Let me summarize half the posts in this thread: I didn’t read the article but I love FaceID and anyone who has a different preference is stupid. I can’t see why people should be given a choice, they need to accept that I know what’s best for them.

LOL at the people literally complaining about having two options to securely unlock their device using biometrics. If you don't like touchID guess what, no one is forcing you to use it.

I'm among the minority in that I absolutely despise FaceID. I have to enter my passcode up to a dozen times every day because it will not recognize my face in various situations (not including mask use, since I work from home and rarely have one on). Maybe I just have a funkedafied face but all attempts to make FaceID consistently work, including many times resetting things, have failed.

The return of TouchID is the one thing that will get me to purchase a new phone.

Not sold on the idea I like facial recognition better.
Unless you have a mask on.
I'd like to have both, I too prefer FaceID but I find myself typing the pin countless times nowadays. A phone with FaceID and TouchID would be great. I don't need it to be under the display, the power button would do just fine.

Anyone who accepts optical readers as secure, shouldn't have an issue with Android face recognition, and shouldn't talk of how important security is to them. Fingerprint readers need to be of the ultrasonic kind, like what you see in Samsung's phones. These are the gold standard for security. What a joke for desperate Apple diehards for not calling out the use of an optical reader like the ones you find on cheap Chinese phones. 🙄

Mentioned it before, but one of the reasons I prefer TouchID over FaceID was because it was on a button you could feel it as you picked up the phone and could unlock it long before it ever needed to see your face (or choose not to). I'm curious to how Apple is going to address this or I can see a possible issue of it unlocking the phone when you really don't want it to. If like FaceID it still requires you to swipe up then that defeats why I like it better in the first place.

If (and when) TouchID makes a comeback, there obviously won’t be a physical button if its under-display. There will be an allocated area initially, to place your finger upon, thereby unlocking the device. In this case, I believe it to be highly unlikely that they will also require a swipe up motion. I believe it would be like a traditional TouchID function, where the device is unlocked and you are taken to the Home Screen in one action.

If they employ under-screen, it would be nice if they then work towards a full-screen finger placement array. Which, Apple being Apple, is likely.

I love FaceID, as I’ve said ever since the iPhone X was released. But I also loved TouchID. There are definite use cases and situations to justify having both. So I’d love to see it make a comeback.

They’ll have to do some backtracking after the whole emphasis of increased security with FaceID. But if ever there was a time that they could justify its return, without worrying about that situation, it’s now. They can handily bypass the security issue by emphasising the convenience factor while wearing face masks.

Under-screen, or within Power Button, I don’t mind (though I like under-screen just because of the technical aspects), it would just be nice to see the old fella return.

Lets hope Apple release Touch ID on all the iphone 13 models as a standard feature, then ill get the 13 Mini without fail.

Yes, god forbid there’s choice in this world. It should be outlawed, there’s one way and one way only to do things. Anyone with a (shudder to think) difference of opinion should be publicly flogged. In fact no, it’s a good kick in the arse they need.

It’s not a big deal in normal life at all, and for me quite frankly, punching in my 10 digit passcode when I need to while wearing a mask is a minor minor inconvenience in comparison... but everyone is different, and that is ok
totally. my wife's skin is more dry than mine and she constantly complains about it, but no touch id issues though!)

Replacing facid would be a really bad thing

FaceID is going nowhere, not with the billions they've invested in it, the big deal they made over increased security and the ongoing developments to further miniaturise the components.
If they're going to add TouchID it will be exactly that, an addition, not a replacement.

The only problem I have with adding TouchID is added cost, and you and I and everyone else will have to pay for that...

Will be convenient, but I'm hopeful that this country and world will be in a position where we won't need it.

Touch id is my buy or not buy feature, if it has it, I will purchase the next iphone, if not, i will wait
I have been using the iPhone X since it came out with passcode, patiently waiting for touch id comeback.

Still on the iPhone 8 here. Similarly, I will wait* for Touch ID before I buy another iPhone.

* Unless the 8 breaks and I replace it with an SE 2.

I know I am dreaming but, if they implement TouchID in display, I hope there is an iOS option to make a vritual HomeButton with it completely with a virtual bezel.

the current iphone screens are just too large for me to navigate one handed/thumb and adding this will diminish the size where my thumb has to reach the four corners of the screen.

As someone who has both devs for iOS and Android I have both the 12 mini (and every other iPhone, but that's my iOS daily driver now) along with the OnePlus 8 for Android... the 1+ has an under-screen fingerprint sensor... I was dubious when I first got it several months ago, but it's worked quite well and now that I have to wear a mask when leaving the house it's the phone I'm taking with me when going out in public... I'm guessing it's not the functional issue (as mentioned the 1+ does a great job... and I'm OCD about UX), but perhaps the level of security offered?

In today’s world both Face ID as well as Touch ID are necessary on an iPhone.
If someone prefers not to set Touch ID up so be it. But at least give everyone the choice
Entering a passcode is annoying because of wearing a mask. Touch ID would be easier
Hopefully Apple steps up their game and implements Touch ID in iPhone 13.
And for the people that don’t like Touch ID there still will be a passcode. So everybody will be happy
Just looked at patent which was submitted in 2019 and granted 2020. There’s a chance it will make it into iPhone 23

I had the X and face ID worked ok but I missed touch ID a lot. Then I got the 12 Pro Max, and face ID works a LOT better (especially with proper setup and using two faces). i dont care about Touch ID anymore. They really did improve it a lot in 3 generations.
