"universal interface for retrieval of information in a computer system." is PATENTED?!

This is from The Onion..... right?

Uh, did you actually read the whole patent describing APPLE'S OWN SPECIFIC IMPLEMENTATION of it? Or did you just read the short little blurb from macrumors describing what the patent is about?

I don't think you understand how the patent system works. You can have a million different patents from a million different companies about the exact same thing as long as they describe different implementations or methods to solve the problem they are trying to solve.

For example, there are are a bunch of patents for "an apparatus to control a moving vehicle" but these steering wheel patents describe entirely different ways to attach to and operate the steering system in cars.

Most people don't know or understand this fact about the patent system which makes them look clueless when posting about it.

Change the channel. It isn't Apple broadcasting these things, it is web sites like MacRumors. So if you are tired of hearing about this stuff, don't blame the subject of the news - blame the news provider or change the channel.

Of course Larry Page would say that - his company ripped off a bunch of Apple patents and technology. But we don't want to discuss, that, right? We just want to move on. Uh-huh. Also, sorry that you found iOS 6 boring - personally I don't look to my mobile operating system to add interest to my life.

How is Google pushing the envelope, with their ridiculous "google glass" piece of crapware? Or do you mean the self-driving car that is just a pipe dream for the foreseeable future? Or their streaming music service which is just a rehash of what others are already providing, bringing nothing new to the table? Is that what you mean?

Do you actually believe the tripe you are spouting or do you get paid to try and say stupidity.

I'm not going to sit here and tell you that you have a functional use for anything that is being designed or innovated.

But the fact that there are companies out there (apple is included), that constantly strive to come up with new, Innovative, distinct and exciting technologies, is a good thing. Always a good thing

it might seem gimmmicky. it might fail, it might not. it might turn out to be the most worthless boring technological advance in the historiy of history. But it's still an advance, And its still someone trying.

some of the greatest minds in history have all said the same things... one does not succeed by not trying.

Even when technology fails, the invention of it tends to go towards the betterment of everyone. To be closed minded enough to say that because some invention doesn't interest you, doesn't mean it's "ridiculous" or a "Pipe dream".

some of the most awesome things we have today in our world are the result of Dreams.

handheld communication devices? Go tell Star trek that thier communicators were a pipe dream and they shouldn't have even bothered to dream it up cause it'll never exist.

A self driving car might be 2000 years away, but it might be 2. You never know till you start and if it starts now and leads to that, even better.

If Apple could at least step up their game with their new generation iPhones, the competition and endless copying from Samsung/HTC/Sony/whatever would not even matter, as they would remain the undisputed market leaders, just as they were at the respective times of the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4 - as nothing else at the time could really match the iOS experience.

In my opinion - the Apple of today is entirely different from the Apple I knew a few years ago. Competition is what drives the industry, a few years ago Apple were fully aware of that particular fact, and their entire business model rested on providing products, revolutionizing at heart, to completely redefine the user-experiences. The impressive part of Apple used to be the fact that no matter how hard competitors tried, as soon as they were approaching Apple - Apple took the industry, once again, to the next level. I may be exaggerating a bit, but this is how I remember it. Of course, Apple were perhaps not the first implementing new products, however Apple were the first to understand how these new products should be operating in order to provide the absolute best user experience for the consumer. The best example is of course the iPod. The iPod was not the first mp3 player. However, Apple were the first to understand exactly what type of features the user wanted. They were the first to understand how to provide these features in a nice looking, top-quality device, and how to market/price the product.

As of today, many consumers (I'm not saying that I do, but many others do) ask for larger phones, OS-widgets, improved notifications, NFC, or other new features, but Apple is fully asleep on their throne, while consumers who have waited far too long have started to look elsewhere. The Apple I knew were a company who provided these new features LONG BEFORE we even now we needed them, or before we even knew they were possible to implement.

Back in 2007 - None of us expected, or needed the features of the iPhone before it was introduced - the same goes for the iPod, the iPad (at least that's the general opinion, I don't need an iPad), the ability to download Apps, the ability to purchase songs online, LED-laptop screens (I remember my first MBP in 2007 with the LED-screen...), the MacBook Air, etc. et.c. However, today - Apple knows exactly what the consumers are asking for, but fail to provide it after so many years of wishful thinking. That said, the new Android phones have never looked more interesting than they do today, and I can honestly see why people switch. This has led to the increased sales of the competitors (especially the Galaxy-series) causing Apple to freak out - these lawsuits are clearly the result of Apple's concern. Considering the 10 million units sold of the GS4 during its first month, it's not exactly a surprise I suppose (even though I don't really get the appeal of the GS4).

That said Apple, get a grip of yourselves - stop these lawsuits and get back to what you do best - innovate and revolutionize!

Being a true Apple fan, it hurts me to say this - but the new HTC One is everything that the new iPhone should have been, and if Apple does not surprise me at WWDC, I'm going to give it a try real soon.

If you can't innovate, you litigate. Apple motto #1 these days, sadly.

If iOS 7 isn't a major refresh, Apple is heading to serious trouble. While they technically won the last lawsuit with Samsung, it was a pyrrhic victory. By suing them, they heaped more public awareness and interest towards Samsung, which has now become the Android dominant manufacturer.

