iPad. Most are not asking for a storage-bump.

But if I can help you with that: Both won't happen before 2011 ;)

To be honest. I love my iPad and wouldn't want to live without one. But I wouldn't buy one as late as december, knowing there's a new one around in spring.

The iPhone and iPod touch get it so the ipad will become more big iPod touch like. Should keep some features different like the phone on the iPhone then printing on the ipad

That is ridiculous. They should all print if they have WI-FI.

will they get ichat, in my opinon they need ichat and also will they get a camera or will that be in 2011?

Hey guys,

do you think that by november Apple will reveal some little new features exclusive for iPad that will be in iOS 4.2?

Before the announcement of the iOS upgrade for iPad, everyone supposed that it was taking so long to be released because it would have had some exclusive key features to distinct the iPad from the iPhone and the iPod touch, or at least a way to multitask adapted for that big screen.

But now we know that iOS 4 for iPad will be simply a giant copy of the iPhone and iPod touch iOS.

So.. why the hell it took so long?!

Please tell me your ideas, because I'm eager to read a logical motivation.

Very easy:
The saying goes, the iOS 4.0 Team didn't know about the top secret iPad-project till it's official unveiling. iOS 3.2 is a branch of an earlier iPhone OS and was developed separately.

It just needs time to bring both at some point over a year ago separated systems back together.

Sounds right to me. :)

What Markus said, plus they knew they needed to get printing at some point. The iPad still needs to be able to dock with something other than a computer (some MobleMe / Drop Box kind of thing). If there wasn't some reason, whether if ever becomes apparent to us, they would have released an update by now. Patience.

Most parts of the OS are the same with the iPhone version, but still there is a big differentiation. All Apple iPad apps are specifically designed for the larger screen estate, so yes, the codebase is the same but the apps are different (presentation layer). Printing is also coming and I don't see we will see it on the iPhone anytime soon. I am also sure that with time Apple will put even more features to iOS for the iPad.
As for the delay I believe that it is just a matter of resources and priorities set by Apple. Don't forget that iOS 3.2 has still things that the iPhone OS didn't have and came with iOS 4.0.
