I'm a photographer and hoped to use the IPAD for travel. I take between 400-800 images a day and would easily welcome a USB port accessed file unload. Right now the only way is through POGOPLUG through the internet or jail breaking the IPAD, neither of which sounds like a useful idea.

I will wait for the release of other tablets to see which one best meets my requirements. Since all I have are Macs, clearly an Apple solution would be my choice, but for loading, viewing and storing I really want external storage through USB.

I'm a photographer too, and that's why I have the Camera Connection Kit. It's a great replacement for those Epson Image tanks from before. Having said that, I wouldn't dump all my 800 photos in a shoot direct to my iPad. 64GB ain't a lot for my shoots, since i usually shoot Raw. Cheaper to buy more memory cards. Maybe I'll put in a few for viewing in the iPad but that's it.

But that's me. Either way, get the camera connection kit, it's a must have for iPad toting photographers.

I do agree there is more potential - there is always more a device at it's inception can do - that's why the world of consumer electronics is so exciting.

But you can't deliver everything on day one, even if the technology is in place to deliver it - that makes no economic sense, it pushes up price points and all-in-one devices are notoriously cr*p, a good showman always leaves you wanting more...

You have to begin somewhere and the sensible thing to do is have a specific target audience, focus on their needs and deliver a device with clear purpose.

That is what apple have always done.

That is why this device is so successful.

More will come, but in time through a mixture of new hardware and new software. Just because you 'can' do something, doesn't mean you should...

The iPad has already exceeded everyone's expectations in terms of functionality and sales. We can all see the future potential, we all have a wish list of things we'd like to be able to do with it....

...but those criticising this device for not being all things to all users and saying that Apple have created something flawed are, frankly, talking *********.

Pretty good reply. :)

if you stream via netflix it will remember where you left off. doesn't matter if you watched it on an internet enabled TV, idevice, x-box, playstation, etc

The new apple tv doesn't do this then? Didn't read that...

Normally, I'd agree, but I've noticed a pattern with Apple iOS releases usually followed by a revised hardware release which makes me think iPad 2.0 will be available sooner rather than later.

Especially after all the complaints Apple will get about 4.0.2 making their iPads really slow ;)

Although I agree with you, Apple does tend to announce hardware around the same time, I think it would be crazy for Apple to announce new hardware directly before Christmas and in the middle of Christmas shopping season. I'm not sure they have ever done that. They would be dealing with so many returns it would be ridiculous.

lately it seems that apple is more on developing an idevice for every niche, with minimal features and letting them rot. it shouldn't take that long to bring an update to the ipad.

apple needs to stop hoarding cash and hire some developers

it looks like apple is losing focus. last year they hyped the digital LP and now it's left to rot. nice idea that could have been developed some more to work on idevices. Slacker and Pandora already do this.

appleTV could have been so much more

apple can't seem to keep their computers updated with current tech on a timely basis

releasing the iPad early was a good strategy but these things need updates and Android is looking to be a steamroller

so no expose or multitasking with multiple windows open AT THE SAME TIME.

what a waste of screen space. fools. I don’t know about you, but having an IM conversation open to the side of another app open, like safari, would be cool, or to watch a movie while playing words with friends. a quick dart of the eye to the left or right is so much more efficient closed one app and loading another.

Apple sell a product called the macbook - you might like to look at that as a device that does what yr after, it's not what the iPad does, so it's probably not for you?

Printing only to WiFi printers?

I'm hoping they don't mean it can only print to wireless printers. I have a wired network printer and I'm hoping it will print to that.

That would be cool, but would probably drain the battery faster. Hmm...

Why did you type every word in full except for "yr" lol

*sigh* Still no To Do Items with MobileMe sync, then? Jesus Christ, Apple, I can't be the only person who wants this. How much longer do I have to wait???

