facial recognition was the worst thing apple ever did. they should had just focused on touch id under the display to begin with and then we would had a better auth system WITHOUT the stupid notch.

After collecting everyone's fingerprint and voice Apple needs face, health biometrics, finance, etc. to complete their database.

Optical under-display fingerprint sensors are not up to capacitive yet in terms of speed and accuracy, and I don't know whether the tech will be significantly improved over what's available today.

Better stick with capacitive on power button imo. It's fast, reliable, and less costly as well. It doesn't look as sexy (no opportunity to show off some cool animations on screen), but I still prefer it vs smudging bottom half of the screen all the time.

I thought I'd prefer Touch ID to Face ID. I have to say that now that I have a phone with Face ID. I found I prefer the tech. While it is convenient. What I like most is reliability. It's pretty rare it fails and I have to enter my password. When it does fail. It's because my face is too far away.

Touch ID frequently failed for me. So, I'd have to enter the pin. Making me choose a four digit pin. As I had to enter it so often. This was the case with iPhone (5s, 6s and SE) and Android (Pixel XL, Pixel 3). I even added my fingerprints multiple times. Just to cover all angles to improve accuracy. It helped some. But still frequently failed.

Another gripe with Touch ID is sweating. Damp hands don't work at all with Touch ID. Plus it would frequently get activated in pocket. So, when I take the phone out. It's locked and requires a pin.

If Apple wants to add it. That's great for those who prefer it. Just don't take away Face ID.

Moved from 6s to 12:
Heavier, bulkier, hard to operate in one hand (minus points for the annoying notch and the lack of 120Hz display too) but the worst downside is the lack of touch ID, apart from the mask issue, face ID is just not as good and not as fast, I find myself having to insert my passcode all the time.

it makes perfect sense given the pandemic, even if it was useless for you...
Pandemic is on the tail end and the tech won’t be here until probably everyone has been vaccinated and Covid is no longer a thing. Sure, there may be another pandemic but I don’t think you drive long term strategy because of current, temporary events.

What if the next pandemic requires wearing gloves?? By the time touchID might return, you’re probably not required to wear a mask everywhere anymore
this one kind of does too, in some countries for sure) i'm hoping it returns this fall, but it was my understanding that it wasn't meant to replace face id, rather have both. hope i'm not wrong

i think you are overly optimistic, but let's pray you're correct.

jeez, sorry to hear that. didn't realize that was even a thing!
It’s not a big deal in normal life at all, and for me quite frankly, punching in my 10 digit passcode when I need to while wearing a mask is a minor minor inconvenience in comparison... but everyone is different, and that is ok

TouchiID was useless for me and bringing it back in addition to faceid does not make sense due to cost ...
Can we for once just have value added to the product without us having to pay extra for it? Like...you know...the first 8 years or so of iPhone.

Replacing facid would be a really bad thing
They definitely have no intention of replacing Face ID at all.

This is in addition to, and as an alternative to.

I'm sure users will be able to pick which one they prefer, or even use both. Having both running at the same time would be great.

Hopefully it will also get rid of the horribly awful "DOUBLE CLICK THE SIDE BUTTON" nonsense that Face ID users are subject to. If they need some kind of 2-factor, let it be replaced by Face ID + Touch ID.

This is kind of why I hate reading this website. Just when I'm thinking of upgrading my iPhone or my Mac, there's something on the horizon that I know will make me kick myself for not waiting ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