Sue them again, and the result will be even worse. Even if Apple wins.

The only way to truly win is to innovate.

As a long time Apple supporter, I really hate that Apple is doing this and I am very quickly loosing all respect for the company leadership. To me it's corporate bullying and I hope it backfires on them.

Nice theory, but.....nope.

Who Apple should be suing is Google and their Chromebook Pixel and Chromebox. Everything from the box, advertising, packaging, even the device itself is so-apple it's a shame.

They look more like apple products than the GS4. Atleast the GS4 provides some good competition unlike Chromebook Pixel that is just shockingly bad and useless..

Samsung phones have enough features, infact the major complain about GS4 is that it has so many features that users are 'overwhelmed' by them. If I start listing them, you might easily get frustrated by lack of features on your iPhone.

Here's a quick example:

YouTube: video

I've seen those "features". What, you think you are showing us something we don't know?

Those "features" of yours are more like gimmicks. But hey, if you like useless gimmicks, enjoy your G4.

unlike Chromebook Pixel that is just shockingly bad and useless..

For your use case.

And I would argue that it's "bad" - what's bad about it - almost every review I've seen (if not every) has talked about how GREAT the build quality and functions are. You can argue about the OS being useful or not. That's in the eye of the beholder. If you want to argue price - I agree - it's over priced.

Some are gimmicky - just like some of Apple's things are gimmicky. Some I see as very useful and valid.

But hey - you can have your opinion based on never having used one - or others can have their based on actually using one.

Well because if you are ahead of the game people will want your new stuff not the old ideas that someone just copied years later. So how many of you would like a Samsung Razr flip phone now? Its super thin and the battery will last a few days! nah Motorola would sue over it since they are such a hot item now.

Being ahead of the game is no longer as easy as it used to be. Companies `copy` each other even before they release the products. We hear rumors of some sort about one product or feature and before you know it, everybody has similar stuff.

If you take a risk and become successful, others that capitalize on your success without having to take that risk are some what seen as copiers. The return of the initial risk taken becomes minimal. This is also what these companies try to protect with patents and increase their return.

I'm not sure why this is news. Aren't most large corporations, especially those in the mobile industry, constantly entangled in legal battles?

Shut it apple !

Less litigate; go innovate !

It seems that there's something about attacking the competition that appeals to Apple. They used to enjoy innovating.

While they still do some innovating, it's only a sliver of their previous efforts. With Apples years of experience and well organized operation they could easily look forward, instead of worrying about Samsung, and create truly great new products.

Nice theory, but.....nope.

I think he's right though. The fact that Apple sued Samsung at the time when they were experiencing enormous market growth proved to me at least, a sense of concern.

If Apple only intended to protect the design/features of the iPhone, there were many other manufacturers for which to file lawsuits - namely the different chinese clone-producers et.c. However, Apple does not care about those clone-producers, never have, never will, as they will never threaten Apple's market position. The Samsung Galaxy has, on the other hand. Like it or not.

I honestly believe that the lawsuit of Samsung, at the time of their enormous growth - placed Samsung right in the golden spotlight. Many people who perhaps had not considered a Samsung phone probably realised that the Galaxy phones were strong contenders, while being a bit cheaper than the iPhones, yet providing more features, such as larger screens for example, which many people like.

It's almost the same thing. Suing Samsung is in essence suing Google. Why? Samsung makes up for 95% of Android. Without Samsung getting phones into the marketplace or having them embargoed, Android market share would start to sink.

Really? Samsung did not have to innovate...and look where they are now.

All they had to do is copy everything Apple did, then they paid some students to post false information, and bam, instant success. Nice.

But we both know that Apple is winning, don't we? Sure, Samsung is selling more units, but Apple is making more money.

Everyone needs to realize now that suing over patent infringement is less about protecting a company's hard earned intellectual property, and more about hurting the competition.

The courts are nothing more than yet another market battleground for corporations to fight on.

Last I heard - Samsung was doing pretty well financially.

This "winning" idea is ridiculous coming from consumers.

What are they doing? Going for the bank vault high score?

Apple is making more money, sure, but that doesn't directly equate to Samsung losing. While it isn't quite as much, they're still making money, and plenty of it. That's all that matters.

Apple, get your *********g useless fingers out your ass ... You can't even be bothered to bring out your own decent S4 competitor; choosing to spend more time in court.

Used to love Apple, hate them now!!!!

So why you keep coming on an Apple site ?

----------

Apple's new business strategy. Apply for vague patents and then sue everyone.

Now you can say they copied Google :D

Exactly.

But of course, I'm winning more because I get more hot pockets than you.

Last I heard - Samsung was doing pretty well financially.

But not as well as Apple. Now I don't really care about Apple's finances, but I do get a kick when I see Samsung fanboys get so upset when they see how well Apple is doing.:D

This "winning" idea is coming from Samsung fanboys. They can't stop themselves from posting, "hey look at the number, look at the numbers, hurrah for Samsung".

Really? Because the idea just came from you. Are you a Samsun fanboy? I'm going to guess not. You brought up the idea of winning.
