I would love it if it worked on the full display, and was on all the time. Use FaceID to unlock the device (as it's more secure than TouchID) and then use TouchID to authenticate every single touch on the screen. So that even if someone grabbed your unlocked phone from your hand, they would only be able to see what is on the screen at that time, but not be able to interact with it in any way.
Well this would be amazing. Devil's advocate: what about gloves and stylus?

Assuming iPhones will have both Face and Touch ID's, which would be nice, I wonder if the API will be expanded to allow Apps to tell which one is was the was used to unlock. FaceID is hard to break than TouchID (or at least it was, maybe that's where they've improved other than under glass).

Why bother with an optical reader. It's not even secure, and definitely not secure enough for mobile payments. Where are all the users bashing optical readers for lack of security on Android devices? Lol

Anyone who accepts optical readers as secure, shouldn't have an issue with Android face recognition, and shouldn't talk of how important security is to them. Fingerprint readers need to be of the ultrasonic kind, like what you see in Samsung's phones. These are the gold standard for security. What a joke for desperate Apple diehards for not calling out the use of an optical reader like the ones you find on cheap Chinese phones. 🙄
Since they are using multiple sources of off-axis angular light, they should be able to do depth mapping to verify that it is not a flat image of a fingerprint. That is the main benefit to ultrasonic scanners. Even if this is just to improve the image (and maybe sensor area) that is a big improvement over those “cheap Chinese phones” you mentioned.

Odd illustration. Is that really a FINGER on the display? Doesn’t really look like one but it does seem familiar. Not sure why. 😏

back when the 7 came out with it's haptic touch home button, i remember hearing whispers of the device becoming all screen with a virtual home button that worked & felt like a real one.... this seems like the missing piece, and haptic touch is still there. hope apple has kept that vision in mind!

I’m curious where Apple will go here. Is it going to be optional where you can choose to use Face ID or Touch ID? That seems un-Apple like. Normally Apple decides what they think the best solution is and implements it. Or are they going to pitch it as another layer of security where you’d use both?
I hope that Apple will have two toggle options. The first toggle would allow for either to be used. The second toggle would allow the user to set Face ID or Touch ID.

I went from an iPhone 7 Plus to an iPhone X when it came out, and then for the first time in my life I returned a new iPhone back and went back to using my 7 Plus. I did not like Face ID (or the narrower screen, or the notch) and I've been waiting for something better for years now. I hope this is coming this year because I'm ready for a new iPhone. Luckily I still like my 7 Plus.

I would wait to see what Apple releases before talking. Facial recognition was poor an no secure until Apple implemented Face ID. Ultrasonic sensors work bad with tempered glass screen protectors, for example. So wait and see what they release before talking too much.

I’d be happy if apple just dropped faceid. Living with it since the x it is just a pain in the ass unless you have the phone straight in front of your face. It’s a step back from touch id in basically every way for me. Get rid of the notch, bring back Touch ID so we can use our phones again and increase screen size. Faceid is the worst way to unlock a phone if you’re lounging around and don’t have your phone close to you or in your hand. On a counter? Good luck leaning over the counter to maybe work. Face Masks, forget about it.
if you have to disable faceid to even enjoy using the phone its a design flaw.

Most modern Android under-screen readers are pretty accurate. Never had issues with one except for older Samsung ones.
That's good to know, but the real test is not how often it rejects you, but how often it authenticates people who are NOT you, bit harder to find out.