Agreed - I am need my Todo's and iCal to sync together... simple solution... badges obviously for items that are due or coming up due (customizable) and just swipe your calendar to side when your in the app to get to your todo list :) I am emailing Jobs as we speak....

the touch update got me excited! hopefully all those upgrades come to the ipad! retina/front cam/back cam. be nice to see 100GB+ storage too. as an artist i'd like to see native support for pressure sensitive pens. but i saw someone already developed an app thing that can be used by developers to put that in their drawing apps to use a pressure sensitive pen. with the retina display the ipad will be great for sketching.

Will Airplay work the other way? Can iTunes stream music or videos to an ipad?

I've always wondered why u couldn't stream your iTunes library music to your idevice.

So about that streaming, will I be able to stream my itunes library to my iPod Touch?

Does this also allow me to stream audio/video/photo's from my iMac to my iPad? I'm not interested in streaming stuff from my ipad to my tv.

Yes, yes, yes a thousand times yes. Apple - why not make the iPad an AirPlay destination like the AppleTV and Airport Express are? I do NOT want to sync movies to my iPad, I want to stream them like I do with my AppleTV.

I'm starting to see ownership of these devices as "household" rather than personal. It makes more sense to share these. I doubt everyone is going to carry both each day. Perhaps everyone would want an ipod and one ipad for the family.

Pages

what about folder in Pages? I want to save all my pages files and manage them with folders.

The iPhone and iPod touch get it so the ipad will become more big iPod touch like. Should keep some features different like the phone on the iPhone then printing on the ipad

Why should they keep some features different? I think all iPhone & iPod Touch owners would very much like to have all the iPad features, and the iPad owners would like to have the iPod Touch & iPhone features. Only reason to keep differences is to get consumers to buy more product and put more money in Apple's pockets.

I really hope 4.2 brings parity between the devices as far as OS-features go (clearly no camera on iPad means no FaceTime).

Apple Details Features in iOS 4.2 for iPad

With a finite number of resources to code, printing was probably not their number 1 priority. Why is it so hard for people to understand this concept. I'm sick and tired of hearing people complaint that Apple product A doesn't have XYZ features. Give it time people.

1) I wasn't complaining, I was making an observation. 2) I usually wait for 2nd gen products to come out for exactly the reason you quote. It takes time for products to develop. A 2nd generation will likely include many features which currently exist on the new iPod touch line. :)

Everything I've read says it can't be done.....maybe the last update fixed it?

Essentially you have two people both using the same POP3 server - server.company.domain - because both point to the same server address it doesn't know which one to use
No. I have those same 4 IMAP accounts on my iPhone for more than 2 years.

Can't Wait For iPad G2!!!

The iPad is shaping up real nice and is gonna really be THE product for Apple for quite some time. Can't wait for G2 iPad....CC is ready!!!

That Apple TV for $99 is also gonna be a big hit. I was so bummed about the castration of the iPod Nano into Shuffle+ (EPIC FAIL!!!) that I totally missed the Apple TV. After looking at what it can do....this thing is a slam dunk. No more watching my iTunes movies on my laptop display.

last year they hyped the digital LP and now it's left to rot.

Actually, the digital LP (iTunes LP) was not something Apple wanted to do. The record companies were complaining that sales of "whole albums" was down and they would like to see it increased. I believe during the negotiations for DRM-free iTunes, the record company required that Apple provide a means to promote the whole album.

The iTunes LP thing was their fulfillment of that contractual obligation. But they left it up to the record companies to provide the content for it since they were the ones who wanted it so badly. The record companies have failed to take advantage of it.

wasn't apple the one doing the art and coding for the LP's?

as for Ping it seems that the only artists on there are those with a big relationship with LiveNation. it's like LiveNation wanted this and this is just a contractual obligation

We still really need access to saved documents to make the iPad a real business option.

You're not aware of this, but you sound like an old fuddy-duddy, set in his ways.

When I started in the business world in the early 1980's, there was a big group of people who were the same as you. Only they didn't resist moving to a non-file system like you are, they resisted the move to desktop computer and even to using a keyboard. They couldn't conceive how anyone would want to use computers, or how they could help someone get a job done. You're the same way.

You are the past.
